Mass Effect 3 Is So Gay, I'm S***ing Rainbows

Posted on Friday, March 2 @ 13:51:38 Eastern by

CVG released a YouTube video of a love scene in Mass Effect 3 between Commander Shepard and a male lover. The video has already been made private, but as Kotaku reports, it was being spammed with 1,320 dislikes to 292 likes.

My reaction as a gay man? Uh huh...

First off, I hear crap like this all the time. And really, they're YouTube comments. YouTube. I'm not sure if all of them are truly homophobes or just pricks with a keyboard. This is the Internet, yes?

At any rate, I'm still befuddled by how much people can get so worked up over something that doesn't impact them at all. The only way a gay sex scene affects you is if you actually clicked on the video, knowing full well that it was called "Shepard Gay Sex Scene". If you're so angry about it, why did you click on it in the first place? No one forced the video down your throat and asked you to take it.

I can go through all the complaints and counter them with logic, but I don't really care, mainly because the people who make those kind of complaints don't care about logic. I've heard all the complaints before: how sex shouldn't be in video games (yet murder should?), how gays spread AIDS (and straight people don't?), how gay sex would kill the human race (as if gays and lesbians wouldn't have sex with each other if we needed to), and how gays aren't natural (yet nearly every mammal species on the planet has had documented gay sex). It's just a broken record vs. broken record at this point.

All this is just Internet rage -- a bunch of dicks voting with their... dicks. If it was "Shepard Lesbian Sex Scene", the replay button would have been, how would they say, raped. And for how much haters talk about gay sex, they should stop acting like annoying girlfriends and do it already. Yappity, yap, yap, yap, yap... My balls can't take it.

Maybe this won't happen in my lifetime, but I can't wait for the day when people see something gay and just move on without giving two shits. I would rather talk about video games, anyway...

"I can't wait for the day when people see something gay and just move on without giving two *****" I think that's what a lot of people already do but to have an entire population the void of ignorance is a tougher sell.

Yeah, you're NEVER going to get 100% of people to agree on ANYTHING, especially in the US. I read an article recently that was trying to put the fact that 20% of the US population thinks Obama is a foreign-born, secret Muslim into a broader context by showing how 20% of the population thinks Bush knew about 9/11 before it happened, 20% of the population believes the moon landings were faked, and over 30% believe in ghosts. I mean, there's still people who believe that the Earth is flat and all evidence to the contrary is fake!

As far as gay rights go, we are doing so much better today in the US than even 10 years ago. Things are progressing a lot faster (and more smoothly) than civil rights did, and there will be an absolute sea change in the coming decades when you look at how much acceptance there is in the younger generations vs. the older ones (just have to wait for those bigots to die out). Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the like/dislike votes & comments for that YouTube posting was tampered with by an anti-gay organization. They've organized to tamper with online polls and other things in the past.

Nick, glad you're standing up and defending homosexuals. Really, I don't give a damn if someone is gay or not. Same with different races. I'll make a stereotypical joke directly in front of a Asian, Mexican, etc. I just don't care about those differences. I'm sure most people on this forum board and those who comment on this will agree with me.

Gay elf on dwarf steamy Dragon Age action all day every day. People are pretty uncomfortable with their sexuality. We were taught humility as children after all. People have a hard time supporting anything unless they have a personal stake, or its so socialized that they can't refuse for fear of rejection. Most people don't actually ponder the idea of freedom, they just say its important because its tradition, not that they would even understand the concept in practice.

    Eh...

I am bisexual and I think the gay Shepard is kind of stretching it, mainly because the character is established to be heterosexual in the previous games.

Granted yes, but the thing is its hard to rationalize it after three games. If they did like they planned and made Kaiden a same-sex romance in game one (which was cut) then I would be more ok with it. Instead we got either Kelly Chambers as an Easter egg romance, and Liara who doesn't count because of the mono-gender thing.

I have to agree that from a storytelling standpoint, it's waaay too late to make Shepherd's sexuality questionable.

I have to disagree with everyone saying it's too late to make male Shephard gay or bi. It really depends on how you played Shephard in your own games & think of him.

what lawn gnome said. Opposing the fact that Male Sheppard being gay now and not before is more of a personal opinion then judging Bioware's take on homosexuality.

Not my Sheppard, i finish all my games without any relationship whatsoever (seriously, the only female i found remotely worth the time bedding was Samara... and you can't even KISS HER!). Waiting for the right man...
... And Kaiden is still alive i like to point out, still rocking his abs.

Can I say I really don't care, because I won't play it that way. In Skyrim I played Heterosexual, but there are no sex scene in it. Anyway if you get turned on by video game sex scenes you have bigger problems to deal with than most people do.

People aren't complaining because they're bigots, they're complaining because it's poorly done, just thrown in, and poorly written. They're not complaining because gay romance is wrong, they're complaining because it's gay romance done wrong

No, its mostly complaining because they're bigots. You can dress it up all you want to, you can try to say it's this, or that... but it is plain bigotry. Just look at the comments, or listen to the arguments. Most of the time its homophobic rants, and hatred. Rarely do I see a comment "It isn't done right, they're pandering." I see some bloggers typing that, sure, and maybe a few people in comments, but they're the minority. Remember, modern gamers are man-children, they can, and will complain about everything, in the most violent, loud way possible. They're crass, disrespectful, opinionated, entitled and immature. Remember the lesbian sex scene in Mass Effect 1? Yeah that caused a lot of uproar in the gamer community, in the media (and more than a few misreports courtesy of Fox News), and in parents everywhere. It's just plain ignorance, and bigotry. Also, people on the internet just tend to be dicks, because they can, myself included. Never forget that factor. =P

I think a decent amount of the hate is not from people going "This is bad because it's gay" but people going "This is bad because it's bad." And it is. The scene in question? Forced and stereotypical as ****.

Bioware's portrayal of gays is full of stereotypes and awful pandering. And that is my problem with it.

Pretty much this. From a company that prides itself on character interaction and dialogue, it's kind of an embarrassment.

It's kinda funny this being posted today, because tonight in Sydney it's the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, possibly the biggest night of the year in Sydney (next to new years eve). I find what you write a little bit alien to me, for the simple fact alone that Sydney has the biggest gay and lesbian community in Australia and i rarely see any hate towards homosexuality.
That being said i do find it very weird that on this night of celebration of homosexuality that you get a lot of, what we call westies and bogans (hicks, rednecks and hillbillies i guess) come in to the city just to hate on the gays. I've never understood why they put so much effort into something like that? But then i also truly believe that all hate against gay people is really latent homosexuality anyway.
And this is all coming from a straight guy. I could tell you the problem is where you live, but you're talking about the internet, which happens to contain the single largest group of idiots in the world.

"I've never understood why they put so much effort into something like that?"

The TV Tropes people call it bile fascination. When Howard Stern's radio show started hitting big, his most dedicated listeners were people who hated his show. Fans would listen for about an hour a day, haters for about two and a half hours. They listened for the same reason - they wanted to hear what he would say next. I don't understand it myself. If I find something repulsive I avoid it.

GR community, I raise a Mountain Dew in salute. Reminds me why I come back here every day.

Anyone notice how no one gives one third of a **** about the female on female scenes, or worse, goes "That's haaaaawt." Show the other side of it and it's all "Ahmigawd Ahmigawd, did i just turn ghey???!!!"

As a straight guy, there's a few historical "gay" men I'd like these internet bigots to meet. We'll start with... any Spartan male who ever lived? In the unlikely event there are any left still alive after we can expand the list.

Yep, and according to Rick Santorum they'd do it to animals too if we'd let them. He has a very vivid imagination, must spend a lot of time thinking about these things, and probably does so on the toilet while playing with his "PS Vita" (like Anthony in this week's podcast).

What if they are just more surprised than mad? I have nothing against the gays, but commander shepards image is completely masculine, it seems weird that he would be gay :( and i swear i say that with no malice towards homosexuals, its just seems strange. im drunk and i was raised by a lesbian, lol maybe thats why i got a different take on it

I think as video games become a more accepted medium for storytelling that homosexuality will be see more often. Homosexuality is part of modern society and video games developers don't want to exclude anyone as a potential customer. I'm like FemShep anyway.
