Move A Million Moves

Posted on Thursday, October 21 @ 16:13:11 Eastern by
Lack of NPDs got you down? No more fanboy-number-smashing in your favorite forums? Sony's got your back with one sales-data tidbit: 1,000,000 Moves have been... well, moved since September 17.

No, the Move ball doesn't taste different depending on what color it is. Despite that, Sony's managed to get Move controller units into one million American (north and south) hands. That's a lot of swinging, slashing, and rubber balls.

I'm not surprised that the controller itself has sold that many units. You can't buy just one. Most of the games I've played are best played with two separate Move controllers. Look out for my reviews of the hardware, Sports Champions, Start the Party, and EyePet soon. What I'm much more interested in is what games have been selling with the Move hardware.

Further stoking the fires of Move is Jack Tretton's comments to Reuters. "Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said the company does not expect to have enough supply on hand until February 2011. 'We had to go back and increase production twice, we're absolutely maxed out right now,' Tretton said." (Full Story Here)

Does Oprah have a bunch of Moves stashed under the seats in the audience?

    Congrats Sony lied to you.

They did NOT sell 1M units.

    They SHIPPED 1M units.

    Analysts guess 300K were SOLD.

Oh come on, in a PR setting, shipped, sold, whats the difference? Its still the same gimmick that the Wii couldn't really perfect, I betcha the Move will wind up as another flop. Just my guess, of course.

@JonahFalcon: As far as publishers are concerned, shipping one million units to retailers is the same as selling one million units. The retailers have bought the units from them. I doubt those units are sitting on store shelves not getting picked up at all, especially if Sony is getting more orders from retailers.

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have sold 1 million units. Every store I go to is sold out of the wands.
