Tell GR: PlayStation or Nintendo 64?

Posted on Tuesday, February 26 @ 18:00:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

With all of this next-gen talk taking over the interwebs, we figured we'd mix things up this week and kick it old school. So we've decided to fire up another heated platform debate, this time between Sony's first foray into the world of gaming and Nintendo's third console.

It's a really close fight between the two, but as far as I'm concerned, the only right answer is the Nintendo 64. You want to know why I feel that way? Well then you're going to have to watch my video response above.

Of course, I expect all of you PlayStation fans to tear me apart in the comments below—in fact, I welcome it. The PSone was an incredible piece of hardware that did wonders for Sony... It's just not as good as the Nintendo 64.

Which console from the late 90s reigns supreme... The original PlayStation or the Nintendo 64?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the PlayStation didn't have Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Pokemon Snap, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye, Banjo-Tooie, Smash Bros., Mario Golf & Tennis, Excitebike 64, Blast Corps, 1080, PilotWings 64 and Sin & Punishment. You'll survive.

It's this and the Final Fantasies vs. Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Mario Kart 64 for me. Ughhhh, both so good...

And then later on in life I played all these other awesome Playstation titles like SotN and FF:T and Vagrant Story.

But probably N64 for the stronger nostalgia.

Both systems were awesome. I owned a 64 but played a bunch of ps1 games on ps2 (final fantasies, chrono cross, mgs). Nintendo hands down had better first party support. I wrote my above comment from the perspective of my grade 8 self.

As much as I am a playstation guy now, it was all about N64 back then for me, probably the last nintendo console I really enjoyed and played a lot. Moved on Sony side after the N64 and plan to stay that way, except for the zelda and mario games.

    Nintendo 64.
If I could go back I'd play more PSone since I haven't had the chance to play all those Final Fantasy and Metal Gear games... but that didn't interest me in that time, now I'd be all over it.

I loved them both, but N64 all the way for me. There were so many groundbreaking titles back then, but it just had more of them. I absolutely hated the controller on that thing though.

Never played much PS but I loved the hell out of my N64. Funny thing about it is I bought it in about 2005. The awesome thing about that was the games were cheap and I had the entire library at my disposal for purchase. Favourite game? Gauntlet: Legends.

Playstation all the way. The absolute quickest way to get me to lose interest in a game is to include the word "Mario" in the title. I've never been a fan of Nintendo's exclusives and that hasn't changed.

Very understandable. Even though most main Mario games are of high quality, Nintendo doesn't offer much variety between console generations and the only really successful Nintendo franchises now are the ones they've been clinging on to for more than two decades now.

    Bring on the down thumbs!

2 controller ports, vs 4 controller ports.

4 player goldeneye, mario kart, mario party, smash bros. N64 had zelda for single-player, and an awesome catalog for multiplayer. Never played PS at other peoples house, not enough fun to go around.

Playstation all the way. Had a much better controller and discs were much than cartridges. PS1 also had Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, plus the original Tony Hawks were better on Playstation. N64 had alot of good games, but overall Playstation was where it was at for me.

I beat it twice that Christmas night and still continued to play it over and over again for years.

I had both. I have more of a nostalgia tilt towards the N64, but in hindsight I feel it was the weaker console.

It spelled the downward spiral of the Gamecube due to poor 3rd party support, whereas the PS1 spelled Sony's uprising with the PS2.

I remember back on the 64 thinking the sports games were so fast lol what i loved to do the most on one of the NBA games was to trade players and simulate the entire season to see how good of a general manager i was.

On PlayStation i remember connecting two consoles together to battle my dad or friends at Command and Conquer Red Alert Retaliation.

For me i really can't pick one over the other.

I got the N64 when I was nine years old, joint Christmas present for my two older brothers and I.

Like any kid into video games, having both would have been awesome, but we chose the N64 'cuz before that we pretty much had all Nintendo - the orginal NES, a SNES and Gameboys.

    I didn't get a Sony console until I was sixteen (a PS2).

Both were good, but the Playstation had far more to offer.

I mean, when you're talking N64 games, the ones that always come up are the seven main Rare games, Mario 64, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart 64, the Zelda games, Star Fox, and maybe a half dozen others. While those are all fantastic games, that's about all there was to offer.

In about every genre bar FPS (which had Medal of Honor and nothing else), the PSX matches or outweighs its competition. RPG it ran away with four amazing Final Fantasy games, Vagrant Story, and Chrono Cross. With platformers it had the Crash trilogy, the Spyro trilogy, Ape Escape, Klonoa, and several other less important series. Not to mention the complete breakthroughs in action sub-genres such as Survival Horror (with Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, and more) and Stealth Action (Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, and Tenchu). And that's just scratching the surface, since there is hardly enough room to list everything it offers (and I'm out of room.)

While it almost always comes down to what game console you played as a child and thus have more nostalgia for, from a purely numbers standpoint the PS1 had over six times the amount of games as then N64's entire library. While most of those games were pretty bad, it's still hard to ignore that fact. And it's hardly a quality vs quantity argument, since most of the games matched the quality of games on the other system. The PSX just had a lot more.

Though I think that when looking back on the consoles, that works more in the N64's favor, since most everyone played the same games on it, so the collective memory of it is much sharper.

N64 had a few things going for it, and they were the line of WWF games (No Mercy in particular), Perfect Dark, 007, and Conker's. The one thing these had in common is insanely awesome multiplayer. My friends and I would play literally all night, and the N64 made that easy because of the standard 4 controller ports.

However, when I wasn't with my friends, it was Playstation all the way. I played through MGS and the Final Fantasies several times each. I wasted days of my life racing around in Need for Speed (unlocking the T-Rex was the greatest thing that happened to me for a day and a half), playing Cool Boarders 2, JetMoto, THPS (which took a long time to port to N64), MDK 1 & 2, Resident Evil 2 & 3 (the former being my favorite game, period), Parasite Eve, Medal of Honor, and dozens of others. Nintendo couldn't compare. I saved up all summer to get an N64 because my friends all had one. After six months it started to collect dust and I traded it to buy more PS games.

I'm kinda torn. The PS1 had most of the mature games, but the N64 was so weird that it became the face of nostalgia second only to the SNES. I wasn't too fond of the frequent blowjobs though...

I owned both. First the PS1 and when it died I had an N64 and missed my PS1. Both are good honest. The PS1 had more "adult" games like Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, and GTA. The N64 had better adventures such as Zelda, Mario and other games. The PS1 was able to have actual movies and pre-rendered cut scenes on the disc so the games looked much better as well.

When comparing the two, cleary the PS1 was the better machine. Although when you think back to those days, the N64 stands out more. I believe this is due to us combining the PS1 and PS2 into one system. As many sequels from the PS1 transfered to the PS2. N64 had some great games, but it was the PS1 that started serious console game with mature themes.
After everything, I wrote, I still say PS1, but only due to the fact that I am a fanboy.

Tell me what games on the N64 started there and then went on to bigger and better systems. The PS1 games were original IP's that are remade today because of how huge they were then.

Just the Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, but I don't think that counts. There wasn't even a Metroid game for the N64! When it comes to third party....probably non. The N64 was the last great Nintendo console in my mind (home console anyways)

PS1 for me. It came down to the N64 having Mario games, WCW Revenge, Harvest Moon, and Perfect Dark, versus the PS having a ton of Final Fantasy, Tekken, WipEout, the better Bomberman games, Xenogears, two Breath of Fire games, Wild ARMs, Grand Theft Auto (I had the original!), Suikoden, Metal Gear Solid, Spyro, Croc, Tomb Raider, IQ, Valkyrie Profile, Einhander, Unholy War, Future Cop, Parasite Eve, Tenchu, SaGa Frontier, Tales, and I'm sure a boatload that I'm missing.

Also, as someone whose budget was really tight back then, I liked being able to pick up demo discs with a copy of OPM! That made experimenting really easy and my purchase decisions often came with more confidence. Oh, and on that same note, games were cheaper on PS. The budget line of 64 games was $40, but that was the usual new game price on the 'Station.

No real reason, except I want to brag about a few of us community members. We got together and raced in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to see who would become adult Link first (Love Zelda games, calls Link Zelda... RAGE!) Sadly, I came out last. Playing that game as long as I did makes you want to Hulk smash the cartridge. Please stay tuned as Festival-Temple edits the video and post our fun in the near future.

I'm a little older, so I feel less nostalgic about this era of games than the 16 bit, so I don't feel the same about the PS1 and N64 as I do about the SNES (My all time favorite console). I had both, and played some of my favourite games of all time, but as much as I loved the N64, I don't feel like going back and revisiting any of those games, sure, Mario, Starfox and Zelda were great, but I didn't enjoy those games as much as I enjoyed them on the SNES, and the N64 had the glaring omission of a metroid title. Now, the PS1 had MGS, R-type delta, Resident Evil 2, Castlevania SotN, Wild 9, Alundra and Bushido blade, which are all games I regularly go back and play. So as much as I love Nintendo, I think the PS1 edges this one for me.

PS1 for me. I wasnt able to get a 64 until I was in high school. Plus it didn't have Mega Man X4 which i was completely obsessed with. Also Silent hill and MGS pretty much changed the way I looked at video games forever. I loved the 64 as well mainly for zelda, mario, starfox, golden eye, and killer instinct gold. My fingers still have the muscle memory of a 36 hit killer combo with T.J. Combo imbedded in their cells. I still gotta go with PS1 for the amount of alone time we spent together though.

Both systems are classics in my mind. I owned an N64 from Day one and the launch games from that system are some of the best memories of my teenage years playing games, from Mario 64 to Pilotwings to Waverace and Shadows of the Empire, and those were just the first wave games. Never had much interest in the PS1 when it first came out, but started working at a small video store in my grade 12 year and a few specific games coming in that I knew I had to try (the original Silent Hill, and Final Fantasy VII and VIII), so rented the system from the shop one weekend and went out and bought one the next week. Overall though, gotta give my vote to the N64, just because for me there was so much hype for it when it came out. And don't even get my started on Goldeneye though. If there was ever a game that could sell a system, for me, that might've been it at the time. Still one of the greatest games of my life so far!

Republican vs Democrat, Christan vs Catholic, Horde vs Alliance....THIS IS going to be a never ending battle. Its all about what you owned as a kid. PSX or N64. Those that were spoiled brats and had both, are in between. I will go with PS1 even though I both. Like people said...I've never played a game as AMAZING as Metal Gear Solid. YES....Ocarina of Time is in top 5 games of all time...but PS1 also had Final Fantasy 7. I easily poured over 200hrs of game time into that game. Some of my best memories were with my PS1. Street Fighter vs X-man anybody? I mean...N64 had great games...GREAT NINTENDO games but PS1 had a buffet of great games to chose from. No matter what kind of gamer you were.

I like to coexist with the current console generation, because most games are multi-console nowadays.

I agree with a lot of people's tipping point coming down to the multiplayer. The more I think about it, the N64 truly is one of the greatest consoles of all time for 4 player games, and was truly designed for it right outta the box. Like I said above, Goldeneye remains to this day the most played and most enjoyed multiplayer game of my youth, played it every single day for a few years and never got old, only got better. But then add in all of the Mario Party games, Mariokart 64 which I'm still playing with my buddies 4 player split screen now on the Wii's virtual console, even some mid-pack games that aren't as well known nowadays as some of the big boys, such as Battletanx, the San Francisco Rush games, and the WWE games.

ungh tough question, my friends all had the PS so I bought the 64 cause we needed some variety. Needless to say we all spent most of our time at my house playing Perfect Dark than the PS. This was the only Nintendo product I ever owned. It was a love hate relationship, but the 64 will always have a special place in my heart
