KontrolFreek Rcade Freek Mini-Review

GR regularly receives questionable doodads and thingamabobs, a frightening portion of which are attachment accessories for console controllers. The KontrolFreek's Rcade Freek is one such controller mod, and as always, I was skeptical to the purpose of simple extension to the analog nubs on the Xbox 360 or PS3 controller. So color me surprised to find that they are more than just black plastic rods with shiny domes on their tips (if they were triple the size, you would be reading this review on XXXRevolution.com).

As implied in the title, the Rcade Freek is meant to bring back the days when the joystick was king, and nothing carries that message more than using the accessory on the Xbox 360 controller for PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX. By holding the stick as you would a lollipop joystick in the arcade or just pinching it between your thumb and index finger, the amount of control is increased enough that I found escaping from waking ghosts a bit easier. The added inch of height provides more room for your hand to move around for extra precision (ohhh.... yeah).

Kontrol Freek also recommends using the Rcade Freek for Super Street Fighter IV, and it helps somewhat, but it's obvious that the standard, albeit much more expensive, Madcatz arcade joystick does the job much better. A part of this is because the analog nubs themselves don't have a square gate that you might find in the arcade. Still, for the meager price of $10, it's an adequate solution to the $30 Madcatz SFIV FightPad and a competent add-on for fans who love arcade-styled downloadable titles and bullet-hell shmups.
