E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling
Posted on 06/15/13
E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

DAILY MANIFESTO

Tell GR: Election Day

Posted on Tuesday, April 10 @ 18:00:03 Eastern by

Well, I think it might finally be over. The lengthy Republic nominee race *hopefully* ended today, with Rick Santorum leaving the race for presidential candidacy, giving Mitt Romney the go ahead as the GOP candidate. We all knew it was going to happen this way, but it doesn't make it any less of a relief to finally finish....

Just in time for another heated, money-drenched, mud-slinging, Super PAC coordinating presidential campaign. I'm just so goddam sick of it, so instead, let's run the race today. It doesn't matter if you're Canadian, or from some other country, we still want to know....

If polls opened today, and you had to vote for Mitt Romney or Barack Obama in the next presidential election, who would you vote for and why?

Obama. He's not the best president we've ever had, but at least he's not named after a piece of sporting equipment. Also, as far as I can tell, he's not the Anti-Christ.

I'm Canadian, I'd totally pick Obama. TurinAlexander is right, he's not the best president ever, but Mitt Romney is F*CKING INSANE, so anyone who isn't him has to be alright.

Looking at the US situation from the outside here in Venezuela, I feel that unfortunately it doesn't matter if a Republican or Democrat president are on office, because neither person will be able to make effective changes on economic, social and military issues because of the pressure from both Right and Left Wing sectors with their own agendas, completely apart from what the people need. So while Obama has offered some token resistance against such interests, it's still not enough for true change to happen. So, and I'm sad to say this, the only way to bring true change I see are movements in the style of "Ocuppy", but of course much more focused on important issues, not simply vague stuff like "Wall Street is Evil", is not that simple, they may indeed be evil, but some, maybe a lot, of that evil is necessary, so you can't simply expect they close shop and go away. The People should focus, like in the 60's with the issue of civil rights, on one major issue at a time.

Getting priorities in order is difficult when everyone wants something different, but I agree that focusing is the only way to really affect reform.

The 60s protests weren't just about civil rights. They were also about women's rights, opposition to the war, economic inequality, student's rights, gay rights, counterculture, drugs, and sexual liberation. For protests like Occupy to be more successful they need to incorporate more ideas & people, not less.

The occupy movements too segmented with no unified leadership or goals. Couldve done much better if they had. Not to mention occupy Oaklands tendency towards crime by mob.

That's precisely why I said I was sad Occupy is the common people's best option for change, because of their lack of focus, and the bouts of petty, and not so petty vandalism and violence committed by them. It may sound trite and cliched, but every one of us all over the world that harbors even the slightest hope and desire to make things better, should study the life and works of Martin Luther King, the US, the whole world really, needs a man like him, untainted by partisan interests, without anger or resentment even in the face of tremendous injustices, always maintaining the focus of fixing those injustices, and not simply perpetuating them by committing them in an eye-for-an-eye fashion.

Important side note: Romney is opposed to bills like SOPA, Obama is not. I voted for Obama in '08. Don't re-elect him simply because you like him or his race. I like him, I just don't like his policies. Oh and gas is nearly $5 a gallon.

The high gas prices right now are due to hoarding & manipulation of oil futures, nothing else. Any politician who says he has a plan to lower gas prices that doesn't include regulating Wall Street is ignorant or lying. Oh, and Obama killed SOPA so I don't know where you're getting your info.

Hailing from the country most responsible (along with Saudi Arabia) for the outrageous gas prices on the US and other places, I offer my morally obligated apologies, and what's even worse, that money has always gone to waste here in Venezuela, by both the current government and previous ones.

Oil production is at a 40 year high in this country. We're the closest we've ever been to getting more of our oil domestically than internationally. Anyone who says that gas prices are high for any reason other than the oil companies and blatant speculation is smoking something.

Oil prices are only going to go up anyways. Heh, I was watching an episode of top gear (british version) the other day, and they mentioned that gas was close to twice as much there as it was here. Americans don't know what high fuel prices are.

I'd vote for Obama, again, but he and the Democrats need to stop being such pussies. The Republican policy of the last 4 years has basically been " If we can't run the country, no one can!" and Obama & the Dems have mostly played along. If you even questioned the government under Bush you were accused of helping the terrorists. I'm tired of conservatives getting their way even when they're the minority party. Republicans rammed 2 wars down our throats during the Bush administration, and all we've gotten out of Obama is a change of tone & watered-down healthcare legislation. Legalize gay marriage. End the War on Drugs. Universal healthcare for all. Regulate Wall Street & Corporations (they're not people!). Enact gun control. Do something!

Oh lord don't get me started. This country is in a severe economic depression with a budget that is way through the roof and both candidates refuse to reduce spending. Our military spending is absolutely ridiculous and we've ticked off at least half of the planet the past decade. What we NEEDED was someone who is willing to cut spending, do something about the broken Federal Reserve system, and establish positive relationships with other countries without dwelling on Cold War Syndrome from over 30 years ago.

ALL spending is ridiculous. be it republican or democrat they believe government is the solution, despite the fact that total wealth destruction (taking all the money the "rich" hold, plus a lot of other things) only pays for one fiscal year. That's it. No debt going down. DOD needs cuts, DOE and DOHS need to go.

God bless you man. Finally someone who agrees that bureaucracy is a joke. Spending billions of dollars on these systems has only led to an increased deficit and the slow destruction of the Constitution. Do you think the Constitution was just made up by a group of bozos who were bored at the time? Hell no. It was the result of thousands of years of corrupt Monarchies sitting up on their 1% upper class high horse while 99% of the population suffers.

Seeing this trade of our liberties for false securities while the deficit soars into the trillions makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Whoever is the next president needs to understand the root of the problem and be willing to stick his/her neck out to move us in the right direction. Unfortunately, neither current candidate is willing to do so.

Tax the rich! Trickle-down economics is a lie. Tax rates for the wealthy, corporations, and Wall Street are the lowest they've been in generations. Where's that trickle? Raising taxes on those who can afford it was how we got out of even worse debt situations in the past. Obama should have never allowed the Bush tax cuts to be renewed.

Lol! Mitt Romney is a Mormon. One of their many strange beliefs/practices is the wearing of special underwear that is adorned with holy symbols. It is supposed to supernaturally protect them from "temptation and evil" and many Mormons have credited them with even stopping bullets or knives. Look up "temple garment" on wikipedia.

WRONG! Temple Garments are the white underwear you're supposed to wear when you go to a temple. They're as modest as underwear gets. Whether or not each individual wears them on a daily basis is their own business, but it isn't required, and we don't decorate them with symbols, nor is it considered good luck, or...bullet proof...

    LDS here. Mormon, to you.

In all seriousness though, I think it's time for a third party candidate. There are too many people in this country that vote against the other guy instead of for their candidate. If a relatively centrist third party candidate with enough financial backing to actually get their message out there were to appear, I think they'd have a real chance at winning.

America needs a change in the election process. Both the Democratic and Republican parties have been corrupted by money donated by corporations (now, up to any amount they want) to their campaigns. I believe that the majority of American people are not being fairly represented. We may contribute a vote to who becomes the next president but it's now more about picking the lesser of two evils. We vote because we don't want the other guy to win; otherwise, we're apathetic. Then once the president is in office, our representatives in Congress play Washington politics for four years and spin the revolving door with corporations, and nearly everything we voted for doesn't happen.

Sounds counterproductive, but how about this: We pay them (congress) more (in the millions), establish term limits (4 for reps, 2 for senators), require them and their immediate family members to sell all stocks and have no stake in the market while in office and ban all funding (be it from Exxon or Bill Gates). Funding is provided from a pool that everyone can make donations to, and is split equally to all parties involved.

I give you HARD evidence to your own stupid beliefs, and your response is to attack me and make a low blow shot. Way to take the high road and post a stimulating and well thought out response. Stunning. Guess what? There are over 140,000 pages of rules and regulations laid down by the federal government alone. How ****ed up is that? We can't do ANYTHING and everything is illegal.

Chances are saying this will make things worse but here goes...I tend to avoid political discussion because of comments like these. In fact, I personally feel like this kind of talk is one of the reasons that so little progress is made when debating American politics. It almost always seems to degenerate into people sniping at each other and abandoning the hard political reasoning they seem so passionate about initially in favor of personal attacks and petty squabbles.

Just my personal feelings on the matter...no need to attack me in reply.

This is interesting political commentary on a video gaming site...Interesting. Has anyone considered the fact that between the two parties as of February 29, 2012 they had spent in excess of $250MM this is outside of super pacs. It is speculated that in order for Obama to be reelected he may need to raise up to $1Billion in campaign funds. So, on the one hand we are concerned with the economic environment of the US and on the other hand just to be elected, the bipartisan system will utilize in excess of $1Billions for the purpose of campaigning alone. Pizza is a vegetable and keep cutting social programs. Side note: Only one person can win the election so the hundreds of millions of dollars wasted on failed campaigns went to really good use.

I'll vote for Obama again. This time I will do it with regret, but Romney is completely out of touch (as if 99% of politicians aren't...) and even if Ron Paul stood a snowball's chance (he doesn't) I don't like his (or Santorum's) stance on women's reproductive rights.

The main thing I wish would happen is term limits on the Congress and Senate. The presidential election really means squat compared to those two. It is also my belief that the presidential election elicits significantly more media attention for that very reason.

In the end Id love to see someone in front of a committee of senators/congress people have the balls to put out a very simple question to our government. If your salary, from our taxes, is hundreds of thousands of dollars but the many lobbyists who finance your election campaigns, hook you up with vacations, possible gifts, and even cushy jobs after your political careers are over add up to millions of dollars... who are you really working for? Us, them, or just yourselves?
