Tell GR: How Should Nintendo Network Operate On Wii U?

Posted on Tuesday, November 13 @ 21:19:48 Eastern by

Above you'll find a rundown on the Nintendo Network functionalities available on launch day for new Wii U owners. The eShop, Miiverse, TVii, and Wii U Chat functions will all operate over the Nintendo Network, along with multiplayer games, friends lists, and more. Of course, I'm still left wondering if Nintendo really knows what they're doing.

No achievements? All of these existing features added in via patch at launch? Mobile phone support after launch? Does this seem kind of thrown together to anyone else?

This week's episode of GameRevolution Radio is all about Nintendo's Wii U, launching on Sunday, and we want your input on one key feature set: Nintendo Network's online services. What does Nintendo need to include to make the Wii U a successful online console?

Everything feels last minute. It's almost like 6 months ago Nintendo said "oh...ummm...I wonder if we should start thinking about our online infrastructure?"

Fully agree as well. It clearly wasn't ready when they started manufacturing systems hence the day 1 update

Nintendo *should* just try to copy all of the best parts of Xbox Live & PSN including the third-party supported apps. Nintendo *will* probably just throw together a clunky mish-mash of online "capable" apps that look like they belong on the latest LeapFrog. I really wish they would just recognize their weakness here and try to imitate the competition.

I do like that they've got a nice browser, but you're right in that it's not a solution for native Youtube, Netflix, Hulu+ apps.

It should have cross game chat and achievements. Doesn't look like that's happening, though.

Truthfully, what it needs to succeed is a feeling that socializing isn't a pain in the neck and there is a sense of community. I like that everyone will be able to video chat, but I fear that the Wii U will be as isolated as the PS3 was.

How should Nintendo network operate on Wii U? I'll tell you how: through a liberal application of crushing force to the consumers cranium by use of a sledgehammer, cause only by getting thoroughly concussed (brain damage not required but recommended) will anyone ever confuse it with a decent internet functionality.

It all sounds pretty basic, much like what Steam tries to do with Steamworks. I'm not sure asking people their feelings about failing at a part of a game over and over is such a good idea, though, even if they are "unique".

    Whether it be by design,
    or through failing of luck,
When I fail at this jump,
    I stand and exclaim: ****!!!!

Basically, they should just steal Xbox Live and re-skin it as Nintendo Live. Have a Mii marketplace, Nintendo Live Arcade, Nintendo Originals, and maybe even a music service dubbed Nintendo Music.

Did my sarcasm come through, or do I need to clarify that? Ah well, guess I just did.

As long as they bring a hefty chunk of the GameCube library to their online store, I'm sold.

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for this to be worse than Xbox live when the 360 launched. They have had 7 years to copy it yet I think most of us are well aware they will not succeed.

I agree with everyone else. It is time to stop trying to be unique and copy what you know for a fact works extremely well. There is a reason why Xbox LIVE owns the entire multiplayer landscape...it works incredibly well.
