Microsoft has "No Plans" for Another Xbox

Posted on Wednesday, November 10 @ 11:16:38 Eastern by
Microsoft is putting all their eggs in Kinect's basket... for now.

Traditionally, new home consoles release every 5 years or so. That would make it high time for a new Xbox. However, this generation of consoles is going to be slightly different, and instead of new consoles being released, console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft plan to extend the life of their existing offerings with new ways to play.

In a recent interview, Microsoft's Xbox & Entertainment Direct, Stephen McGill discussed the future of the Xbox brand, and how there are currently "no plans" to bring another Xbox to the market.

"You'll continue to see us bring amazing new experiences to the console, without you having to buy a brand new console. A couple of years ago we didn't have movies, Sky, Facebook and Twitter - now we've got things like Kinect. We'll continue to evolve those gaming and entertainment experiences through the power of software updates, rather than new chipsets and plastic."

Despite executives firmly denying that new consoles are being planned, the amount of research and development time it takes to conceptualize and produce a new console, means next gen iterations of the Xbox and PlayStation are more than likely in the works already.

When do you think the big 3 will announce new consoles?

While they may not have plans for another "Xbox", you can bet your ass they have plans for another video game home-entertainment device. While I see this generation lasting longer than the previous one, I do not see this as the last round of home consoles from Microsoft. They can't stop at 2, that's just ridiculous.

Or maybe they're afraid their next console will suffer from poor hardware design even after 4 bajillion dollars is put into R&D lol!

Maybe their trying to play the wiseguys this time, and wait to hear about Sony's next console before they start making plans for their next one. Hmm...

The 360 will last for awhile, but I'm with Incipio on this one: they'll find ways for consumers to drop triple-digits on something in the next coming years.

Even if Kinect and Move tank (I hope so), the 360 and PS3 easily have at least a couple more years of life left, maybe three. The Wii, not so much.

I think the console makers are lost as to how to proceed, sure you can stuff more hardware into a box and call it the next revolution, but nowadays there are three 'viable' consoles besides the PC.

In any other industry this would be ridiculous, like buying a movie that you could only watch on your WarnerPlay, Paramountix or Universalous - depending on what company made the movie.

A console is little more than a collection of repurpoused PC parts these days, and developers are becoming less and less willing to rewrite their creation in multiple languages.

After all a muliplatform game is the same as saying a 'non optimized' game.

    @ De-Ting: Good call, dude.

@ 213EDD: Also good call, dude.

Seriously, though, video games are not going anywhere. This industry is worth more than Hollywood today, Microsoft knows it, Sony knows it. They aren't going to let themselves fall out of the market for something like the ******* Kinect. Motion gaming is a fad. It's been popularized by the growing number of casual gamers who wanna be able to jump and do something simple and easy without actually commiting the time it takes for real games. By real, I mean things like Final Fantasy, or Borderlands, instead of Wii Sports or Kinectimals (what a stupid f*cking name...).
