Outrage: ModNation Racers Vita Excludes Online Racing

Posted on Thursday, January 12 @ 02:31:08 Eastern by Heath_Hindman
"I am shocked and chagrined, mortified and stupefied."
-Jackie Chiles, fictional lawyer.

A chat with the developers of upcoming PS Vita title ModNation Racers: Road Trip may prove to be a huge foot bullet for Sony, as it reveals that for the first time ever, a title in the series will not include online races. The PSBlog forum thread where this was discovered is already ablaze with hate and declarations of canceled pre-orders.

And it should be, because this is stupid. Most of the fun of ModNation Racers on either PSP or PS3 is seeing the goofy creations other people come up with, seeing what tracks they design, and seeing how other players react to your creations. Unless you've got a house full of gamers and plan on buying a bundle of Vitas, this is a kick in the balls.

Half of the appeal of the Vita is that it's supposed to be this portable gaming device that destroys all competitors in terms of raw technical power and the cool shit that it can do. How is it, then, that it lacks the online that the 6-year-old PSP pulls off? Not including ModSpot, okay. Sure, if you want it to be PS3-only like that, whatever, but to remove the online competition?

Lately, it feels like every single day brings some piece of shitty news that makes the Vita less appealing, little by little. I already have a Vita, but for those that don't, this is one less reason to get it. For those still getting the system, there goes a potentially appealing game, the money for which might very well go another competitive kart racer with online play. Remind me because I can't remember: do those do pretty well at selling systems?
