Medal of Honor Banned From Military Base GameStops

Posted on Thursday, September 9 @ 14:45:09 Eastern by

Because of the ability to choose Taliban fighters in the multiplayer mode of Medal of Honor, GameStop stores in Army and Air Force bases will not be stocking the game.

For those specific stores, all marketing material for Medal of Honor has been pulled and they will not be taking any reservations for the game, as explained in one of their internal memos:

"GameStop has agreed out of respect for our past and present Men and Women in uniform we will not carry Medal of Honor in any of our AAFES based stores. At this time it does not include our 4 stores on Marine Installations. GameStop fully supports AAFES in this endeavor and is sensitive to the fact that in multiplayer mode, one side will assume the role of Taliban fighters."

Of course, someone could just go get Medal of Honor somewhere outside of the base and return with it. In fact, I'm sure that's going to happen. A lot. This also includes a lot of Taliban killing... virtually, of course...

I kinda this this is a bad business decision since those service men/women like to blast stuff to oblivion in video games regardless being taliban or US force (i think), but i can see where their perspectives lie.

"in multiplayer mode, one side will assume the role of Taliban fighters." So was Modern Warfare 2 banned as well? I don't remember reading anything about that...

Some ambitious people could form a courier service for soldiers within the bases.

Couldn't you play as the terrorist in call of duty? But then, if the military feels uncomfortable about this, then i won't complain.

And nick... that picture is just so gay and yet so awesome!

I wonder how many games EVER MADE have featured US troops being killed... think it's over 100? The earliest I ever remember doing it was Command & Conquer: Red Alert back in 1996 as a Russian.

Yet another reason to not shop at Gamestop.

Have some perspective, here. Call of Duty is a strikingly realistic game. I was enlisted from 2001 to 2005. There were some parts in the first Modern Warfare that made me put the controller down. Some of the people who would be seeing this game would likely be returning from a tour in Afghanistan or Iraq where they lived through the same scenarios that the game has people play. Part of their rehabilitation is to distance themselves from anything that reminds them of what they survived. The people who are enlisted and want to play this game will drive 15 minutes off base and buy it for themselves. It's not like it's going to be banned out right. It just won't be available on base.

Hate Gamestop for any number of reasons, but don't be retarded and hate them for trying to respect the people who went through what they've been through.

Also, it's not such a big deal that one side IS the Taliban. The issue comes from the fact that they will have to kill American soldiers. "America's Army" got around this by making the other team look like the Taliban, even if they were being played by someone who, on their screen, was on the US side.

If you can play as the Taliban, are one of the kill streak rewards "stoning"? Cause that would be topical.

Just because 5% of people in the military don't want to see realistic war violence doesn't mean they need to pull it from shelves on base. That means those people need to not play it. This is America. As a Marine Corp veteran myself, I can say for a fact that anyone on active duty will be exposed more to Modern Warfare 2 in the barracks than they will at the PX and/or GameStop.

So what are they going to stop selling Blackhawk Down? And Jarhead? To me those are much more striking than a video game.
