Tell GR: What's The Best Game Of 2012 (So Far)?

Posted on Tuesday, July 24 @ 18:32:57 Eastern by

This week, we're in record high temperatures, Anthony's house is about to be blown over, and Nick? Where the hell is Nick? Things are falling apart at The GameRevolution Compound! With 2012 being the year of the end of the world and the people of the Earth of this universe, we might be able to crown a Game of the Year!

That's why I'm thinking back on all the games that have come and gone so far. Which has been the best? Obviously Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier are contenders, but I haven't evangelized either of those as I did Journey. I also didn't rate them as highly. But we tell you what we think all the time, now tell us:

What's the best game of 2012 (so far)?

yeah where's the love for this game? maybe not Game of the Year (i say that purely based on the lack of interest y'all seem to be showing) but definitely a worthy contender.

    Agreed. Amazing campaign.

My only beef was the multiplayer character progress being a GRIND FEST. Gang wars is cool, but it gets repetitive when your character develops at a snails pace

Another game I'm dying to try out but I lack the funds to buy it even with the steam sale that went on. I'm ok with throwing 5 dollars away but 30 I feel uneasy still.

I probably enjoyed Mass Effect 3 the most. You know, great singleplayer and great multiplayer. There are some games coming out soon with 2 at the end of their titles that I think will be better though.

I would vote Journey for sheer ingenuity and style...... but it was too short.

But fundamentally, I have to side with you and vote for Mass Effect 3 for kick-ass gameplay and the multiplayer was well executed creating a HUGE amount of replay value.

It's ironic. I thought the Multiplayer of ME3 Would be it's downfall but it turned out to be it's biggest strength. Odd Duck it is.

Diablo 3 is the one that has given me the most play value.

That said, Dota 2 and Guild Wars 2 are going to destroy it for me.

It's basically an old school dungeon crawler. The Game brought me back into my old D&D days. It's really a blast the puzzles are well thought out and the pace is great. It was like 5 dollars during the steam sale I think the normal price is 15 bucks which is still a great price considering the amount play you can get out of it.

I played the demo a bit I want to jump on something and stab it in the face. All they need a giant gauntlet type of weapon so I punch a dragon in the face. For some that seems very rewarding.

So looking through the games I've played this year the only one that actually came out this year is Botanicula so I guess it gets my vote by default, though it an amazing game so it might have gotten my vote even if I had played everything to come out.

For me it's Ghost Recon, admittedly the multiplayer wasn't quite engaging enough to tear me away from battlefield (possibly because i could never find a full server or the game breaking lag wound me up too much), but the single player was great! Something that can't be said for most shooters! I think i played it through 3 times in the first week of owning it, loved the synchronised headshots.

I'm sorry, but I'd have to disagree with putting "Amalur" on anything. It felt like that game mixed too much of others and not enough originality. That, and it just wasn't very fun.

Dragon's Dogma, even though I haven't beaten it yet. ME3 in second, it was absolutely fantastic up until you meet the starchild on the Citadel. Starhawk gets my vote for biggest letdown, it tried some cool things but I couldn't get into it like I did with Warhawk.

Dragon's Dogma and Mass Effect 3. I have put more hours into ME3 though as when you pick up the multiplayer after not having played for a few months it becomes addicting again if only for a few weeks to get some solid new characters. But the randomness of the packs is the most frustrating aspect. Playing for hours only to get a pack with upgrades to two ultra rare guns you don't use hurts a lot.

From the psychological perspective they do that for a reason. It sucks understanding what they are doing yet still wanting to play. See -
In operant conditioning, a variable-ration schedule is a schedule of reinforcement where a response is reinforced after an unpredictable number of responses. This schedule creates a high steady rate of responding. Gambling and lottery games are good examples of a reward based on a variable ratio schedule.

I don't think I've actually played anything from THIS year, but the newest games I have are Skyrim, ME3, MW3, AC:R, and the Silent Hill 360 ports. I still enjoy the first three (as well as buttloads of Fallout New Vegas still) but Silent Hill did not age well, and I'm not enjoying them nearly as much as I did 10 years ago. I quit playing about halfway through Silent Hill 2.

Totally understandable. ME2 and ME3 were slated for Fall and then subsequently pushed back to early in the following year.
