Tell GR: What Would Make A Good Video Game Reality TV Show?

Posted on Wednesday, February 22 @ 16:34:02 Eastern by
Another Reddit discussion entitled "The best/classiest way to make a reality show based around game design" has spurred on many comments on whether Redditor MagePower124's suggestions (picture below) are even good.

The idea of following Top Chef/Project Runway (I will also add Face Off) is a step in the right direction. I can see Sara Notachenny, Felicia Day, or Jennifer Chobot as the host. While I think Tim Schafer would be a fine addition to the judging panel, I would also like to see someone like Gabe Newell and at least one professor reviewer; perhaps, Ben "Croshaw" Yahtzee since he develops games as well. (Oh, I mean, one of us from Game Revolution.)

Half naked super-models trying to actually be good at video games. bottom score and or person who drops last place more without taking advantage of practice time gets catapulted.

I stopped reading after your intro, for i find the idea of a new reality tv show repulsive. Especially about making a game.
However it could work really well if it was a streamed show from a devoted gaming website or publishing company, as the viewers would be people who actually cared, not the dumb masses that are glued to tv sets, numbed by the constant brainwashing flow of advertising and meaningless crap intended as a diversion from real life by the various broadcasting stations.

It wouldn't work, even if it's about games. Reality shows (which is one if the most misleading discriptions for a genre I've ever heard) are never, ever about what they actually proclaim to be about. It always boils down to drama, which is usually written in (how the f*ck can you write reality?) to stir sh*t up. He said this, she did that, they ate my cat for breakfast and painted my white shoes orange... It's all bullsh*t.

Cool idea, but I worry that super-tight deadlines would absolutely burn people out relatively quickly. The strength of top chef and project runway is that they have a fairly standardized product (dress, food) that can be produced consistently in a standard amount of time (2 days, 4 hours) and judged consistently on a standard set of criteria (fit, taste). The show can then riff off that core with themes and constraints.

It would be hard as **** to judge a game developing competition in a way that is appealing to the viewer without placing a premium on execution over concept. Otherwise, I worry the show would become more like Work of Art: The Next Great Artist which is basically completely ****ing inscrutable.

An alternative might be the Food Network Challenge structure, where a few teams compete in a winner-takes-all competition. All the creative is done ahead of time, and is then gradually revealed to the viewer over the course of the competition, which is primarily execution.

Did anybody watch the live humble indie guys make a game? It was incredibly boring. I watched it for like 2 seconds. I'm pretty sure even a production team couldn't make a game developing reality show exciting.

Camera sweeps in on blue screen of death, "OH SHIT MY COMPUTER CRASHED" *dramatic music, fade to black, commercial break*

    No thanks.

You can't really make a video game in a week like they would have to for a video game making contest and then only a small percentage of people would tune in unless they were developing the type of game they liked such as FPS, Fighting, Puzzle, etc.
