Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Tell GR: How Would You Run Electronic Arts?

Posted on Monday, October 15 @ 17:32:04 Eastern by

When I woke up this morning and found that several members of the Electronic Arts forums were ready to burn the mother f***er down over a $20 credit that was abused by the gaming public all weekend, I died a little inside. Did you know that Electronic Arts has control over some of the most beloved IPs in the world?

I started to think about all the good they could do with classsic franchises like Syndicate (X-COM: Enemy Unknown opened the door for more strategy games!) or new favorites like Mirror's Edge. How are they ever gonna publish another game if they're constantly screwing the pooch in the Origin store?

I kept thinking about how current releases from the house Madden built could be different if I were the CEO... But enough about me, this is Tell GameRevolution. This is about you! Tell us....

How would you run Electronic Arts?

Let all the companies I bought make their own games and leave them alone
All sports titles would be yearly dlcs unless I upgrade the game engine
    Sue Zynga every quarter
Sell Origin to Steam, apologize for its creation by recording a video of me doing something painful to myself similar to Jackass
    Revamp some old popular IPs
Buy a pony.... **** it Im rich and I want to own a pony
No mandatory online single player play or drms
Get drunk/stoned on a 3 day weekend, eat the pony.

can't really say they are doing a bad job considering they are still turning a pretty damn nice profit. At least form the games they publish.

kinda hard to get the profit if people actually not buying their games.

kinda hard to get people to buy their games if people really hate them.

So, I have to say they are doing pretty well.

About the only thing I'd change is integrate tabbed browser into the main panel of Origin and let Battlelog launch on there.

Be sure it's actually a tabbed browser, because even Valve are having a hard time getting that across their skulls.

The only thing I don't like about them, but no idea how it would be changed, is that they charge tax (in Canada) on their origin purchases. Since I'm pretty sure that charging people extra and claiming as tax is illegal, I doubt EA is really putting it in there to squeeze some extra pennies out of us.

I would of run it... exactly the same as it is doing right now. They are doing incredibly well despite the hate on the online community. Their stocks still soar high compared to other lesser gaming publishers while still keeping an adequate salaries among their multi-diverse employee. Many times they were awarded best employers of the year by labor ethnics and by G.L.A.A.D.
Now if you are asking me how i would cater to the whiners online who don't know a lick about business but want their precious games intact, that's another story.

Ok now if we are talking about a EVIL company who treat their employee like crap while catering to their rich consumers like Dow Chemical... ok I'll stop here...

I personally don't find EA that bad, now Capcom on the other had. I would have then stop their on disc DLC, stop trying to westernize games, and stop them trolling the megaman fanbase. Those are the first that comes to mind for them.

No more DRM, Axe dlcs and go back to expansion development. Sell digitally on every platform and! the point of digital distribution is you are saving money on fuel and materials in shipping. Even EAs boxed games dont come with discs they just come with download codes. Not shipping boxs around would save fuel and instead of collecting up all those profits like a bunch of greedie mofos I would give online buyers at least half of saved profits, from not using fuel or material, in a price discount.

Currently EA keeps all the savings from online distribution

I'd change the name to Tiny's Electronic Arts. I'd then hire OdiousLupous and Sourdeez to run the place. Oh and I would make 213EDD V.P. of Trolling.

For Christ sake the first thing I would do is announce Mirror's Edge 2 even though it isn't in development and apologize for screwing the game industry over.

Uh...Invest in several mediocre MMO's that gain an intial subsriber base, then go F2P and cop out to the loyal followers in turn for a couple dollars. Also, invest several million dollars to the failing PAC supporting a prominant presidential candidate (figure it out, otherwise please don't vote).

Let the teams EA has swallowed through the years work independently and as freely as possible.

First, I would stop using market projections, as these have proven to be ineffective. You cannot predict what gamers want by charts and sales figures, because gamers are unpredictable. Then, I would refocus efforts into cheaper but just as fun games, because big-budget games while fun, are not necessary for a good experience. Marketing could be scaled back, because the internet is a great marketing tool that can be utilized for little to no cost. TV ads are not necessary to market a game, a banner here, an E3 Presentation, and general word of mouth is good enough, look at Minecraft or other games that have done well without being marketed on TV, or other places. Slowly, I would trickle developer made creations back into their hands. I would let the developers determine what to release, on their time schedule, because frankly, developers know better than publishers what gamers want.

Get into the hardware business and make all my IPs exclusive to that hardware. Works for apple.

How i feel EA runs as a company.
    Objectives:
    1. make money.
    2. buy up companies, make money off of success of developer/publisher
    2. A) slowly destroy developer/publisher by firing all the staff except the head developers/programmers/CEO etc
    2. B) steal/use ideas from newly bought developer/publisher company and clam them as your own ideas.
    2. C) any game series already created before the buyout, will be completely altered from the original game series. (ie - Westwood, command and conquer series before genereals. or bioware before and after the buyout.)
    2. D) if one of EA developers/publishers come out with a game and EA has NOT spammed their name all over the game title. game title becomes a hit, sequel is made, spam EA logos everywhere and tell the world "WE" made this game.
3.make a program like steam to sell games, but have no sells on games.
    4. continue making any sports game. (endless wiping of a dead horse).

How i feel EA should be run.
    Objectives:
    1. earn back the respect EA once had over the industry.
    1. A) no more 'x' limit on the amount of times you are allowed to install the game.
1.B) allow more then one user name be tied to a CD key.
1.C) stop trying to be steam. (make your own waves).
1.D) allow (if possible) games to modded and not have you banned.
    2. Let the developers finish their game in a timely matter, and not rushed. patches and DLC's should add to the game, and not finish completing the game. (ie - Mass Affect 3. just about every Battlefield game, ST:KOTOR - MMO).
3.actually make a new sports game, and not repaint last years "x" sports game and resell it for next year.
    4. stop with the no blood/gore policy. (ie - Battlefield series).
    5. stop buying/selling/trading developers/publishers like theyre hockey cards.
5.A) allow newly bought developer/publisher to do their work. having a 100% complete game on launch gives off a lot of good impressions.

Well, presumably if i was choosing how EA was run i would be the CEO, yes?
If so, i would run it EXACTLY HOW IT'S BEING RUN.

Screw you guys, i'd increase my salary and continue to let my company screw over the gaming world.

Then, once the gaming industry is ruined, i'd move to Madster Island and live in my mansion for the rest of my life.
