Parents Upset About Adoption in Portal 2

Posted on Tuesday, May 17 @ 20:52:37 Eastern by

There are a ton of different insults you could levy at the moronic parents and news reporters hoping to get that video game controversy bump. Coincidentally, a lot of those good insults you could use come from Portal 2.

I'll let you decide what to think. Who's at fault here? Valve? The parents? Or the news team?

"You mean I have to talk to my kids about sensitive topics?!"

    1. Not everything goes according to plan. A good parent doesn't complain about the little things their kids are supposed to. He handles it.
    2. That's a part of his responsibility as an adoptive parent. He shouldn't be so sensitive if the kid isn't phased by it.
    3. Kids at school have probably/will probably say worse things. If he can't talk about it when Portal 2 jokes about it, what will happen then?

I was laughing at the jokes even in this segment, but if you're a ten year old adopted kid then yeah that could be insulting...Then again their kid claims she didn't hear it, and I'm sure kids at school make far worse jokes if they learn about it.

You know, the robot is calling the player a "fatty" in the same line they showed there. Should parents of obese children also be upset?

Or maybe it should just be accepted that this is a character who's purpose in the game is to throw out random insults for the purpose of humor. Maybe, like many comedic routines, he might go a little far or offend somebody now and then, but that's going to happen in a child's life anyway. Paul's right, kids her age at school can probably say more hurtful things regarding a variety of subjects. At least with that game they know it's not personal. I can absolutely see where he's coming from though. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it.

On the other hand, I have to say I applaud that father for good parenting. He picked the game his child played based on criteria important to him, checked the rating, and then played it with his child. When he found something he felt was inappropriate, he dealt with it the best way he knew how (though turning off the game immediately might have actually called MORE attention to the line than if he had just shrugged it off). THESE are the types of parents we need more of.

I worked at a Gamestop in high school and these were the types of parents I loved seeing come in, rather than the Mothers who just picked up GTAIV for their 8 year olds and shrugged or ignored any mentions the rating.

If a video game was deeply offending me I would just stop playing it. If a game was saying something offensive to my daughter I'd just stop playing it and stop my daughter from playing it. Once the game was turned off I'd be a man and have a real conversation with my daughter about why she has no reason to feel bad about being adopted. Not wuss out by calling the local news hoping to get attention or possibly call the game creators and whine about their creative work as if they're going to change it just for me.

I seem to remember that the next line was something like:
"There's nothing wrong with being adopted, and she's not fat, just look at her... you moron."
That's offensive to people who make fun of orphans, calling them morons just for their wanton cruelty, that's just wrong.

The news channel is at fault here. The father acted appropriately. He didn't damn Valve to hell and blame video games for society's ills. The statement put him and his family in an awkward position and that sucks. But don't try and limit art and free speech just because a select minority is offended. At least he was playing the game with his kid. Local news had nothing better to report on other than this non-story? Oh right...it's local news.

That guy literally has no idea what to tell his kid. He was hoping she would move out before asking him why she had white parents.

Gosh, people are uptight. I was adopted from Brazil, my whole family is white. My reaction to this? Laughter. As a kid, there was the occasional rough patch in dealing with the fact that I was adopted or people's reaction to it, but this still wouldn't have phased me at all. I could go on...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if someone is ADOPTED, doesn't that mean that they have parents? That ADOPTED them?

Yossarian29 - You're right, but this isn't an error by Valve. To explain it (WARNING, PORTAL 2 SPOILERS AHEAD):
GLaDOS keeps making fun on Chell for being an orphan, i.e. has no parents. Wheatley takes over GLaDOS' roll, and tries to do the same thing, but he's not very smart and keeps messing it up. This is one of his messed up attempts to to taunt Chell.

Who's playing this game with a 10-year-old kid (adopted or not) because they think it's EDUCATIONAL? Please tell me Jack Thompson was the one to tell them about this. PLEASE follow up on this, you local news people... I wanna hear about how they're adopted daughter - who seems happy as hell in those clips with controller in hand - is about to go crazy and start running people over with a stolen car because "Portal said it was OK."

Also, as someone with a thin/average-build, I am VERY upset with the lack of non-adopted skinny people jokes in Portal 2. I DEMAND AIR TIME.

I love how they completely cut everything off right after the "insensitive" comment. Maybe if the dad had listened to the whole conversation in the game, he would have heard the part where Glados says there's nothing wrong with being adopted and how she is not fat.

@UpAndAtThem Thats kind of what I thought. The phrase itself seems contradictory: something that would be picked up on by someone not 10, maybe. I am still blown away by peoples' ability to ignore common sense. If a dumb character is being characteristically dumb and insensitive, that must mean the company that made the game HATES ORPHANS! Thats why their games are so good. Orphan blood.
