LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Tell GR: What Do You Do When Gaming Gets Boring?

Posted on Tuesday, January 15 @ 17:54:20 Eastern by

Sitting around for hours and hours a day might seem appealing to some people. Kicking back, cracking the cellophane on a new game, and losing sight of 5 or 6 hours is awesome. Of course, when the 5 or 6 hours is up, I don't know if I can continue. Sure, I've had the occasional marathon, but sometimes gaming just gets boring.

When that happens, I have to do other stuff. Even occasionally, an alternative activity can cause your brain to think all sorts of new and interesting thoughts. Now, if you'll just answer our question in the comments below, I've gotta go play some video games.

What do you do when gaming gets boring?

Drink. Read a book. Take a walk. Read the news. Watch something stupid on the internet.

    Orrrrrrrr Drink.

I watch TV and try to hang out with friends. Hey, there's #game-revolution.com we can chat in. I have a guitar and I fool around with it whenever inspiration comes. Fooling around with it eventually taught me how to play it. I'm still learning my guitar and different techniques. Sometimes, I even take the initiative and watch other people play video games. Just recently there was a speed-run marathon to help raise money for a cancer research foundation. Watching people do that was quite fascinating.

I highly recommend taking lessons, even if you only go in like 5 times. I'm not saying you're bad at playing guitar, but if you're self taught, chances are you're doing something wrong. Lessons just give you a good foundation that makes progression a lot quicker, since there are a lot of things that can brick wall you if you're just figuring them out yourself.

Considering how important video games are to me, I surprisingly don't play that often. I'm usually reading, writing and recording music, or just generally dicking around with something. Like I overclocked a PS1 a while ago and it doesn't really make much of a noticeable difference, but it's still kind of cool that you can do it so easily.

I'm in a couple bands so those keep me busy, I've been playing guitar and singing for about 15 years. I love books about atheism, evolution, and biographies. I also drink and take drugs occasionally, preferably ecstasy and LSD. That and work, school, living with my gf and taking care of my 2 dogs, is pretty much my life.

    I don't understand the question.

At this point in my life, video games are what I do with what free personal time I have. This has had the unintended perk of making what time I am able to spend playing incredibly fun and engaging.

It has also made me a picky son of a ***** about what games are worth my time and completely broken me out of my completionist mindset. Platinum trophies are a young man's game...

Well in games like MMOs or when im replaying a old game and im at a monotonous part I usually run a tv show or movie in a window(always on top option) or on my cellphone resting on my keyboard.

I find some Russian stuff (newspaper articles, recipes, etc.) and translate them to learn new words.

Date, listen to music, go for a drive, go to class, do homework, go swingdancing, read, work... videogames are basically my filler when nothing's going on.

It's Western Swingdancing, specifically. Basically you dance to country music, throwing girls around and whatnot. I'm definitely not a country guy, but it's tons of fun. I went a bit too crazy recently and ended up dislocating my shoulder, so I've been easing back into it for the past couple of months.

Watch Netflix and Amazon (there are 3-4 day periods sometimes where my PS3 may as well just be a Roku), go places when I can, write stuff (mostly about baseball, as I can kill a great deal of time writing and looking at box scores), walk my dog when I'm at my parents'

I suppose homework figures in there somewhere, but that is something I usually procrastinate on until the night before it's due.

My non game time is usually spent maintaining order between my 3 and 6 year old. I also read comics, draw, and hang out with friends on the weekends. I also play pen and paper rpgs every now and then. I check out youtube for the Let's Play and other game playthroughs. I am the only gamer in my household so every once in awhile, it's nice to see the story of a game unfold without me have to do all the work.

Judging by the amount of comments posted by Ugh and Dump I'm guessing gaming GOT boring.
As for me: watch movies, read the newspaper or a book, listen to music, TV on DVD binges and internet surfing mostly to read about games and to catch up with wrestling.

Sad fact: a quick search for the word sex in the comments yielded zero hits. Is anyone getting laid?

As a simple matter of politeness in mixed company, perhaps the various commentators prefer not to discuss the more intimate details of their private lives? Anonymity changes the context and the rules for pleasant discourse change with it. However, I think it would still be inappropriate as this is a family-friendly site.

The best part about this ridiculously long thread is that Dan is going to have to go through it all for the up votes for The People Speak! Tee hee!

Yeah, but I kinda feel bad for Alex. Alex is the host of this week's podcast. I warned Alex though.

Just to let you know, blame DUMPWEED for this. His comment "Troll GR" was the main cause of this. He started thumbing down people, so I came to the rescue. I tweeted him "I'm watching you." This later turned in a plan to get over 1,000 heat I think we've succeeded!

No idea what you are talking about. I was just doing what the article said to do, which is Tell GR.

This is now the new high point in Daniel's transition into a super detached, ultra jaded game reviewer.

For me, playing games is a hobby. I rarely need a hobby to distract me from my hobbies.
