Tell GR: Is The Last of Us Getting Overhyped?

Posted on Friday, February 17 @ 15:06:33 Eastern by
Right now, we're susceptible to being blindsighted by the prospect of an original IP like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, because last year's catalog was dominated by sequels. Awesome sequels, but sequels nonetheless. And trust me, video game editors almost automatically love new IPs just to get us out of the rut of annualized franchises.

But perhaps an original IP isn't as original as we might imagine it might be. I know full well not to get on the hype train until I've seen actual gameplay footage or, better yet, hands-on time with a game. I'm still excited about the title, but seeing does not equal experiencing. That said, the same goes for the below image which, though brutally honest about the situation, is based on seeing screenshots and trailers.

So, is The Last of Us being overhyped? How original is it really?

At this point there had better be some sort of new, original, ground-breaking gameplay mechanic or feature. Otherwise, The Last of Us is starting to look like a strong future contender for Most Disappointing Game.

The Last of Us deserves all the hype that can be offered based purely on the strength of the last three titles the developer put out.

Don't know why you're getting thumbs downed.... an uptick with Uncharted, further positive marks with Uncharted 2, and then a leveling out with Uncharted 3.

He's getting thumbs down because modern gamers are man-children with the emotional stability of the Mad Hatter, who hate anything popular. That being said, I agree with sliverstorm.

I don't really care how over hyped it is. I've been a fan of naughty dogs' games since crash bandicoot, so I'll pick it up cause they make good games. I get games because they sound good or interesting to me, not because of the hype machine.

Personally, I'm not getting the hype. The damn thing is year away yet and I'm already sick of hearing about it. It'll probably end up being a very good game, but right now I just don't care. I've got lots of other games that I can actually play right now to keep me occupied, I don't need to keep hearing about one that I can't play yet.

I've lost all interest in Diablo III for the same reason. I was all excited just like everyone else when it was announced, but now I doubt I'll even bother buying it. I've already reached to point where I just don't care and it hasn't even even been released yet.

I have actually heard relatively little hype but from what I've seen I am excited for this. I need to get back into getting psyched for new games.

The problem isn't the setting (post-apocalypse), enemies (zombies), or character cliche (bonding), it's that these characteristics are used to try and sell sub-par games. It's not that I don't want these tropes, it is that I want them done well; not used as a crutch.
