Tell Us What You'd Want if SEGA Made Another Console

Posted on Thursday, October 13 @ 15:37:10 Eastern by

We're just one day away from unveiling the GameRevolution-built next-gen console of all our wildest, wettest dreams. There's just a few key ingredients missing. Ingredients which we must pluck from the hardcore SEGA fans out there.

SEGA Genesis was the first console to make Nintendo sweat through their power gloves. Without SEGA, the landscape of video games today would be very different. If making an ultimate console mash-up, we couldn't leave out SEGA.

If SEGA got back into the console business, what would you want to see in a new SEGA console?

To be honest, it doesn't matter who makes it, but ultimately we want the same things out of every console. The difference is then on how powerful it is and the software. In that case I would like a compilation disc with the greatest Dreamcast games on it.

Sorry, no offence to Sega, but there isn’t enough room in the market for a fourth console company right now. Hardcore gamers in North America have the PS3 and the Xbox 360, casual gamers have Wii’s, Kinects, and handheld consoles. In Japan the PSV is coming out this December, the PSP and the 3DS are still selling well, and the PS3 is the home console choice. It would be an uphill battle for another company to get into the market. It would take a long time to see a profit form a new console, and I don’t believe that Sega has deep enough pockets to pull this off. Not only would they need deep pockets, but they would need a stellar product that out shines the competition and that is priced competitively.

As most people know games sell consoles and to be honest Sega does not have an in house stable of games that everybody wants to play. Sega is successful as a game publisher, trying to recapture past glory as a console maker would probably kill the company. Also a fifth platform, the WiiU, the Xbox 720, the PS4, PC, and a new Sega platform would have developers picking which platforms to support and which to ignore due to development costs and install base. So, it ain’t going to happen.

Full maracas-controller support. It always bugged me that I couldn't samba-shake zombies to death in house of the dead 2.

I mean let's face it, I'm a maracas master. I can break rocks in power rush mode like whatever. Zombies are much softer than rocks, therefore I should be able to disintegrate them easily with the power of samba. And I can't play Soul Calibur with my maracas, either? They were eighty dollars, sega. come on. We all know this is the real reason the DC failed, not the Microsoft-Sony blood pact conspiracy or slightly inferior graphixxx or what not.

A good 2D ToeJam and Earl game with a re-release of ToeJam and Earl/Panic on Funkotron.
And backwards compatibility so I wouldn't have to plug in Genny when I want some old-school Sega goodness.

    Blu-Ray support
Hard drive (250GB +, SSD maybe?)
    - Games need not be installed!
    Cross-platform multiplayer (PC/SEGA DC2 only at first).
An Xbox-Live like online service/experience (no cumbersome friend codes).
MegaDrive/Genesis styled controllers, with the added control functions of current gen controllers.
Integrated motion sensor technology, but not like the six-axis debacle.
    - No glowy lollipop controllers either.
Integrated web browsing, but with added functionality (screw the Wii's browser!).
    Open structure OS.
    Developer tools, allow homebrews!
Able to connect to bluetooth devices.
    Support for USB memory drives.

Hell, why don't I buy a PC instead?

    NO FACEBOOK / TWITTER INTEGRATION
    * In fact, no 'social network' hype styled crap at all.

Free SEGA classic pre-installed (yes, all the MegaDrive/Genesis era sonics!)

A controller with force feedback like the one that Sony made for Ridge Racer Type 4 would be sweet.
Something inbuilt into the console for charging your controllers that requires no addional peripherals.
Indie development app built-into the console that links to linux, mac, pc command line interfaces and gui's for home brew apps to be encouraged.
An online marketplace where games you own on other platforms can be redeemed for this console through online DRM and co-operation with companies that already exhibit strong relations with sega (i.e. microsoft and nintendo).
