Microsoft Can't Seem to Kinect with Japan

Posted on Monday, November 8 @ 17:27:50 Eastern by
Haven't had a chance to try Kinect yet? I hear there's no waiting in Japan.

Microsoft's always had trouble getting the land of the rising sun to adopt the Xbox. Now it seems like the company will have just as much trouble getting the land of small living rooms to pick up a Kinect.

These pictures showed up on the Japanese internet and showcase a Kinect demo station in Tokyo. The photographer reported that the photos were taken between 1 and 2 in the afternoon.

This seems like a no-brainer. Domiciles in Japan typically don't have the kind of space Kinect requires. I can't imagine all that furniture rearranging is good for the feng shui anyways.

People might also be ashamed to dance around in public. Michael Scott says "In Japan, you must always commit suicide to avoid embarrassment."

The Kinect is very impractical when inevitably compared with the easy to pick up Wii motion sensing system. Japanese gamers are all about pick-and-play and aren't the gimmicky sort who drool over specs. It will be a hard sale in Japan, just like the Xbox 360 itself because of the target market. I've lived there 5 years, and I know how Japanese gamers think.

That cordoned off space is the size of most apartments in Tokyo.

If they wanna sell in Japan, they need to make a game where you control a giant robot. Otherwise cash out and exit the market now.

Um, you think a game where you control a giant robot would NOT sell well in America? I beg to differ!
