Tell GR: Which Upcoming Games Will Be GR's 2012 Game Of The Year Nominees?

Posted on Friday, October 19 @ 16:06:41 Eastern by

The announcement of Game Revolution's official nominees for Game of the Year is only two months away, and we're already having a hard time trimming the list down to five titles (maybe more, maybe fewer).

On Game Revolution Radio several weeks ago, I was extremely lenient on what could be nominated, but let's be honest here. There are only a handful of prospective titles released so far that could legitimately make the list: Mass Effect 3, Journey, Dishonored, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Borderlands 2, Darksiders II, Mark of the Ninja, UFC Undisputed 3, and Dragon's Dogma. (Plus Guild Wars 2, thanks LawnGnome!)

However, the year is hardly over.

We've still got around seven potential game-changers down the line for the holiday season: Assassin's Creed III, Need for Speed World, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Hitman: Absolution, and Far Cry 3. They are all worthy of contention, some more than others.

I haven't even mentioned any of the launch titles for the Wii U. Maybe ZombiU, Nintendo Land, or New Super Mario Bros. U will blow us away. Maybe not.

Which upcoming games will become our GotY nominees? And which of those games won't? Sound off your predictions in the comments below.

Mark of the Ninja is pretty fun. I don't like much dark and shadowy games, but it uses that design to its advantage. Love the optional objectives the most. To answer your question, however, there's too many games to be looked at first. Heath Hindman has his choice already. I'm going to see how the other games layout before I make a decision. So far, this feels like the Most Anticipated GOTY.

As great of a game as it is, giving it to Mass Effect might be a risky choice. I was a bit disappointed with the ending as well, sure, but it's still a terrific gaming experience overall. I personally wouldn't argue with this pick, but I wouldn't doubt that you would get some death threats from people given all the crap that it received after its launch.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing it yet, but I've heard some astounding things about Dishonored (likely to be my next purchase).

I can't possibly see how Assassin's Creed 3 could be a letdown at all. I already know it's going to be a great game. I can see this one being a safe bet.

All things considered though, my personal pick (as of right now, since it's the only other nominee I've played aside from Mass Effect) would still have to be Borderlands 2. Dear sweet tapdancing baby Jesus is it good.

Deep inside me, i kinda want Mass effect 3 to win just to shove it on whiners' faces and to bring a clear message: Endings does not define a game.
However, game wise it pales in comparison to its predecessor Mass effect 2. For that, it won't make the cut I still feel honored for it to be on the list though.

And you are right, Borderlands 2 got my vote as well!

Funny, I don't agree with even one of the games you mentioned, or any of the upcoming games. My personal list would be:
    Sound Shapes
    Persona 4 Arena
    Kid Icarus: Uprising
    Lumines: Electronic Symphony
    Pro Evolution Soccer 2013
    Gravity Rush

And a dark(er) horse pick, God Of Blades for the iOS.

Ok gang... let me be clear here. I LOVE Diablo 3. I like how smooth the animation are, how combat feels simple and rewarding, townspeople are now full of love and script rather then just a quest linked to them, the lore of sanctuary has been greatly expended and graphically, it's a beauty. I know there are some flaws in the game (like say the looting system that's being fixed patch by patch) and the DRM leaves little to forgive. But to call it a disgrace to the game community?
Well i got news for ya, there are still people playing this game, there are people who played Diablo 2 and love this game, there are people who played this game for a month but still enjoyed it.
Maybe... the game isn't trash like you say... maybe it was just had a different view of what makes a good Diablo game and that D3 was never meant for you... but for us.

I don't really have a problem with the rest of the list even in the case of games I didn't particularly like, but GOTY candidates are games you can see winning the award for the best game released that year. With that in mind... Darksiders 2? Really? I mean I'm not saying it's a bad game but... just think about that.

Oh and for the record, I'm all about Dishonored. It may have been a little short but I felt it was exactly as long as it needed to be for the game to maintain a lemony freshness throughout. For a game I thought looked just awful before release it was definitely a surprise.

Sleeping Dogs was actually a fantastic game in my opinion. Sure, I've spent almost twice as many hours on Borderlands 2, but I enjoyed my time in Hong Kong more than Pandora. I waited for the extended ending before I finished ME3 so no disappointment there, but still not the best game this year for me. I'm still waiting for my copy of Dishonored to arrive & Hitman should be great too, but so far my personal GOTY is Sleeping Dogs.

Of all the games I've played thus far, I will still wholeheartedly back Mass Effect 3 as my frontrunner for GOTY. While many had an issue with the ending (didn't bother me too much because l knew it couldn't possibly live up to my expectations) the journey to get there was absolutely amazing. It's really a shame that all of the incredible moments throughout the game have been overshadowed by the somewhat disappointing ending.

That said, there are still two games on the horizon that could change my pick: Assassin's Creed III and Halo 4.

Best game overall for me is HalfLife: BlackMasa. It's still one of the best shooters and playing it reminded me how far behind series like halo and CoD are.

If I'm not allowed to go with a remake then the best game I've played this year has been Botanicula. This has to be the cutest game ever made. The visuals are breath taking from start to finish, the characters are a lot of fun. The puzzles are interesting and sometimes take a lot of thought but are never frustrating. The textless, dialogless story telling is very well executed and compelling tale. Most importantly though from start to finish I found myself always happy and always having fun. If you haven't played it play it, it will probably become a gaming highlight of the year for you too.

Mass Effect 3 damn you EA and can't deny that the single player campaign and multiplayer were well done. The 2.5 GB worth of free expansions to the multiplayer also kept me engaged for far longer than expected. So as much as I complain about having to pay for DLC making a system where the gamer gets free expansions with 6 new characters and plethra of weapons that can only be purchased via random equipment packs (gambling at it's finest) it works for both parties. We get free expansions and you get between $3-$6 on average as people purchase premium spectre packs in hopes of unlocking that oh so awesome next class. Kudos

Probably more that $3-$6 dollars depending on how bad people want a particular class or weapon. Seriously an awsome and effective spin on micro transaction formula. No you can't buy what you want but you can buy a lotto ticket that may get you what you want...Mass Effect 4 Powerball Edition
