PAX Prime 2010 Day 1

Posted on Saturday, September 4 @ 11:30:53 Eastern by Blake_Morse

Yesterday the doors of the Washington Convention Center were flung open to a sea of gamer geek girls and boys so they could revel in an orgy of game demos and corporate-branded swag. Of course GR was there; the word "orgy" was involved.

I've got to say after attending major events such as E3 and Comi-Con this year, PAX is a like a walk through the park. Walkways are manageable with very little pushing or shoving, if any, the community is super-friendly and the line to play Halo: Reach does not stretch on forever like a ride at Disneyland. I was actually shocked by the fact that before 5pm the first day we'd already perused most of what there is to see here.

At night there was a slew of parties for all those attending. Almost all of them were free with a pass. Me and my crew decided to check out the official PAX concert featuring performances by the Protomen, Anamanaguchi, Metroid Metal and the Minibosses. The Protomen came on first and while I wasn't much for their Meatloaf-inspired Opera-Rock, I was impressed by their stage presence, especially their use of custom Proto and Mega-Man helmets. Their songs could've been a couple minutes shorter though.

After the over-epicness, it was time for the restrained and shy members of Anamanaguchi to take stage...and seriously trainwreck. The lead guitarist was having all sorts of tech difficulties and was adding fuel to the fire by neurotically blabbering apologies into his mic over and over instead of just cutting to the inevitability of sucking it up and playing through it all. Poor kid. I couldn't bear to watch it. So I left and headed to the next available party where I proceeded to get smashed off free rounds of Maker's Mark. All in all, not a bad way to end the first night of PAX.

We'll be checking out even more today, but for now scope out this video of me running around and making an ass out of myself in public. (I do it all for you, people.) And just like Comic-Con, Cameraman Morris is in full effect. You can see his highlights from Day 1 here.

The next haiku prize should be a full size poster of Blake wearing the zero suite.

@uglykitten I don't think Geneva Convention accords and Human Rights Council would allow for that...
