Tell GR: What's The Most Under-Appreciated Game Of 2012?

Posted on Tuesday, December 18 @ 18:06:18 Eastern by

Awards week is off to a very busy start today. With the first two days behind us, we're readying for the heavyweights, including the best platform exclusives and the crowning achievements: Community Choice and GameRevolution's 2012 Game of the Year.

Still, as is true every year, some games will fall through the cracks. When they do, you're there to pick them up and evangelize them across the internet. That's what we're asking you to do here, now.

What's the most under-appreciated game of 2012?

Don't forget to rate your fellow commenters so we know which to feature on GameRevolution Radio.

I'm not sure this i what you are asking for, but Diablo 3. As much hate as that game got I put 200+ hours into and a game has to be doing something right to keep me compelled for that long.

    I wish GR had edit.

Also, not a game but the Vita. I've grown very tired of people saying that the system doesn't have any games, is to expensive, memory cards are expensive, etc.

Right now I have 18 Vita games and 4 PSP games waiting to be fired up anytime. Genres range from racing, sports, JRPG, open world, platforming, FPS's, action, adventure, dungeon crawler, fighter, dual stick shooter, shump. There is literally something for everyone.

You can buy a $250 bundle with a game and a memory card, or a $300 bundle with six games and a memory card. And the system has the potential to last for 5-6 years. I buy a new phone every year for $200-300 and so do a lot of other people. It's not that expensive in comparison.

The same goes for memory, all proprietary memory is expensive. You can get $32 gigs for $80. Which is about $2.50 per gig. Apple charges $6-10 per gig.

Totally agreed. I've seen to many Memes and parody videos jeering at diablo 3 like it was the game of the anti-christ (irony?). It's really unfair.

I'd have to go with Lollipop Chainsaw. It was ridiculed for having a big-titted objectified lead, but the game flipped that around by *literally* objectifying Nick, turning him into barely more than a fashion accessory. Brilliant. Add to that the very fun combat and several laugh-out-loud moments and you get a really great game. Haters be damned.

I gotta say Sleeping Dogs. That game got very little coverage, but is one of my favorite games of the year. While Spec Ops (pictured above) didn't sell all that well, and initial reviews didn't really "get it", I feel like enough people have come to understand its meta nature that it's not really all that under appreciated.

I feel like 2012 has been a year of gamers complaining about games, so all of them? Notably Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3. Whatever gripes anyone has with them, millions of people still had a blast.

I really only spent substantial time with D3 and Spec Ops this year. I'd say D3 was overhyped (and overhated) and Spec Ops should have been an instant "how do we make a sequel" type of game.

Where would you like to see Spec Ops go in a second game? Following the same character?

It doesn't need any of the same characters to make me happy. It wouldn't even have to follow the same setting. I would buy a Revolutionary War "Heart of Darkness" or a Civil War, or WWI, or WWII, or whatthehellever if the overall writing, emotions, twists, etc. were present.

They could always set the sequel in the STALKER mythos. It would tie up the innumerable plot holes rather nicely and open a path of redemption for Walker while allowing the developers to do a hard orthogonal turn away from the style of The Line. A more open-ended game in which the player enjoys full agency at all moments is one where The Line's indictment could actually stick, but only if the player goes that way. They could use Strelok as a voice box to discuss and explore the obvious failures in realism in The Line (too many to list, All Were Thematically Revolting has the straight dope, search for Spec Ops Maginot and it should be one of the top results) with a sort of QA format. I am enjoying this idea way too much. We're talking fan-fiction levels of enjoyment here...not good.

    Mount and Blade: Napoleonic Wars
It's a multiplayer DLC with muskets, cavalry, artillery, and musicians that came out this year with barely a ripple in the ocean. Pretty much a first person Napoleon: Total War.

I would have to say Dragon's Dogma mainly because of some bad textures/models and the lip sync issue, but what it lacks in prettiness it makes up for in combat and I enjoyed the story. Plus the companion system is different from other games.

My other two are To The Moon and Faster Than Light, but I just think that thes two games are for a smaller audience than a Call of Duty, or Diablo 3.

To The Moon lacks in real gameplay and it's rather short (around 2-4 hours I believe), but in those few hours it tells one of the best stories of love in a videogame (Plus a few funny and sad moments too). it's the type of game that the story really sticks to you.

And finally Faster Than Light. Now Idk about Faster Than Light other than I can sometimes be playing for hours on end and not even realize it which what I think makes a great game. Plus the feeling of having your ship on the brink of destruction hoping that your missiles charge before the enemies is left me on edge a few times.

    TLDR?
    Dragon's Dogma
    To The Moon
    FTL: Faster Than Light

Resident Evil 6. Based on the complaints I bought it expecting it to suck hard but I loved it. I think if it was the first game in a new franchise people would have been a lot more open to it, people just have the memories of the first few REs in their mind when they play a new RE and get pissy the more it deviates from them.

    Final Fantasy Theatrhythm

Every other game was just about what I expected, received acclaim, or was disappointing. However, Theatrhythm has taken up about 20 hours of my life and I can't see myself ever growing tired of it.

I haven't played FTL but that comment could be why it's not appreciated. Not everyone enjoys games with a punishing difficulty, and in a rogue like, it's kind of standard.

I would also Dragon's Dogma. It's a game that starts off on the wrong foot but gets better as it goes along. Given the standard human reaction, the game is therefore underrated.

Without spoiling anything really, the story is interesting in how it plays out. Death himself isn't a hero, he doesn't want to be, and never will be. He doesn't save the realm because he cares, he saves it because it is required to save his brother. His quest to save his brother means he has to fight the Corruption that plagues the Realms, and I think that turns some people off. He never plays the hero in fact Death is a snarky, arrogant jerk for the entire game, there isn't ever any moment of revelation or face-turn. He never becomes the hero by choice. He has no sympathy for anyone or anything, but he does have loyalty to his brothers (and sister.)

This man speaks the truth. I think the problem is that it's a sequel to a game that really wasn't that good. If it weren't for the review here on GR, I probably wouldn't have bothered playing it, and I would have missed out on one of the best games of the year.

Mark of the Ninja was a great game, fairly simple but it executed everything perfectly (pun intended). I put about 20 hours in & it's the first game I've ever got every achievement in.

Sleeping Dogs was great too, my personal GOTY. Considering how bad the True Crime games were, this was a huge improvement.

I was gonna say mass effect 3, but it got the GR RPG game of the year award therefore i am happy...

...I WILL nominate, however, Diablo 3. I strongly believe that the 5 page essays on why the diablo 2 fanboys who wrote it hates the loot system (cept me apparently) and the online DRM has greatly discourage many gamers from enjoying this gosh darn great game. How sad i was when i saw Daniel nods at the commenters under the "what's your biggest disappointment" front page topic after he pointed out he never played the game and had no opinion till then. I ain't saying he's a fool, just that i wish he tried the game first and get his opinion on the matter beforehand.

And now, here i am playing diablo 3 with my closest friends... that i wish were GR people.... sigh...
