E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Tell GR: SNES or Sega Genesis?

Posted on Wednesday, May 9 @ 13:00:00 Eastern by

Forget the Xbox 360 or PS3. I don't care about the Wii or the Vita. I want to know, once and for all, who has the best console, Sega or Nintendo? Let's settle the original console war, here and now.

Which is the better console: SNES or Genesis?

Bonus Points: Argue like you're still in elementary school.

Very cool Versus photoshop, Daniel. I was an SNES guy all the way, though I did play my Genesis mostly for fighting and sports games. The one multiplatform game I stuck to Genesis with was Mortal Kombat, because of the blood code. But for MKII, it was SNES for the 4-on-4 matches.

I always thought Sega's ad campaign was incredibly dickish. Seriously, acting like they had the more manly console? Of all the stupid things. They were still only video games, Sega. At least Nintendo tended to focus on how great their games were, instead of tearing down the other guy. Aside from that, though, both had good games. I had a SNES, and my nearest friend had a Genesis, and we played each as the mood struck us.

Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
    Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK!

I agree with Billy. SNES wins this round.

My family was a sega family starting with the master system so I'd have to say genesis since I never had a snes. Clearly we see what systems game series have continued on successfully while poor sonics name keeps being dragged through the mud with terrible, terrible games

Sega had Phantasy Star but......SNES RPG's blew those away.

I made a friend in 6th grade just to play this game. When I beat it I never saw him again hehe. Phantasy Star was great.

I had both and I loved both, but I probably had 5 times as many games for the SNES. I can't remember people arguing about which console was better back then like they do now. I don't think it started until the 5th generation (N64/PS1/Saturn), and was probably fueled by the internet and rise of video game journalism.

Lol, I remember people arguing that it was the best ("Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter are so good, man!"). I view a lot of the console wars arguments as people just trying to justify their purchases to themselves.

Now that I think about SNES did had a lot of third party support back then. FFIII, Chrono Trigger, Super Bomberman 2, Mega Man X, Super Mario RPG (Square developed that one I think), etc. Plus, the usual first party games like Super Mario World 1 and 2, DKC, Mario Kart, etc. Funny how things changed.

SNES. To be honest I always saw the Genesis as competition to the NES and even then, the NES had better games. The SNES was in a different league.

SNES, easily hands down, just a massive library of exceptional games, with one exception, robocop vs terminator for the genesis was far superior to it's SNES counterpart

SNES. It's not about how thick your controller is, it's about what you play with it.

SNES has an amazing game catalogue. Genesis had MK with blood, Moonwalker and that X-Men game.

For me, both are equal in quality, because, even though a mediocre SNES game looked and sounded better than a mediocre Genesis game, when it comes to the masterpieces, both consoles are equal in strength, Sonic 3, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Gunstar Heroes, and the list goes on and on.

As a kid in the mid nineties when I first got it, the Genesis. A couple years later when I got my SNES, I would have to say ultimately the SNES wins. Mega Man games, Final Fantasy 6, and Chrono Trigger are games I will remember for the rest of my gaming life.

I did not own the SNES but Turtles in Time was badass.

I did own the Sega Genesis. I think the Genesis had better games. Dune, Mortal Kombat, Generals Chaos, Sonic, Road Rash, Skitching, Ecco, Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Toejam & Earl, and Jungle Strike games all were a blast.

I also owned the 32x that plugged into the top to get some DOOM action going.

I still own most of those games and are in a box right now gaining value. (Along with my bigger NES collection.)

You can get Earthworm Jim on SNES too, although I think the second stage in EWJ2 in the SNES version is different to the Genesis version

    Tough call...

SNES had Donkey Kong Country games and the Super Mario World games; Sega had...well, pretty much everything else I played as a kid.

I'm gonna stay neutral on this one.

I was a Genesis kid, but it's impossible to deny the incredible SNES catalog. When I go back to play 16-bit games now, I know which ones I'm usually craving.

I've never been a Nintendo fan, so I had the Genesis. I even had the 32x, which let me play the hell out of Virtua Fighter. I used to kick so much ass as Durel.

Street fighter series, super metroid, donkey kong country gotta go with Snes, but can't say i have no love for the genesis as Mk (with blood), eternal champions, and sonic were some of my favorites. And of all the cheats the debug code for sonic 1 cannot be forgotten. Up C, down C, left C, right C, A start. Seems so simple yet try it on a genesis controller.

Snes: Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong series, Super Metroid, Mega Man X series, Final Fantasy series, King of Dragons, NBA Jam...

Mega Drive: Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Castle of Illusion, Buster's Hidden Treasure, Phantasy Star series, Shining Force, Golden Axe...

Tough call, I guess the Snes was a more all around console but you'd be a fool to dismiss the Genesis altogether.

Kinda like the Playstation was superior at it's time, but you'd have to be a fool to dismiss the N64 altogether.

The secret in any era of the console wars is to own both major consoles.

When I was 12 years old I got a SNES for christmas with Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Starwing and Zelda a Link to the past. That was hands down the best christmas ever and those are some of my favorite games ever. SNES hands down, best console ever.

SNES was the better console. I was a Genesis owner, but I still played SNES at other peoples' houses. MKII was VASTLY superior on SNES.

SNES was a better console but the 32X attachment was very underrated and gave the genesis some amazing games.

As a kid I would've said the SNES, but now I tend to lean more toward my lovable Genny. I don't have a good reason why, I just enjoy my Genesis games more overall at the moment. I tend to waffle between the two.

I never had an SNES. I wish I did. I had a Sega. All the good RPGs were on SNES. So my first RPG was Rings of Power...

I never owned a Genesis or Master System. I did borrow my dad's friend's genesis and remember loving MK, Desert Strike, and Sonic 2.

I stick with SNES as the best if only for the superiority of (nearly) all the games that started with "Super."

SNES was one of the few Nintendo systems I never owned but I did own many of Segas early consoles. I played Alf the game on the master system, hitting government agents with a salami.
