Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Before Microsoft and Sony do something regarding their future in the video game business, I wanted to write, and I've wanted it for a long time now, but other things kept getting in my way, and fearing that tomorrow might be too late, today will have to do.   Months ago,...

DAILY MANIFESTO

inFAMOUS 2 Will Never End

Posted on Wednesday, March 2 @ 17:29:12 Eastern by

Josh provided an excellent lead-in for what I'm about to say... by pretty much saying it already.

Yes, it's true, while not explicitly called LittleBigInfamous, inFAMOUS 2 will allow you to craft your own levels using the assets built right into the main game. Yesterday, Sucker Punch devs took the stage in the PlayStation Lounge across the street from GDC to reveal a secret they've held for two years. I guess we journalists have failed you dear readers. We're just not asking the right questions.

You'll have to forgive us though. I don't think anyone would have put money on user-created levels a week ago, but here we are talking about how you'll jump into Forge... I mean, the developer's shoes to create your own custom missions in inFAMOUS 2's open world. The tool set might as well have been written in Latin. There were way too many items to choose from and logic strings to determine, but it seems like with a little time and practice, you'll quickly pick up the mission-crafting tools.

While I didn't get to build a level, I did get to try some quick hits, including a platforming-inspired ring race, a shooting gallery, and a more traditional mission you might expect in the main game. These missions served as good introductions, but will presumably be nothing compared the missions users will create in the upcoming beta.

It's true, you may want to be on the look out for Sucker Punch's application site, or possibly reup your PlayStation Plus subscription. A beta for the creation tools will be released before the game's June release in order to fully squash all the bugs. The best user-created missions will remain on the servers after the beta's close and be featured during inFAMOUS 2's retail launch.

Sucker Punch also assured us that these user-generated missions will populate the world map while you're playing the main game. That means you'll be able to set custom filters to play the best and brightest, even sifting out Sucker Punch's favorite maps. Of course, you'll be able to see the latest and freshest missions as well and be on the inside track before the masses pick up the latest mission.

Check out the trailer for the user-generated mission features below:

Thats pretty wicked and all, but I just had a thought... WIth LittleBigInfamous coming out, along with LBP2, and the development packages for the Kinext & Move coming out... couldn't you maybe, kinda, possibly see this being a gateway for professional developers to become lazier, knowing how many hardcore gamers are going to make their own stuff? It probably won't happen, I'm just saying... The reason we go out and spend $60+ on a game, at least why I do, is to buy a professional product that professional developers have made, I don't wanna give them my money to make my own game.

Obviously, what I've suggested is over-exagerated, and probably not gonna happen, but still, food for thought.

    Excellent remark, and indeed frightening.
