Tell GR: Should There Be More Watchmen?

Posted on Wednesday, February 1 @ 17:09:34 Eastern by

I know there are plenty of you who keep an eye on the graphic storytelling scene, so I've got quite the conundrum for you to piece out in your mind. I love the original books by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, but my question for you today is if the likes of Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, and J Michael Straczynski will be able to muster up what's needed for faithful, worthy prequels of everyone's favorite flawed superheroes. So my question for you is...

Who watches the Watchmen and who will be reading the prequels from DC Comics?

Brian Azzarello is a fantastic crime writer (probably the best choice for Rorschach), JMS pretty much single-handedly resurrected the entire Thor mythos, and Darwyn Cooke is a very clever choice for a Watchmen prequel, but... Watchmen was such a full and complete experience by itself. Moore and Gibbons are probably the most famous writer/artist duo in the history of comics--I would argue that only Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely come close to their collaborative ability to convey rich, full, juicy concepts in every panel.

I'm sure there's money to be made, and I'm sure at least the Rorschach comics will be a fun romp, but I really don't think there will be anything of value added to the story that wasn't covered more efficiently and elegantly by the original work.

...to be a pompous jackass about it.

Moore and Gibbons I thought long ago wanted a prequel to the comics but during the Minutemen timeline not the Watchmen. Since Moore doesnt want any part of it Im steering clear of it.

The Watchmen (the graphic novel), and movie, are some of my favorite things of all time. I love them, but they are not relevant in society today. None of the issues, social climate or references have anything to do with modern times. It won't be the same...

That being said! HELL YES, BRING THE WATCHMEN ON!

It's like if one day they looked at Star Wars and said "Well, those were awesome. Let's make a prequel series for MORE MONEY!" That's the perfect comparison to this.

No. I just see them ruining a great series with this.

If you're a great writer than go make up something new.

Prequels? Eh. I'd take a prequel game. The combat in the End is Nigh was pretty solid.

I'll be reading them. These are some very talented writers and pencilers. The Watchmen universe is open for more stories, and since these are prequels (thankfully not sequels) I think they'll fit in perfectly.

As long as it stays a prequel, and fully in line with established canon, I could be fine with it.
Jumping off from the end of the novel would be disastrous, the future should be left as ambiguous as the ending was.

Though being a purist, I'd rather see them leave the franchise alone. The movie was already pretty risky with changing some (integral) parts of the story, I don't see how a spin-off/prequel will improve upon this classic.

More Watchmen? Bleh. Only if they manage to make it more relevant to today than the original is. Even for its day, the original had some pretty silly and dated ideas. (We would have won the Vietnam war if only we'd been more vicious? Puhleeese.) Now it's so badly dated that it's a chore to read. Making more of it so that it fits in with today's society would be doable but tricky, and I wouldn't bet the farm that they could manage it.
