Tell GR: Over-Hyped? What Do?

Posted on Wednesday, July 18 @ 17:26:26 Eastern by

The Dark Knight Rises is just over 24 hours away for those of us excited enough to leave the comfort of our homes at midnight and sit in the dark until 3 AM. Normally, I try not to buy into the hype. As a critic, it's kind of the key to being objective.

But this is a movie we're talking about and fuck it, I am in full-hype mode now. So much so that I think it's time to calm down and take things one step at a time.

Normally, I try to play the movie down in my head, hoping, desperately, to avoid over-excitement and consequently, disappointment. Maybe I'll read the opening lines of a negative review or distract myself with something completely unrelated. So, today I've got two questions for you:

Are you excited for Batman?
How are you dealing with the wait?

I think the hype is well-deserved. The Dark Knight is one of the best films of the last decade and not only is this a sequel, it's the last of a trilogy.

Except for his batman voice makes me want to shoot myself, joker lying about his "scars" hurts my heart and bane being a normal looking douche. I still don't see what is so good about this batman however I will go see it.

It sounds like your beef is less with the quality of the movie and more with the lore being altered

Well, let's hope CGI is used to make Bane, Bane! Nolan was able to make effects for Scarecrow's bio-chemicals.

I am super excited for Batman...in general, I love most things that come from Nolan.

I'm dealing with the wait by trying to stay oblivious. Nothing ruins a movie more than seeing all the scenes before hand.

Yeah definitely. I'm struggling not to go too in depth. It's so close, it should be easy to avoid any unnecessary spoilers.

You guys may know that I actually don't like movies based on superheroes, but this... this I am super ****ing hyped over. I've always loved the Batman movies, and with the Arkham games, my love for Batman has only increased. This being the close to the trilogy, and after Heath Ledger's performance in the last one, I couldn't be more excited.

not a huge batman fan. I did like Arkham City but its sad that so much detail and care went into that game for batman. If only we could get that quality without it being batman.

In fact now that I think about it I dont really "like" most superheroes. Spider man is meh, superman is boring, Batman is hohum. Thor is ridiculously silly to watch and not in a good way. Iron man is ok when hes not a douche. The Hulk and Xaviar I guess are the two I like the most.

Cause I live in NZ it came out last night, and the local cinema screened all three films back to back, which was well worth the effort I must say.

I was . . . disappointed, but not awfully. It's a great film, but there were a few plot directions I found hard to believe, Bane isn't as good a villain as he should have been, and Gordon-Levitt didn't have the same impact as Harvey Dent in DK. On the plus side, I thought they nailed the ending, and for my money, Catwoman actually worked in this film.

I'm a huge Batman fan, and while I am excited to see the movie the waiting never seems to bother me. I'll probably even wait a week or two to see it so that I don't have to deal with the crowds. Movies & games I can be patient for, it's waiting years for book & tv series to continue/finish that goddamn pisses me off.

I hate crowded theaters so I'm catching a sunday matinée, in Imax. I keep seeing mini reviews in headlines and it pisses me off. I don't want to hear if people loved it or hated it. I just wanna see the movie. Normally I wouldn't go on opening weekend I'm just sick of avoiding spoilers.

Is it an IMAX digital theater or film theater? I got some e-mails trying to impress me on the difference between the two.

Not sure. Might be digital. Don't care that much. Film or digital, if it's in Imax it'll be good enough for me. There over an hour of Imax footage. Will be awesome regardless.

Sorry for the late entry and not reading every comment, but I'm not sure how this film would turn out, because Heath Ledger's role for The Joker was that amazing. I have speculation about the film, because there's too many unanswered questions. I just recently watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I never actually watch Batman Begins. Ra's al Ghul, did he he die in the film. Sure he the train explodes, but he could have escaped if you use film logic. Also, I noticed they're called League of Shadows in the film. Correct me if I'm wrong, but are they supposed to be called :League of Assassins?

Anyways, I'm hype for the film. I enjoy Batman. I may not have read every Batman comic, but I know my fair share of the stories. I'm going to see this film on Tuesday. Can't see it Friday, because of work. One thing I would like to see is Bane with Osito. Don't know why a little kid Bane with Osito amuses me. Most likely, because he served prison time, because of his dad. Anyways, can't wait.

Most of the disappointment comes from the hype around it. It seems from the reviews that if it's not as good as The Dark Knight, then it's sewer waste. I don't agree, but also don't think it will be as good as the other two.

I am psyched, but I am not sure when I can go to see it. I have been hitting midnight showings for the super hero movies, but this one is the longest yet, so I don't think I can make it. :(

I don't think I'll be able to see it for at least another week. While I think Christopher Nolan is a phenomenal director (Memento literally redefined film narrative), I don't have the time to go to a midnight premiere, or have the time to squeeze it into my weekend.

I'm gonna see it next week or maybe on Sunday. Going camping this weekend instead of hitting the midnight release. I'm really excited. I'm not expecting it to be as good as TDK though. I'm still expecting it to be a great close to the trilogy. I think it will be like how Star Wars 5 was amazing for me and 6 was still awesome and had an amazing ending but won't be as amazing as 5 was. I also have some theories about the ending but I don't want to ruin it for someone if they want to go into the movie knowing nothing.

Speaking of that I think the site could benefit from DUMBLEDORE DIES tags for the comments and forums.

Have you seen The Amazing Spider-man? I enjoyed it more than the latest Batman movies, and probably more than this one as I don't see it been different.

What I'm hyped for is The Expendables 2.

For me TDK is overrated, and let's not talk about Heath Ledger's Joker...

I've read a couple reviews that more or less confirmed my suspicions. The movie is good, but it's a bit longer than it needs to be and Bane doesn't hold up when compared to Ledger's Joker. I'm still going to go see it on Saturday, but I've lowered my expectations.

I really think the Batman *gruff tough guy voice* is overkill, and it's REALLY annoying at that. The suit makes him look like a walking tank.

I just think the whole thing is too grounded in reality and SERIOUSNESSNESSNESS. He doesn't even have Batman's slight sense of humor.

I'm excited. I started a new job this month so this Monday when a co-worker asked me if I was going to see Batman I realized that was this week. I've seen every Batman film (even the Schumachers) in the theatres. I'm excited, but I'm a cynic so I never try to go into anything expecting more than the base minimum at best. I'll be going this Sunday most likely.

My wife's favorite ::FAVORITE:: Batman movie is Batman and Robin. Second place is Dark Knight. I facepalm just thinking about it.

Batman and Robin was the last movie I saw with my dad. Even as a 9 year old I wasn't thrilled. I still bought the 4 part 90s Blu Ray boxed set when it came out.
