Survival Horror vs. Action Horror

Posted on Monday, January 9 @ 13:52:29 Eastern by

This image that I found on reddit nearly perfectly sums up the unfortunate transition from survival horror to action horror titles over the last ten years. Though I'm not a connoisseur of the horror genre, even I can tell that we've gone away from the psychological subtlety of survival horror with softly creepy environments, to the gun-toting, "kill that scary thing!" ragefest of action horror.

Also, since I have the opportunity... Apparently, in order to make a cover for a survival horror game, you need an image of a pale blonde woman either looking vacantly or down at her yourself or a panorama of a lot of hazy backgrounds. And to make a cover of an action horror game, you need a picture of a man (any dude will do...), someone violently covering someone's mouth (any mouth...), or a creepy hand (any hand, really).

Love the observation of the pale blonde and the hands. I never noticed that before, but damn, if the proof isn't in the pudding, eh?

What I don't love is how the survival horror genre is all but dead and the action horror genre has completely taken over. Even the titles alone were scarier in survival horror games. Action horror only needs the word "Dead" to be there and that will suffice.

I hope developers out there see this image, and use those words below as a storyboard on how to make a good survival horror game.

Horror, to me, is about being afraid for your life and running away. Not charging head on at scary as **** things and obliterating them. Fight or flight, right?

Survival Horror: Oh god oh god what is that where am I going? A door! Head there, walk up, it's okay, open the d-HOLY SH*T WHAT IS THAT DOING THERE RUN

Action Horror: A tentacle man in sunglasses? It's time to PUNCH A F*CKING BOULDER WRAAAAAAAAH

Condemned 1 is on the wrong side of the picture. To me it's the last good survival horror game besides Amnesia.

2 different things. i've loved anything horror for a long long time (my excitement levels soared when i saw The Thing game up there) but personally prefer action horror when it comes to games. i'd prefer to watch somebody play a survival horror.
blasting away for ages, then reaching a part where it is quiet and dark and you just know something will happen... just beats the opposite for me. which is quiet and dark for ages, then something happening all of a sudden.
i think i may be ranting here and not making any real point what-so-ever so i'm off to have a smoke n a coffee n play skyrim/bf3.

To me the right side has much better, and unless I'm mistaken generally higher reviewed, games so I suppose action horror isn't an abomination (see what I did there) by nature and perhaps it just comes down to personal preference.

I'm guessing there's really nothing to be "scared" of anymore. People got so used to being under pressure with limited items and monsters jumping from anywhere so the genre shifted to a more action packed genre. It's not bad but things do have to change up a bit.

what PE2 and REs were you playing wehre your under armed? the only one of these 4 games that you might have wepaon issues in is the first RE game, and even then its not that bad.

Also, puzzle solving? what does find key a for door a now count as a puzzle? old RE games are light on puzzles if there even tehre, they might be 2 actual puzzles i hasd to do in RE2, and one was optional, 3 had a few more but still no more than maybe 4.

Not to mention old REs are very combat driven, you could kill pretty much everything there was and still have ammo, with PE and PE2 being extremely combat driven

Perhaps on the Director's Cut editions, or on Easy. Not conserving ammo in 1&2, as well as Code Veronica, was a good way to force yourself to start the entire game over. Ammo conservation was a huge part of the first games, and they were definitely not combat driven.

And give them a break on the puzzles. Talking 10 year old games here, that is like saying Asteroids didn't look real enough.

I'll admit I've never finished Amnesia since it's a stressful game.

Video games are such a great medium for horror. Movies and books I just disassociate from the characters and use the build up to show its futility. Putting me in an interactive role engages my mind, and brings me into the environment of the story.

I personally can't wait for the upcoming titles: I Am Alive, Last of Us, Silent Hill HD, RE5, DS3...

I see they were smart enough to recognize that Dino Crisis 2 jumped all the way from survival horror into just action.

I feel like you can still make a case for Dead Space as survival horror. As action oriented as it is, it definitely has the creepiest atmosphere with its sound design, story, and lighting. Creating that atmosphere is no easy feat. Doom was always an action game, but Doom 3 definitely had some creepy moments too.

I feel like its much harder to create a true survival horror game solely based on technological advancements. There is no more loading times between rooms anymore like the original RE. If you're running from something it will chase you into the next room. Not only that, there is no reason for whatever monster is chasing you to stop chasing you until it forces you to fight. There needs to be some kind of safe haven to run to if you get in trouble (Safe room) and those don't really exist anymore.

The genre isn't entirely dead though, check out Silent Hill:Shattered memories. I didn't play much of it, but it certainly seems like you can't even fight back, you have to run. Also, you can't tell me you weren't freaked out the first time you ran into stalkers in DS2. F those things.

So no one has played Resistance? R2 had a few areas that I legitimately feared.

I'm sorry but Dead Space is a ****ing scary game, even if it is part of the "Action Horror" genre. I mean it's probably scarier for me since it's my first playthrough and I'm doing it on Hard and only with the Plasma Cutter but still! I also think that we pine for the old survival horror games with the same affection we do for the old Goldeneye game. We haven't seen a survival horror game in a while and we remember how cool those games were, but I bet you, if they start coming out with those games, we will all realize that hey, there's probably a reason why they don't make these games anymore.
