Losing $15,000 On An MMO?

Posted on Wednesday, October 13 @ 19:01:10 Eastern by danielrbischoff

Only available in EVE Online, of course. Is this battle worth that much money? I'm sure there are more man-hours than real dollars at stake here.

The story goes that in an area of EVE Online called TN-T7T, OMFGCORP launched an attack on  Ev0ke's capital ship production facilities. The attacking force consisted of 250 Capital Ships, 500 Sub Capital Ships, and 5 Titans. Ev0ke decided to take their fleet out of battle in order to cut their losses.

Cut their losses? In game items worth $15,000 in EVE Online's Isk currency isn't a big enough loss? Someone please tune me into what the fuck is going on here.

Honestly, if MMOs were more like this, I'm sure I'd be a lot more likely to play along. Of course, I could join EVE, but I think I'm a little too late to do anything of worth.

Wasn't this story posted a long time ago? The video is just in montage form now. Maybe it was in the forums...or maybe it wasn't even GR. But yeah, old news to me.

I know there have been previous reports out of EVE Online of in-game currency that's worth actual money being stolen, destroyed, etc

Not being able to contribute as new players is quite a myth. As just one example new players can easily fill the tackler roll (Frigate that speeds into larger slower ships and warp scrambles them)with very little skill training. A basic tackling frigate is extremely cheap and very important to large and small fleets alike. Also a great way to "learn the ropes".

You really can do anything you want in EVE. The problem is people always expect to be told what to do, or not do, instead of taking initiative and just doing it!

The video that was posted before was in that "Top Gaming Videos" post, it had some giant ass ship worth a few million in-game bucks that was blown up by a bunch of other people... I dont get this game at all... I'm a big nerd, grew up on Star Trek and Star Wars, but this game looks so supremely f*cking boring to me, I can't fathom how people spend so much time on it. I mean, you're not even doing sh*t, just commanding your little black speck on the screen to attack something giant with all the other black specks on the screen... what the ****?

The camera was zoomed out, MrrClean, to show you the scope of the battle. Maybe you should play the trail version to see what the game is really like. I tried it and thought it was alright, just not the type of game for me. I'm more of a FreeSpace/Wing Commander type of guy.

Don't bother trying fathom what people are willing to play. I don't get why people pay to play Minecraft but hey some people paint.
