E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

DAILY MANIFESTO

Tell GR: What's The Worst Game You Ever Bought?

Posted on Tuesday, February 12 @ 18:52:04 Eastern by

Today, Gearbox Software and Sega released Aliens: Colonial Marines to the masses. While GameRevolution's review copy arrived yesterday, it's clear that fans eager to step into Ridley Scott's scifi-horror universe have reason to be disappointed.

Movies don't necessarily encourage watchers to buy their tickets in advance. Television is pumped into your home after you pay the bill, but I don't know if it's fair to compare it to video games. Why do we consumers hand over our cash before the product arrives? Why do we buy games sight unseen.

Sure, there are plenty of trailers, but so few games get demos anymore (and that's the best way to see if you'll like a game, hands-down). Anyway, it got me thinking, the worst game I ever bought without previous knowledge would have to be Animaniacs for the Game Boy. What about you?

Without demos, how do you know what games to buy? Do you wait for reviews before picking up your preorder?

What's the worst game you ever bought and immediately regretted?

Enter the Matrix. With my friend, right after we saw the movie in theaters. Pretty much a bad Max Payne with random melee that took button inputs and dropped them into a Plinko machine. Marketing completely owned my child brain.

Everyone is making me feel like I'm nuts. We're talking about the same game, right? Developed by Shiny Entertainment for the PS2 era? You play as Niobe/Ghost and basically skirt around the main plot of the movies? I don't remember any hacking, and definitely don't remember a versus mode...

You probably didn't give the game a chance, lol. Was very good at the time. and you had hack to get the versus mode. Nice implementation of using cheat codes and the like. You could also access a lot of other features, very cool. Actually "hacking" was a lot more fun then looking up the codes online.

I got Fugitive Hunter (PS2) as a Christmas gift as part of a package with an Onimusha game (obviously the real prize) years ago. It was a low-budget first person shooter that had you killing terrorists. I only played for 20 minutes, but what caused me to turn off the game was a spoken line that was something like, "I got to get more health." (along with bad gameplay, of course)

Apparently the game contained a scene where you got in a fistfight with Osama bin Laden. The game was released in 2003, a time when we were particularly stupid about our definition of patriotism.

For me it was Battlefield 3 on the 360. I only bought it because a bunch of my friends also have 360's, we were all in the military and we thought it would be kind of cool to be on a team. What I got was an N64 game running at unplayable framerates on a console that can't even process the game properly, so what should have been a 64 player strategic war over huge maps was neutered into a Call of Duty corridor shooter. I haven't played the PC version since I generally don't play multiplayer games without friends, and my friends and I play Arma now, but I'm sure there's no way it's anything like the 360 version. That game was awful. I sold it to a used game store for 5 bucks and I felt like I was ripping them off.

The worst part is, the first thing I did when I bought the game is install the texture pack. When I got into the game I figured it must not have worked because the textures were barely discernable, so just as a test I went back to the dashboard and deleted it. I got back in the game and was completely mind-bottled to find it looked even worse.

BF3, without any of the DLC, just the texture pack and updates, takes up 10 gigs of my 20 gig hard drive. Whoever thought of the "texture pack" idea, and requiring that many large updates to run a game should be fired.

I absolutely LOVE the first Mercenaries game. After I found out they were making a sequel, I was giddy with excitement. I picked it up on the day of release, played for less than a week, and got so irritated and bored that I traded it in. Not the worst game I've ever bought, but it was such a disappointment.

Fun fact: Mercenaries 2 (at least the 360 version) has some weird glitch that can sometimes cause it to automatically unlock all the single player achievements for absolutely no reason. I traded the game in the day after it happened to me since I no longer had reason to play it.

Star Trek: New Worlds. It was supposed to be Star Trek meets StarCraft or Total Annihilation, so I went out to Software Etc. and bought it the day it came out. It ended up being the absolute worst RTS I've ever played and a game that seemed like it was never even finished. It looked like total crap, there was no save function, the controls were awful, and the gameplay speed was slow as hell.

I don't really buy 'bad' games exactly, because i've always been the kind of person to look at reviews. I did however buy Resident Evil Outbreak which was pretty terrible, but I mostly just have a tendancy to buy games I was never going to like just because the scores were good. Bayonetta is one, at the time that was the weirdest game I'd played (I played nothing but shooters back then, very American games), plus i'm not huge on hack'n'slash, so I've always thought that game was horrible, despite being named one of the 'best action games ever made' by critics. I might buy Silent Hill Downpour, I'm sure that would count as the worst I've bought

I've been put in an awkward position because I was fully aware that platinum games made bayonetta, and then found out that they were the ones developing mgs rising, a spin off of my favourite series. I really don't know what to think, but the rising demo is pretty awesome

I've been meaning to download it, but at first I was terrified. It doesn't look anything like what's in my MGS comfort zone, which may be a good thing. I guess we'll find out.

that is, in no way, a good thing. But i decided not to care about how rising turns out or what kind of game it is since i discovered MGS ground zeroes is metal gear, top-to-bottom.

Good point, but the excruciating wait...

And I say it could be a good thing because I don't ever want MGS to start feeling stale. Although I see Kojima as the God of Weirdly Amazing Stories, I don't ever want to boot up a new MGS only to find it hard to be absorbed in the same old song and dance, however unlikely it is. So, I'll give Rising a chance, and hack 'n slash my way through large robots and Raiden's annoying voice.

I actually love Raidens voice! I never really hated Raiden anyway, but i just think Quinton Flynn does such a good job. I'm worried that understanding the story in Ground Zeroes will require knowing everything about potable ops and peace walker since I haven't finished either (I can't beat the second Peace Walker battle by myself! I hate the Peace Walker boss fights, the ONLY thing wrong with the entire series in my eyes! Including the stuff about MGS2 that everyone else hated)

For me, it's been daksiders 2 for the 360. Maybe I just have bad luck, but the game is completely riddled with glitches that have rendered it unplayable. That, and the dialogue just seems rediculously cheesy from what I have gotten to play

Ha, I got the game for the PC, and I put it on the back-burner after only a few hours. The PC version has some really annoying polish issues, the worst being that it can take an unreasonable amount of time to switch between the menus and the game. It really got on my nerves considering how often I'd want to look at new equipment or check out the map.

PS3 version is in the same boat. Several times in a three hour period, I had to restart the console because I would fall through the floor or a rolling boulder would get stuck in a corner. It just got annoying, so I haven't picked it back up yet.

i usually check a game's reviews out elaborately before I buy it, unless it's a sequel to a game I like, so I don't play bad games very often. That being said, Dragon Age 2 was the most disappointing game I've ever played. Also Children of Mana for DS ended up being boring and probably the DS game I played the least.

I forget the name of it but it was on the PS1. All I remember is it was a monster truck game and it had live action cut scenes. All you did was drive through rough terrain in a straight line until you got to the end if the map.

I thought the Genesis version of Animaniacs was pretty solid, Daniel. What was so bad about the GB version?

I'm very ashamed of (and outraged over) my pre-order of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. I broke my code of not pre-ordering games that I'm uncertain about because I thought the idea was cool, and that it would serve as a good lead-up to RE6, and shed some more light on one of my favorite games, RE2. I installed it, played it for twelve minutes, turned it off, went back to GameStop, and traded it in for Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection. In essence, I paid $60 for a $20 game.

For me, Empire Earth 2. It was a long time ago, and I was pretty young, so I can't really remember what I disliked so much about it. All I know is that after about an hour I put it away and never returned to it.

The worst game I ever played, though, was Superman 64. I never bought it, I rented it from Blockbuster. In retrospect, I assumed that I couldn't get past the first minute of playing because I was a child, and therefore not that smart, but later I learned that the game is considered to be generally awful.

The very first Far Cry. I probably didn't give it enough of a chance but I think the main character is completely unlikeable and the whole monster/mutants sections really wasn't that great. I'm glad they got it right for the third Far Cry.

I loved that game. I agree that killing the mutants wasn't nearly as fun as killing the pirate/merc/whatever guys, but at the time pretty much no game on earth had the scale or draw distance of Far Cry, and that broad scope let you approach each section in a ton of different ways.

I mean, I pretty much just gunned down everyone from as far away as I possibly could. And it was awesome.

Starship Troopers on PC. I bought it many years ago before I read into game reviews before a purchase. My PC at the time was more than capable of running the game at max settings. It was buggy (unintentional pun) to the point where it was literally unplayable most of the time. The game always either crashed or did some weird thing where a light trail would freeze on the screen, making it impossible to see what was going on in the game. I only ever managed to keep the game running long enough to get through the training mission once. The gameplay was awful enough that I regret ever getting that far. I ended up just throwing the game in the trash.

Bought my girlfriend Toy Shop for DS. She was unable to make money in the game so she had me play the game. Well the game is completely absurd. Its broken, its impossible to make any money on it. You don't order toys you build them, well only 1 out of 10 toys are usable until you raise your toy making skills. By then your money is all gone.

The worst game would hands down be Vampire Rain. I cry myself to sleep thinking about buying it when it was $60. Such an appealing, badass looking concept that turned out to be the shittiest most depressing gaming moment In my life.

To be honest I would have to say Dead Island... I got it with the hopes of it being a borderlands with zombies but the repetitive gameplay and lack of a story with any flair had me trading it in within the next few days... For Dark Souls... Sooo I guess that was the best decision I've ever made.

In recent memory? Resonance of Fate. I pre-ordered it for reasons I cannot remember, bought it second day, and pretty much completely went through all the available permutations of battle in the first 2 hours. What made it worse is that I put a full 50+ hours into that game, chasing the dragon of better gameplay and story. Never happened.

Of all time though? Using all the money I had saved from birthdays and doing chores to get a 32X for my Genesis, and basically only ever playing Chaotix on it. I never got to play Doom or Afterburner until way, way after such things became mundane.

    Stronghold 2, easily.
Me and my friends were huge fans of the first Stronghold games, then we suddenly saw that there was a second one released. Without any thought we all bought it full price. Oh god why...

I think the core problems with it have since been fixed. If you get it up to date it should be fine now.

I'm going with Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Coop games are unfortunately rare, and a buddy talked me into buying this waste of $60. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is another, ...That is a game that will never be forgiven for having a jump button (As stupid as that may sound).

For PC I bought a game called O.R.B. on impulse and it turned out to be horrible because I couldnt control the ship.
Also Skytim upset me due to the loading times, that I ended up hating the game along with Fallout 3. The gameplay was fun, going anywhere and doing anything sucked.
I preorder Aliens and am disappointed, lucky gamespot does full refunds.

I haven't played Aliens yet but based on reviews I am disappointed. I will give the game my full attention. I did enjoy the two latest RE games.

uhhhh I forget what it was called but it was the "Street Fighter" Ninja Turtles game for Sega Genesis. That game was awful.

honorable mention Madden 10, glad I kept the receipt, that one went back a few days later

I really hope you're not referring to turtles in time. I will fight for their honor. Plus you got a free Pizza Hut pizza when you bought it! lawl.

Wait scratch that. I just realized you were talking about TMNT tournament fighters. I retract my previous comment.

If something negative ever came out of my mouth about Turtles in Time I would have to commit ceremonial Hairi Kari to preserve my families honor

and yes it was Tournament Fighters... just a drop in the bucket for the amount of money I (I mean my parents) spent on TNMT merchandise

RAGE - what a terrible, broken, lackluster in all ways game. Reviews were taking a long time, and I was excited for it, so went on a limb and bought it.

Unfortunately it pales in comparison to most of the games posted here, so I'll go back to work now.

    Your mom! Ha!

Naw...not really. I would have to say the most recent title that I had so much hope and anticipation for was probably Naughty Bear. I played if for an hour before realizing the reason to live the past week was totally not worth it.

I note that any game I'd like to offer up is usually a sequel - Dragon Age II, Mass Effect 3, and Diablo III are severely disappointing games which did far better business than they deserved.

Tho I wasn't disappointed with Diablo 3 I understand how some people are, but Mass Effect 3 was so good. Gets my vote for least deserved *****ed about game ever.

I've been a loyalist to GR reviews since their wee days as a website and this strategy has served me well (even though I desperately miss the letter scale grading system). With that being said, Resident Evil 5 was certainly the most disappointing game I have ever bought. The pre-GR days would include a variety of Genesis games that I thought looked really cool in elementary school, but turned out to be the opposite.

Armored Core for PS3. Now I know it has a huge following and I'm sure it has a place in someone's library but after giving it the benefit of the doubt for a week I was pretty upset at that purchase. That friend no longer has game suggestion privileges.

It's gotta be Sudeki for the original Xbox. Anyone remember that game. I can't believe I pre-ordered that...

Alf for the Sega master system... anything touched you and you died, your melee weapon was a large salami stick. He was always outside which rarely ever happened on the tv show.

Probably Drake of the 99 Dragons for the first Xbox. It was such a miserable pile that it holds a special place in my library, just as much to punish those who don't know better as to provide amusement to me with watching them struggle. I enjoy bad games that way. ^_^

GTA4. I loved 3, Vice City, and San Andreas so much that I've played through them more times than any other games I own, but I just can't get into 4. The controls are awful, the textures are nonexistent, and the all the fun got yanked out in favor of gritty realism. Don't even get me started on that damn cell phone...

I remember I convinced my mom to buy me that horrid paintball FPS on the PC. Only reason she reluctantly bought it cuz it had a exclamation on the box "NON VIOLENT!". Lol the game was so bad.

Also hunted demon forge and two worlds. Luckily they were both used and returnable for a full refund.

Tough tie between Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the PS3 or Spider-Man 3 for the Nintendo Wii.

The Force Unleashed was such an overly hyped game and as we all know, was probably the most disappointing game of '08.

Spider-Man 3 I bought as a "I hope this is good" kind of game, because I had Spider-Man 2 for the Game Cube and I thought that game was awesome.

I returned both games to EB Games in less than a week after purchase. :P

Thinking of Lunar Dragon Song, where running costs you HP, Smashing Drive with it's delightfully cheesy music and Bart Simpson vs. The Space Mutants. That last one made me rethink how I judged games.

I see no one bought Duke Nukem forever! This is cause for celebration!

Worst game bought - Deux Ex: The Conspiracy (PS2). Was hoping for so much more out of that game...

Worst game ever rented - WCW Nitro (N64).
