Tell GR: What's Your Favorite Comic Series Of All Time?

Posted on Tuesday, July 10 @ 15:33:11 Eastern by

In honor of Comic-Con, I'm in the middle of rereading some Spider-Man books I have stored away. Up next is definitely Batman: Dark Victory followed closely by a third read of Batman: Hush.

When it comes to comics, I definitely prefer The Dark Knight and The Wallcrawler. There's a weird sort of comfort I find between the two, a sense of dichotomy and duality that seems missing from other heroes and other books. They're the antithesis, the mirror, the foils of all of comics.

That said, I'm not that steeped in comics, though not a day goes by that I wish I had more time to dedicate to the medium. Comics are at a point where they rode the cultural zeitgeist, they bring in billions of dollars at the theater, and the represent some of the most recognizeable aspects of our society.

And all that will be wrapped up in the San Diego Comic-Con. So tell me,

What's your favorite comic series of all time?

Daniel do you remember which batman series it was where it was after Bane broke bruce's back and the new batman I want to say like Batman 2000 or something came into the series, got rid of the cape (after bane almost kills him (new batman) early in the issue) and added the bat gargoyle claws for climbing buildings?

I don't actually read comics. The only one I actually own is a copy of Watchmen that I bought a few months before the movie came out so I would know what all the fuss was about. Characterwise (that's right, I just made up a new word, it's already been copyrighted, so even think about using it) I prefer Batman over Spiderman.

The only comics I've read are the ones from the 60's and 70's at my cabin that were my mother's and her sibling's. But of those I'd have to say I liked the Spiderman series the best. Although the best single comic book up there is a Conan the Barbarian and the Red Sonja. So badass.

Batman is by far my favorite ongoing series, and the reboot is off to a great start. My favorite mini-series is probably Transmetropolitan.

Granted, but it still wasn't a series, it was going to be compiled from the beginning. But yeah, technically I guess it is a 'series', just a limited one. You should check out Before Watchmen, they aren't bad.

EIther Garth Ennis/Jason Aaron's massive run on Punisher MAX, or All-Star Superman. I think Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely are the most complimentary writer/artist team working today.

I read any Spider-Man I could get my hands on as a kid, which growing up in the stix wasn't much. I revisited my comic passion starting around 3 years ago and now have a bookshelf full of TPB's.

I still like some Spidey (Maximum Carnage). I always liked Batman, but rarely read the comics as a kid. The Long Halloween is good (with the obvious DK:R & DK:SA). The Joker by Brian Azzarello was super neat. I really REALLY liked reading the Sandman series. The Boys is neat in a sort of put superheros in perspective with gore and sex and smut as well as, by a fellow Alabamian, Irredeemable in the same vein. Fables is a pretty sweet series. I mentioned Transmetropolitan in response to Shandog. I've wanted to read things like Blackest Night, but I'm honestly a Marvel kid and have limited DC experience.

One of my ABSOLUTE favorites is Planetary. Only ran for a couple of TPBs with a DC crossover but it's SO DAMN GOOD if you love classic sci-fi type things, or things that don't suck.

    Hellblazer.

i would say Batman, but the stuff i've enjoyed the most have mostly been graphic novels, not ongoing series.

    as for miniseries: Preacher.
Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon are a great team.

Also i recommend yall check out the 'Criminal' series by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. they also did Incogito, which is great.

If you like well told, noir crime you will like Criminal. has the same feel as Incognito but not as stylised as Sin City.

just ordered 9 variant covers of issue #100. overkill, maybe. worth it? yes. i did not have to pay much. and when it comes i can finally read the last 3 issues i bought. (i hate being cliffhung in a comic book series)

Wolverine, before he lost his adamantium, before the Apocalypse parallel universe, before his son, before Sabertooth was killed, before the origin series. I stopped getting comics when I saw the way they were headed. I made a wise decision.

The Dark Avengers was a pretty good read. Granted I didn't do the whole 50 states initiative and whatnot. I paid too much money for a tpb of Fatal Attractions, which was alright, but as a child of the 90s I do remember picking up on-off Wolverine issues with the bone claws and thinking it was neat but being confused.

I'm not big enough a Wolverine fan to have done the origin series or followed him too much, but Old Man Wolverine was very enjoyable as a Marvel kid.

I was ok with the normal skeleton Wolverine, always did wonder why Magneto didnt do something to enemies made of metal like him and Colossus. As a kid you get invested in these characters and their stories and then they change so much around it isnt the comic you enjoyed anymore.

i stopped reading Marvel a few years ago. Spiderman got me into reading comics, X-men and Wolverine thrusted me forward.

if any comic was to get me back into Marvel it would be Wolverine. i understand what yer sayin tho. once a super hero character gains popularity and so many writers take apon themselves the task of writing a different, meaningful, story for that character it becomes convoluted and so abundant that reading it becomes a task itself. so many people write things which have to do with other stuff that people have already established which becomes something you need to read.

which is why i like Batman: Year One.

    also, im drunk.

Wolverine, Spiderman, all the X teams, Fantastic 4, and Avengers West Coast... I dont know why I liked them more than the original Avengers team. Wolvie and Spideys storylines got so out there and weird I just had to walk away from it or become a way too bitter comic fan.

Favorite is Nightly News graphic novel by Johnathan Hickman. If it has to be one of the 'big ones' I'd pick Arkhum Asylum by Morrison.
