E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Tell GR: Handheld Showdown, Round 1

Posted on Wednesday, August 15 @ 00:31:01 Eastern by

Summer is winding down, so I thought it was a perfect time to look back on the handhelds we've come to know and love. Which one was awesome? Which one sucks? I'm looking for the kind of respectful discussion that usually finished in a playground brawl.

Round 1 sees the Nintendo Game Boy staring down the Sega Game Gear. One was big and required batteries. The other was big and required batteries. One played games in color, the other had purple-ish buttons and Tetris.

Remember, use the thumbs up system to show your support for comments you agree with. Thumbs down people you consider morons. Rating comments helps us decide which are read on the air in this week's episode of GameRevolution Radio. So, which will it be?

Game Boy Vs Game Gear

Game Boy was the first time handheld gaming had really been perfected, with removable cartridges, and multiplayer with the Link Cable (used perhaps most famously with Pokemon). It may not have had color, and could potentially suck down four AA's in a day or two, but the games really carried it.

I admit, I don't have much experience with the Game Gear, or really any experience. What I have heard was that it was a good system, though the games selection waaaasn't quiiiite as good as the Game Boy's. I also heard that its color display made its battery life even worse than the Game Boy. However, I don't really have any experience to back this up, this is all what I heard of the system.

Because I know it better, I choose the Game Boy.

I hated my Game Boy, the screen was crap, very scratchable with no wide angle of view, you couldn't see anything at night nor in daylight, and it was bigger than my TV. So I vote for the Game Gear.

Game Boy Color onwards is a different story though.

I had one of those magnifying glass lights for my Game Boy, so I could play fine at night.

I love my gameboy for pokemon but ill never forget going to my dentist as a kid and while he was working on my mouth I would be playing sonic the hedgehog on a sega game gear.

Best dentist I ever had. Later years he even put a xbox in his waiting room.

My orthodontist back when I lived in Alaska used to have a Dig Dug cabinet in the waiting area, plus one other arcade game but I can't remember what it was. They were both free play, I guess to make it easier to keep the kids distracted while they wait to have their mouth looked at. Eventually he replaced the arcade cabinets with an N64 and a copy of Wave Race.

And I think he replaced THAT with a Gamecube if memory serves.

Oh, and this orthodontist's name? Dr. DeKay.
    I'm not making that up.

I left mine outside once. It got rained on and I eventually found it because my dog had it in her mouth. Still played Pokemon Red like a champ.

This one is tough...I had both as a kid (and still them both to this day). Both systems had a library full of crapware, but I think Game Boy had more gems than the Game Gear had. The Game Gear's colored and backlit screen was amazing though. I think I would lean slightly towards Game Boy though because of Pokemon Red/Blue.

Gameboy. So many great memories with Battletoads, Tetris, Samurai Shodown, Mortal Kombat, and Final Fantasy Adventures.

My best Game Gear game was some shitty Pitfall game.

I never owned a Game Gear, but that doesn't mean I never played one. Like xDUMPWEEDx mentioned, Game Gear had color and backlit screen, which helped out tremendously. I owned a Gameboy, which was my first handheld console and console itself that was my own. It was hard for me getting the light correct. It was when Gameboy Color changed that little bit in 1998 I believe. Still, Gameboy and Gameboy Color didn't have a great as screen as Game Gear. I feel Gameboy was the most popular handheld system at the time, but Game Gear was just as good. This is a tough decision, but I played Gameboy more (obviously, because it was my own). I'm deciding on Gameboy. I played Poke-mon Blue so many times. I also loved trading Poke-mon through the cable link.

I WANTED to prefer Game Gear because of the color and lit screen, but when I played anything with fast action, it got so blurry for whatever reason, I couldn't follow the action at all. I played some Mortal Kombat on it, thinking I'd kick ass because of how hard I had mastered the SNES version, but no, no no no. I got schooled because I couldn't see what the hell was going on.

    Game Boy wins by default.
It was a great handheld, virtually indestructible, came bundled with Tetris, and introduced me to series like Kirby, Wario, and Pokemon. Cheers, old buddy.

Gameboy, no contest in my opinion. My neighbor used to look after me and my brother when we were kids after school, their then grown up children had 2 gameboys a link cable and a decent collection of games. It was almost enough to not want to go home at times, vs tetris can get pretty intense against your brother.

Eventually in the late 90's I got my own game boy colour for one game, pokemon blue. Till silver came out that was the only game I had and I never felt the need for any other games. I dread to think how many hours I spent on those two games. I still own only those two games.

I think a lot of people only had a Pokemon title for Game Boy, but that was enough. Personally, my favorite was Donkey Kong Land, but that was just before Pokemon if my memory serves.

I sold my Gameboy to buy a Gamegear and still consider it a good move. Portable Mortal Kombat or another Mario clone, easy choice.

I loved both about the same probably, but with the way the Game Gear sucked my batteries I ended up getting an attachment to let me plug into the wall making me usually sit near an outlet to play. It didn't end up all that portable after that so my vote is for GameBoy.

I had both, but I played the Game Boy much more than the Game Gear. Even though it was inferior in almost every way, it just had a better games. Thus is the power of the superior library.

Just like Game Boy had Pokemon, PSP had Monster Hunter. Either poor move by Sony's part or a smart one by Nintendo's for getting Monster Hunter 3D.

When I finally saved enough $5's back in the day I got my first Game Boy Pocket, came with Link to the Past and bought Pokemon Blue to play with little brothers Red. Game Gear library hadn't kept up at the time and neither did the Sega Saturns, which was my first console.Even a young kid could see that Sega wasn't doing itself right.

I also had more fun with Wario on Gameboy than I ever had with a Mario game.

Gameboy was living proof that it didn't have to be pretty to be fun.

The Game Gear ate batteries. All of them.
