Tell GR: What Are Your PlayStation Memories?

Posted on Wednesday, February 20 @ 21:30:00 Eastern by

Did people get this excited for the Wii U? There seems to be something about the possible leap in technology in unannounced console hardware that just drives people wild. At least, that's what I assume is the catalyst for the #PlayStationMemories tag that's taken Twitter by storm in the past 24 hours.

Among the nostalgic tweeters is Anthony_Severino, who's waiting in line outside of tonight's PlayStation event RIGHT NOW! (Not really, it's cold, but maybe soon!) Here are a few of the GR Staff's PlayStation Memories:

What are your PlayStation Memories?

The load screen for the first time. The pleasant soft tones and bright, high-contrast colors. If I remember it right the first game I ever played was either a copy of Crash Bandicoot or the demo disc (number five, if I remember right) and seeing it all as it was for the first time...it was a wonderful experience.

Accidentally renting Silent Hill instead of Syphon Filter because I forgot the name. That was a huge mistake, never been so scared in my life. Also, my sister smashing an oreo cookie in the PS1 disc tray...had to just toss the thing. Was stuck with an N64 until I got my PS2 in 2003.

Second memory, trying to figure out how to copy PS1 discs that I rented. I tried copying with a dual burner and it didn't work. Like an idiot I tried this several times until I realized you have to chip the consoles.

Yes, over here chipping was as popular as Lady Gaga, both with the PS1 and PS2. Sony must have found it curious how almost no games where being sold to a population that owned maybe a million consoles.

You can actually do that with a lot of older PC game CDs like Quake, its sequels, as long as it isn't a DVD. I sometimes go by pawn shops to find old PC games just for their soundtrack, like Quake 2 or Redneck Rampage, or something like Shadow Warrior.

I remember watching my bro play Resident Evil. I liked to watch since I was too scared to play. I remember that first zombie you discover eating a corpse then he looks at you and starts chasing you, freaky! :)

Similar memory when my sister bought RE4 for PS2. We pre-ordered the collector's edition. When the first zombie came out of the shack in the forest area after getting out of the car. She threw the controller down and told me to play it while she watched. She was too scared. My game now!

When I was in school, my friends and me would gather on a Friday-Saturday night, and mostly play Winning Eleven on a PS2 doing 2vs2 matches until dawn of the next day. We were like 8 people, and the winners would usually sleep in beds whereas the biggest losers would have to take the couch or floor. And the winners got more pizza. Oh happy days.

Playing the original Twisted Metal game at the store near my house. While everyone was crowding the N64 to play Mario 64, I was having running over people with that Green Monster truck.

Yeah, when someone forgot to turn the TV down before turning it off. I learned to never boot up the PS2 before turning the TV on.

For PS2 memories? I have a sad that I have shared on a post a while back. My dad promised to buy me a PS2 if I babysat my two bratty sisters for a whole summer. We got to buy one and he buys a used PS2 thinking he's saving $100 when it was only $20. The guy at Funcoland (before it was GameStop) tried telling him the PS2 just dropped to $200 that week and he's only saving $20, by dad wouldn't believe it. So after that he forces me to buy a PS1 game (Syphon Filter 3) instead of buying a PS2 game at the same price. I ran out crying and had to borrow some friends games until I could buy a PS2 game.

Traded in stuff like Clay Fighter, Donkey Kong Country, and Batman Returns (which as an adult I've repurchased because it was a huge mistake) on the SNES for Gex, Destruction Derby, & Road Rash. My stepdad wouldn't tell me whether I was getting the PS1 or not, but made me trade some SNES games in for PS1 games and made me sweat it out until my birthday.

Bad memory is playing The Bouncer on PS2 after all the pre-launch hype. Such a let down.

Battle Arena Toshinden and Ridge Racer on Christmas eve first 2 playstion games. House full of good smells from prepping for a big Christmas dinner and under the tree the PS1. It was my red rider bb gun that year. Oh how I reminisce of racing that damn black or white super car that you needed a perfect run to beat on Ridge Racer and the introduction of 8 way movement in a console fighter...was all about MK and Street Fighter prior to on SNES.

Buying FF7 and not having a memory card yet. Man that was a rough 2 weeks. I played the first couple hours of the game so many times.

Also bought Brave Fencer Musashi instead of Symphony of the Night. Never played SOTN til a couple years ago when I got it on XBLA.

First picking up a controller at a friends house to play the original Resident Evil wayyyy back in 1996. Then in summer of 2002 getting my PS2 and booting up Metal Gear Solid 2 only to have my jaw hit the floor and stay there and waste a entire summer playing MGS 2, Red Faction, and raiding my local Blockbuster to rent two or three games at a time. That moment will always be forever remembered to me. I worked so hard to get that PS2, and when I finally got it home and hooked it up I knew it was mine, and couldn't wait for the long hours of playing. I also remember marathon sessions of Grand Theft Auto 3 I had the day of my birthday(when I got it) and well into the night. We didn't do any missions, just drove around and caused mayhem. Ahh the memories. Still hear that PS2 jingle in mind...

Grandma got me a Playstation for Christmas in 1998. Got me three games: a BMX racing game, Rayman, and MediEvil. I'm not a big fan of racing games, but the BMX game I got was pretty fun. I'm a big fan of platformers and Rayman holds a special place in my heart.

I spent weeks and weeks playing Medievil. When I wasn't playing it, my grandpa was. I think he liked that game even more than I did. When grandma bought the system, none of us knew that you needed a memory card to save your game though, so we didn't have one for the longest time. Grandpa got tired of having to start the game over every time he played, so he was actually the one who went and bought one for us. After we filled that one up, he went and bought another one.

    Good times and fond memories.

The first time I encountered the T-Rex in the first Tomb Raider game. Perhaps the raptors running wild and free earlier in the level should have given me a big hint, but the thing is/was, the first TR game was just so marvellous that I didn't pick up their warning :) Happy Days.

I played the Ps1 first time at a cousin's home while in vacation. I played a demo disc that had Crash Bandicoot, King of Fighters and Tekken 2 on it. We later rented Tekken 2 at the local store and I spent a full hour trying to defeat Kazuya who's so easy today.

Later on in the same day I went to another cousin's house and we played Resident Evil 2. Took one of the biggest scares of my life when the zombies invaded that gun shop, couldn´t play not short after that and was blow away by the CGI of the Licker "dropping by".

Awesome, awesome stuff. Made my N64 look so wimpy. The only reason the Ps2 is better is backward compatability. :)
