Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Tell GR: Great SNES Era Games, Go!

Posted on Tuesday, January 29 @ 19:09:40 Eastern by

It's been a pretty slow week and while that's meant a lot of time for upcoming reviews and preview events, there's not much else going on. The news is slow, prepared, and DIRECT, but I miss new magazine-level excitement. Nothing else in the world spoke to my inner consumer than a book full of brand new gaming information and screaming advertisements.

I loved reading Nintendo Power cover to cover, soaking in as much of the sidescroller maps before my next jaunt in Mega Man X. I remember throwing my controller over Sunset Riders. Turtles In Time was never far away. But that's just one man's experience. I unfortunately didn't have much time with the Genesis while I was growing up.

Thankfully, we have Tell GR for all that. Tell us your favorite SNES/Genesis era games. What memories do you have of those games? My friend and I used to play Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety and he never let me sit on the top bunk while we played.

Great SNES Era Games, Go!

Super Mario RPG... which got me into Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. There's Super Bomberman 2, it was fun trying to throw bombs at your friends. Also, there's Yoshi Island with the crayon and felt pen art which supposedly Miyamoto done to spite the committee that wanted the game to look more like DKC.

Games like Secret of Mana or Gemfire. They were oh-so hard to find back in the day (eBay, Amazon, etc. didn't exist yet). It always felt like a really huge score whenever you or one of your friends were able to get a hold on a copy.

There's too many to mention in a single post and since I'm sure the most popular will be mentioned by others (the Megamans, the Castlevanias, the Final Fights, etc) I'll mention some others:
Actraiser, Axelay, Demon's Crest, Hook, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, the Lufias, Marvel Super Heroes - War of the Gems, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Saturday Night Slam Masters, Sparkster, Super Adventure Island 2, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Super Punchout, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse and two of the greatest games of all time: UN Squadron and Super Mario World.
Plus a ton of great RPGs. Amazing console indeed!.

I am about to give out a million thumbs up.

I feel like this thread is going to be dominated by SNES games (which, I'll admit, were definitely more important in the long run), so I'll throw out Shining Force. Awesome tactical RPG where you star as the main character and hang out with a werewolf named Zylo, a magic flying jellyfish named Domingo, and a dragon named Bleu. And a bunch of other guys. Some ******* is being evil, and it's your job to kill him, his friend, his boss, her boss, and her boss's boss.

And you do. Bolt 3, Mother****ers.

Bolt 3 MFers indeed. Shining Force was great, but I didn't get to play much of it. I remember watching a mid-boss fight at my friends house and thinking "if only I were playing myself, instead of watching"

In speaking of games that are fun to play but boring to watch--Might and Magic series for the PC (the original, not Heroes). Nearer to the end of the SNES era, but whatever.

I would go over to my friend's house, and he would be moving around and loading into this zone and that and fighting orcs and whatnot and it was just the most boring thing ever onscreen. I fell asleep in my chair pretty much guaranteed. Then at one point he wakes me up and he's like "how can you think this is boring? You try."

I start playing, and it's ****ing awesome! I'm casting spells and managing my party and exploring and looting and I turn to him and say, "Holy cow, you're right! This game is WAY more fun to play!"

Only he didn't hear me because he had fallen asleep in his chair.

Jeeze where to start....Mario RPG, Lufia Series, Breath of Fire series, Super Mario World, Yoshis Island, Mario Kart, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Metroid, Earthbound (gonna play it tonight now that I think of it), Contra 3, FF3, Donkey Kong Series, Mega Man X, Legend of Zelda, NBA jam....

Ahh the golden era of RPG's. I owned several of them, most of them were roms.

Genesis: Golden Axe series, Streets of Rage, Sonic series, almost anything on Sonics Ultimate Genesis collection (like phantasy star series, shining force, beyond oasis etc). Double dragon, battle toads, alladin, lion king, street fighter

I suppose I should just stop there but you get the idea lol

This is the only system I never put any hours into. I had gotten a Sega and kind skipped the SNES. I do remember playing TMNT In Time and Donkey Kong at a buddy's house but that's about it. Weren't all SNES games ridiculously hard? I do also remember some racing game where I hover cars crashed super easy.

    Donkey Kong Country 1-3
Super Mario World (my GRANDMA loves this game)
    Yoshi's Island
    Super Mario All-Stars
Kirby Super Star (this one was re-released as Kirby Super Star Ultra on the DS in '08)
    Killer Instinct
    Primal Rage

I was/still am a huge fan of 2D platformers. I remember the graphics in the Donkey Kong Country games were mindblowing when they were released.

Super Mario World and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy were staple games of my childhood, and games that I always played two-player with my Dad. We also rented the Joe and Mac games a lot (especially Joe and Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics). I used to watch Dad play the SNES version of Doom, not because i was too scared to play (quite the contrary, I always loved watching him use the chainsaw on big groups of demons), but because when I was a little kid I hadn't yet grasped the concept of controlling a character from a first-person perspective.

My younger brother had the Toy Story video game when we were younger (for the Sega Genesis). He was maybe six or seven at the time. He loved that movie and the game so much that he actually wrote Pixar a letter telling them how great of a movie and game he thought they were. Someone with the company (I couldn't tell ya who, it's been a long time) actually sent him back a package containing a handwritten response thanking him for the letter, and enclosed a really cool framed and signed picture of Woody and Buzz. It was super super classy.

    True story, yo.

Everything above this comment. Yes even Drathbone's genesis list and even another world (which is way better on Dos port then on the console port, less censorship).

I could cheat and actually put some PC games here but no, I'm gonna keep this Snes titles only. I'll try to promote games that usually went under the radar in the U.S: Soul Blazer, Terranigma, Jaki crush, Seiken Densetsu 3 (or secret of mana 2, only available through roms emulation for U.S players), Dolucky no A.League Soccer and Dolucky no Kusayakiu (The best baseball game ever!), Shin Nekketsu Kouha (or the official sequel to river cuty ransom), Crash 'n the Boys, Downtown Nekketsu Baseball... actually any games by technos japan.

KONAMI and CAPCOM made the SNES the winner. Contra 3, Mega Max X, Super Ghouls & Ghosts...just about everything the SNES did was such a leap over the NES that I'll never forget those games.

Activision was also awesome. Judge Dredd, Mortal Kombat, etc.

Nintendo also had a strong in-house development: Star Fox, Mario World, Super Game Boy, Yoshi's Island.

    SNES blew Genesis away.

Pretty much everything people mentioned here, I'll add in another that I'm surprised is getting no love: Metal Warriors (not Metal marines, also fun though). Remember that gem? You could get in and out of your mecha, hijack another one, and the diversity of mecha/attacks was crazy.

Fuck SNES! I was a Sega fanboy at the ripe age of three, when my parents got me and my brother a Genesis. I never really recovered from being a non-Nintendo kid (I've owned an N64, an NES, and a Wii, but I always preferred Dreamcast and PS). But the wonders of Sonic 2, Vectorman, Comix Zone, Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist, Toe Jam & Earl, and The Ooze were awesome, and made sure I'd love video games for a long time.

Oh, and the Genesis version of Beavis and Butthead pretty much stole 3 months of my life.

The fourth generation (and the fifth, too, come to think of it) was a great time for video games. There was a combinatorial strength of aesthetics, mechanical design and technical competence not seen since. Just to take one example; Super Contra 3 The combinations of music, visuals, speed and design (the game was so hard it makes most 'hard' games today seem silly, but callign it unfair would be libelous) were all right for each other.
