Netflix Picks of the Week (09-06-2010)
Posted on Tuesday, September 7 @ 14:52:53 Eastern by Blake_Morse
In between the booze, the burgers and PAX we found some time to kick back with some flicks and veg out. Here's some stuff you can watch as you nurse away your Labor Day hangovers.
Daniel: Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson - If you've never seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I pity you. If you have, you owe it to yourself to check out this documentary about the man behind that work of mind-boiling neurosis. Besides offering up some interesting facts about the Rolling Stone writer, the movie is narrated by Johnny Depp. All around a very interesting watch.
Nick: Ponyo - I want to know Hayao Mayazaki's secret. How does one seemingly so old remain in touch with his inner child? As a master of children's animation, he typically crafts stories for adolescents on the cusp of maturity; here, he lends a brush to innocent love between a 5-year-old boy named Sosuke and a magical fish with a face that he names Ponyo. Escaping from her wizardly human father's grasp, Ponyo swims away to an island shoreline where she is found by Sosuke out of curiosity. Ponyo soon decides she wants to join the human world, but to do so, she must relinquish her magic abilities.
Blake: American Dad - I remember thinking to myself a few months ago that if they'd only get more of FOX's animated line-up on instant queue that it would be perfect. Well, we're well on our way.(I still want The Simpsons and The Critic! C'mon people!)
Much like the The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones debate, the American Dad vs. Family Guy argument marches on. For what it's worth I prefer American Dad. Because it has a plot and characters with consistent personalities as opposed to being nothing more than a vessel for pop culture references and poop jokes. Not that Family Guy and poop jokes aren't funny, it's just that if I have to choose one, I pick the show with a story over the show where they can't write enough material for one episode so they throw in a five minute long fight with a chicken.
What have you been watching while recouperate? Feel free to leave your own picks in the comments section below!

My girlfriend has been forcing me to watch the Buffy series. We're on the forth season. It's OK, if a bit cheesy in some areas. To counter that, I've been watching the X-Files while she's away. Don't tell her...
