Pissy Hackers Force Top-Ranked Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Player To Reset Stats

Posted on Tuesday, January 8 @ 15:22:56 Eastern by

The immaturity reeks.

Looking at leaderboards can be disenchanting. Many occasions, there are hackers or glitchers at the top of the heap just to prove they can do it. But then there are legitimate players like Xbox Live's Retrominano whose prowess at Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 placed him as top dog, the #1 rank for "Career - All Time." Apparently, to butthurt pricks, that's a crime.

As presented on Reddit, not only did random people constantly pester Retrominano and randomly join his play sessions (in some cases to grab his IP address), but he was subject to continuous Distributed Denial of Service attacks which in his words only allowed him to play "10 minutes per day."

He attempted to reset his IP multiple times but to no avail, leaving him with the only option to reset his in-game stats and return to Level 1. He's now rank #10,796,211.

So yep, another story about a few pissants ruining it for everyone else.

    Successful trolls are successful.

In all seriousness, people take ranks too seriously and I cringe every time people want more comparative stats or achievements throw into the game for it.

Should have called up his ISP. Xbox Live actually has a faq page for dealing with this sort of thing.

I don't know if he boosted, cheated, hacked, etc...but his rank plus $.02 won't get you **** where I am from.

I may be wrong, but in my experience the people that are ranked in the overall top of these games (CoD, BF, etc.) are guilty of boosting, cheating, hacking, etc. He probably got what he deserved.

This guy is an achievement whore. 1 year of XBL and he has a better gamerscore than me.

My GS is nearing the 40k mark and I've got all of my friends surpassed by at least 5k, but I've had my console since about six months after launch. I'm a bit of a self-confessed achievement whore, but I don't take it as far as some people do.

I've seen people with 100k+ scores, and there are apparently a couple of dudes who are in an actual race to hit 1 million. They have sponsors and everything that are not only constantly sending them new games to complete (though I've heard they are beating both North American AND PAL versions of some games that have easier achievements to get), but I've read that these sponsors are actually PAYING them and sending them free stuff to do this full-time so they don't have to get real jobs, so as not to interrupt their grand works (not sure if that part's actually true or not, but I wouldn't be the lease bit surprised).

Unless the game uses some sort of matchmaking system, then he will be stuck with newbies.

Sounds like a few people in this "community" are a little biased and jealous as well. Wihout knowing a single fact about this gamer personally, you trolls assumed he was a cheating, achievement whore / braggart who got what he deserved, and his leader boards rank means squat. Bunch of toads.

Damn you, now if I rise to the bait I will have proven you right. My old roommate was part of the old PMS clan, and she was sponsored. Some people take this stuff seriously, maybe you don't, and that's fine. Why immediately assume the person cheated their way to the top and runs smack all day?

Is he a pro gamer? Does he get paid to maintain that rank? If so, who cares. He'll spend 80 hours a week to get back to high ranks if he's really any good or just boosting/cheating/hacking or whatever.

Apparently everyone who posted here cares, they took the time click the link and read the piece. Or did you just come here to call this guy a cheater and loudmouth? If no one cared then there would be no leaderboards, no gamerscore, and no one here.

    exactly.

I'm sure some people here couldn't care less about being top of the leader board in CoD, but some people out there obviously do care about this sort of stuff (and some people care about it to the degree that they will harass people over it).

it might seem "cool" to act nonchalant about the whole thing and act like nobody should give a damn about stuff like this, but the fact of the matter is this is a website that is dedicated to video games. to a lot of people out there the very act of participating in such a community would seem like a colosal waste of time.

remember different people have different interests.

It isn't that big of a deal, if he's that good he will regain his spot. If he is smart maybe he should contact microsoft or proper authorities and help work on stopping attacks. Im sure microsoft would help one of their best customers. Besides gamer scores are just a feature who some people care for and others don't. Honestly though what happened to enjoying games instea of worrying about my rank.

Some gamers just want to watch the leaderboards burn. I feel sorry for someone who plays a game and is harassed just because hes gotten to a top ranking, justifying it by the chance he may not have gotten there legitimately is a piss poor excuse. The same tactics could be used against someone, not for their ranking, but for whatever reason the hacker has created in their mind and I doubt anyone of us here would enjoy or accept if it happened to them. Schadenfreude is just as prevalent in the digital world as it is in the real world.

I think the comments are getting away from the real issue here. Regardless of how meaningless ones online ranking is to most of us (something he might take pride in though! Online identities are important), someone else didn't like that, and then decided to personally attack him for essentially no reason. All of us here play games (obviously, this is a gaming site), how would all of us feel if someone decided to make it impossible for us to game online out of spite, unless we reset out stats, or created a new account or whatever terms they chose to dictate to us. Yes it's pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a form of cyber bullying / cybercrime, and that this had a negative affect on the life of this gamer. Who knows, the next person could be one of us.

Statistically speaking, I don't think it's possible for him to regain the #1 rank for Career - All Time. However, if he was thinking about trying to get into a gaming league, or play competitively, his story is out there and people know that he's the former #1 rank. I think he'll be fine, and so will we.
