LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Everything I Learned About Call of Duty: Ghosts Last Week
I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

DAILY MANIFESTO

Tell GR: Redesign? Redesign. Rate it.

Posted on Tuesday, August 21 @ 20:00:00 Eastern by

GameRevolution has seen quite a few different looks over the years. The demolition derby car, the red background, the black background, Bolt, Atomic, ealier this week, now.... The list continues into the future, but we'll leave upcoming changes for another day.

Today, we want to ask you what you think about the site as it is this week and what you want to see in the future. You don't have to tell us to bring back the black background. We already heard that. We want your opinions, but I'm a little deaf from all the shouting. Here's what we're looking for:

  • Rate the redesign on a scale from 1 to 10.
  • Tell us whether the redesign is better or worse than the previous look.
  • Tell us one thing you like about the new look.
  • Tell us one thing you think needs to be fixed or changed.

Remember to rate your fellow revolutionaries' comments with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. The highest rated and most notable comments will be featured on GameRevolution Radio later this week. What's more, I'll be sending swag out to highly rated Tell GR commenters from now on, so get to it.

Do you like the GR redesign?

I like the new look. The buttons could just use a little work making them a little faster and available in the rest of the forum(you can see them at the front page of forums) The buttons also need better shading.

Man I miss the GR car. Id rate the redesign a 8. And to just be a dick ill give you a 10 if you made a layout of only the GR car. :)

Agreed, the car was iconic to me when first coming to this site. All in all I also would say 8, 8.5

I second (third?) the car, bring back the car!
Initial thoughts on the site though, solid b to b+, great job guys.

I like the banners (ribbons?) across entries telling me what I'm looking at. This was present...I think...previously but it's now more obvious. I definitely like the hadouken comment counter image.

I can't say I like how prominent the Transformers are right now, though I love Transformers, and this is from someone running adblock, ghostery, etc. I do understand you dudes need to get paid.

Aside from a black background, all I've asked for is comment notifications. I would love to see some modern iteration of the DD car.

Michael Jordan is the GOAT, but Kobe isn't too far behind.

Wait, am I in the wrong section?

Oh, okay. Yeah they should totally remake Final Fantasy VII. It's the GOAT.

Ah crud I think my house is on fire. Be back later.

I think the redesign is pretty good, I'd rate it about a 7. I've seen some redesigns for sites that were so radical that I actually don't visit them anymore, but I think this one, visually, is an all-around improvement while keeping the structure familiar. I think automatically loading more stories as one scrolls down the main page is a neat feature, and the top bar is pretty useful. As for bad, the games pages devoted to each console are kind of a let-down. Just a list of titles is pretty bare-bones, although with reviews and previews moved to their own pages, not sure what I'd do to cover it up.

No, no words. No words to describe it. Poetry! They should have sent a poet!

Oh wait, I am a poet. Ahem:

    Shiny new front page
Still can't say **** in comments
    Otherwise happy

I'd give the updated site an 8/10, with the previous site being a 7/10. Definitely a step in the right direction. It looks cleaner and sleeker all-around. I do miss how the front page headlines were previously differentiated by color (red for Manifesto, Tell GR, Podcast, etc. and black for News, Previews, Reviews, etc.). It made it easier to scan at a glance for new articles/posts and it caused the more GR-centric (red font) ones to stand out more.

7/10, for my uses probably a bit better. Love the auto-refresh on scroll (though I don't often seek out older articles), love the "latest" updates that appear on scroll for each header, love that my sign in/personalized stuff has its own section, and love the larger article previews. Hate that I have to wait two seconds for the first header scroll to unravel (Just appear and disappear, damn you! This is genuinely annoying and unnecessary), hate that the links to actual segments are stuffed in the bottom right in tiny font identical to google ads, hate that I can only see two articles without scrolling when I load the main page on my 1920x1080 monitor.

Of course, I've been using the new design for all of 20 minutes so far. I'm sure there are more perks yet to discover.

Also, the Transformers back splash actually looks REALLY freaking nice. I can't believe I'm saying that about an ad, but the color palette fits in very well, and you integrated the UI elements around and within it in a natural, non-intrusive way. Kudos on that--I might actually miss it when it's gone.

When I first saw the site change, right there I noticed the new navigation system. It's great to be to hover on over a tab and have a drop menu. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the forums link, which use quite off. So, hopefully it would get at link of its own in a tab instead of being placed in community tab. I also love the new PMing layout. Receive a new PM and you'll see a number above you -e-envelope. The pictures for the article I think may be a bit bigger than what it should be which. Those are my biggest complaints and credibility. Also, why are the comments a fireball icon? That makes no sense to me. Overall, I'll rate this a 7/10, because it was a change in layout, but not much was actually given. Love it though, it's indeed "sexier" as someone left.

Dang. I was reading each comment to see if someone gave it a letter grade. I will add mine here.

Looks good, but nothing really changed to make it original.

I don't like the banners on the topic thumbnails, they obscure. Also they're kinda like cheap coupon cut-off corners.

I've been lurking here since the old demolition derby car days (off topic, anyone know what Duke is doing these days?). I hated the previous design change (no offense) I even took a little break over it. But I love the new design. It's sleek, easy to read, and just plain looks good. I give it an 8. The only issue I have had is that the featured video player on the right won't close when I hit the little X. I need to refresh the page. I'm using firefox 14.0.1

The new look is stylish with minimal slow down. The bigger icons and drop downs have a good balance of content vs. clutter. The abstract for articles on the front page is too much; I find myself skipping articles that are not as relevant to me since I just read the synapse. 8/10

Yeah definitely like the new design. If I could suggest one thing it would be to switch up the scrolling headlines more. The top headlines are always the same but you have new (and especially interesting) articles all the time, swap out the scrolling headlines for more recent topics more. Just my 2 cents.

It's pretty good. The new design looks cleaner and better organized than the old one. And I like that the front page has a longer list of most recent posts, whereas the old design cut the list off at way too few posts.

Something I've noticed occasionally is that the front page banner for an article doesn't update very fast when new comments have been made. I saw this problem in the old build also, but not very often, and it seemed to iron itself out in time. I've now seen it several times this morning, and I've only been here for about half-an-hour, so it appears this problem has made a come-back.

You guys have so many ads that when I paused adblocker, white boxes popped up everywhere and finally my screen was consumed by what seems to be a transformer/T-Rex. That is all. Chrome BTW.

Id say a 8.5 without ads.

As I previously mentioned, it needs widescreen support. I don't think you can even buy a non-widescreen monitor anymore.

the tabs at the top (games, news, features, cheats, etc.) are too slow to reveal the drop down window when you hover over them. small complaint but it would be nice if it was instantaneous or at least much faster. on the whole 8/10

A minor thing I would change is that Read More link below the Vox Populi section up there in the ribbon's Community area, I would instead put a link to the Blogs section, like with Forum or Member reviews links.
