Mainstream Media Ignoring SOPA

Posted on Wednesday, January 18 @ 14:18:02 Eastern by

Media Matters for America released the above graph of how often MSNBC, Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN devoted their precious time to cover SOPA between October 26, 2011 through January 22, 2012. You know, SOPA. That bill which will destroy the Internet. That thing that is obviously not as important as the Kardashian divorce and the British Royal Family's yacht. Oh my, scandalous. That's what the people need to be informed about...

So either mainstream media is extremely slow to pick up on things (definitely possible), they're being paid not to cover it or to cover it once and then slip it under the radar (also possible), or they've been waiting for something big to happen like today's SOPA Blackout on the internet to give a hoot about it (probably).

But Kate Middleton refused to eat "peanut paste"! Does that mean there's a baby on the way? OMG! Who cares about that SOUP thing, anyway?

How about big media realizes that the reason they are less relevant is not because of piracy but because their content is crap?

Funny how America is more concerned with the British Royal Family than American stuff. Looks like we have our priorities straight.

Media today is just entertainment. Why else would people be so hung up over the hottest Hollywood divorces or go up in arms when a football player does something out of the ordinary?

I call bullshit on these stats. Coverage of Kim Kardashian's ass would trump any of these bar graphs. Although, I think a pie chart would be more suitable for that.

I would like to point out I have seen MSNBC and CNN talk about SOPA all day today. And all day yesterday, and the day before. Just saying its a bit more than most of those stats.

Yep, they're only showing interest now because of the Blackout day. If these huge companies didn't participate, the media would have let SOPA slip under the radar.

In case he doesn't see this, I'll answer for him. He is a man of international mystery, and no origin. Except Pennsylvania. He just lives in Japan.

"A man of international mistery" sounds like the profile of someone who's wanted by Interpol.

I think they just know their audience and realize that people who care/know about the internets don't watch TV news. Their average viewer probably thinks that PIPA is Prince William's sister-in-law and SOPA is a Mexican pastry.

Psh, pretty much no one was paying attention to SOPA prior to the last few days. And when this crap ends, everyone will go back to living in their little holes until they're told to be angry again.

This **** is just Net Neutrality with the Government replacing big business.

I really hope those of you who are Americans, are taking it upon yourselves to write to your representatives.

As a Canadian, these sorts of situations are double frustrating. Aside from the obvious fact that SOPA is a major problem, what's frustrating is that as a Canadian, I don't have a representative I can write to to directly affect the outcome. And frankly, as must of us are aware, if America passes a law like SOPA, it won't really matter if I live in Canada or not. It won't matter WHERE in the world you live, you'll be affected. Even if the exact or similar laws never make it to Canada, it really won't make a difference, the damage will be done.

Which brings me to my point. If you're an American citizen of voting age, PLEASE write your representative and tell him you oppose SOPA. You're not just doing it for you, you're doing it for the ENTIRE Internet, and only you have the power to do it. The rest of the world is really relying on you guys to not let this happen.

We the people of the United States of America broke away from imperialists and now look what we have become. Ideals, Beliefs, and Freedom that is what our four fathers fought for and now we are slowly becoming what we hated. The governemnt is the main cause but we cannot allow the blame to be put fully on their shoulders alone. We have become comfortable and weak as a people and it's time our voice is heard once again. Sopa is just the beginning of a long list of bills that will completely deteiorate our country as a whole and possibly the world. Freedom of speech, our ammendments are slowly being torn away and if sopa passes it is a huge blow to the American people. The people should not be afraid of their government it should be the government that fears it's people. Once our voices are muffled it will never be heard again unless we take actions into our own hands. As I type this post if sopa is passed my voice and my words may be altered or not even accepted and this site will be shut down if it is not monitered properly witht he governments requirements. Don't let sopa pass protest right to your congressman it means something!!! Don't sit at home and expect the problem to fix itself because it will not happen. God Bless America and the beacon of hope which our country carries brighter than any other
