DAILY MANIFESTO

My 3DS Game Library

Posted on Thursday, February 14 @ 17:29:46 Eastern by

I was not an exceptionally early adopter of the Nintendo 3DS, but I did manage to get in a few months prior to the Ambassador Program cut-off and price drop. The game that finally got me to shell out $250 for the handheld was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was well worth it in the end. You wanna sell a system? Put the best looking, best playing version of the greatest game of all time on it.

I took advantage of a deal at the time and bought Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars while I was at it, but there's a reason you don't see that here (and really, Fire Emblem: Awakening which I have as a digital download is 10x better now). Star Fox 64 3D also made the 3DS purchase a must, given my love for Nintendo, the Nintendo 64, Nintendo 64 games, Nintendo 64 games that also have 64 in the title and so forth.

Super Mario 3D Land came after GameRevolution's glowing review, and the rest landed on my shelf out of curiosity, review assignment, or peer pressure (Resident Evil: Revelations). That gigantor Kid Icarus: Uprising box sure sticks out like a sore thumb, but it hides nicely in the back.

Are you thinking about getting a 3DS? Did you see all of the Nintendo Direct announcements this morning, including a release date for Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a new Mario & Luigi game, a Donkey Kong Country Returns game for 3DS, and of course, Mario Golf's 3DS installment?

If you're already enjoying glasses-free 3D, what's on your shelf?

I just got my 3DS XL and I'm excited for all these new games that has been announced. I only have Fire Emblem: Awakening at the moment but I used to have Mario 3D Land & Zelda: Ocarina of Time but I sold them with my old 3DS. I plan on buying Zelda back but first I'm really waiting on Luigi's Mansion and other new titles. Animal Crossing looks weird but it's really popular, so I might check that out, I just don't get it. Can't wait for Mario Golf, will be buying that day one. Some eShop titles look interesting too, like HarmoKnight. I really don't regret buying back a 3DS, especially an XL. Very exciting games coming for us 3DS owners!

Luigi's Mansion looks like a lot of fun, but I'm probably most excited about Animal Crossing.

Can you explain to me why Animal Crossing is so popular? I never really played it, it looks like a "special" kind of game. What's so fun? What do you do in it that makes it addictive?

There's a ton of stuff to collect, like sets of furniture and your house just grows bigger and bigger. There's a rhythm to the gameplay, the economy, and the way the townsfolk pick up what you say and use it later helps breathe life into the whole experience.

It's certainly more of a peaceful, see what you find in the game world that day kind-of-thing. You can go fishing and try to catch every type of fish or you can dig up treasures around town. In New Leaf for the 3DS you no long work for Tom Nook working to pay off your debt. Instead you're the f***ing mayor in town and you can customize everything, including where buildings go, what the layout of your town is etc. It's hard to put into words obviously. I love the games, but I do get tired of them eventually.

    My 3DS collection is
    Lego Star Wars III
    Samurai Warriors Chronicles
    Ocarina of Time 3D
    Theatrhythm
    Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
    Scribblenauts Unlimited

Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong and Luigi's Mansion i have my eye on as well. Also tried a demo of Naruto Powerful Shippuden and liked it. Not a huge fan of Naruto anymore but they used Lee my favorite character, and its kind of like a parody of Naruto with a funny artstyle and fun 2D beatem up gameplay.

I've gotta say, I love my 3DS. I just wish it had the specs of the Vita. :(

Fire Emblem: Awakening is great thus far as I'm sure you'll agree. But my DS was wore out from playing and replaying all the games I have for it, so now I can wear out my 3DS with them.

OT: If I had a 3DS, I would buy mot of these games, but none of them are system sellers for me. I'm happy with my Vita.

If I actually had a 3DS, my library would consist of two titles: Ocarina of Time and 3D Land. The next two would OBVIOUSLY have to be Pokémon X & Y, 'cause I'm cool like that. 8)

Unfortunately, I'm in a smaller town about an hour away from any really great games stores, best thing I have in my hometown is a WalMart that does a half-assed job of keeping titles in stock, so it looks like I'll have to be going the digital download route for Fire Emblem this week, but below is my collection, most of which I play quite often:

    Mariokart 7
    Mario 3D Land
    Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Resident Evil Revelations
    Paper Mario
    LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
    Ridge Racer
    Pro Evolution Soccer 2012
    Rollercoaster Tycoon 3D
    Mario 3D Tennis
    StarFox 64
Metal Gear Solid 3 in 3D
    Pilotwings 3D
    Angry Birds Trilogy

Dan, I've always been a huge fan of the Rollercoaster Tycoon series from the get-go and really am waiting for the rumored Rollercoaster Tycoon 4, so I figured 3D would just be a filler for now, didn't expect too much out of it really and something new to put in the machine while waiting for Fire Emblem, but for what it is, it's actually a fairly playable and detailed entry in the series. Nothing beats RCT 3 so far though.

Just bought a 3DS XL to play Fire emblem awakening... just to realise its being relesed in APRIL here in Europe. Hate region locking and can't even begin to understand how or why it should take 2 months to move a game from an english speaking continent to another english speaking continent. I bought a DSTWO flashcard and am playing the old GBA Fire emblem games on it now though :)
