The perils of the Hype Train…

The recent release of Evolve and The Order 1886 really got me to thinking about the disparity between the perspective of sales-driven publishers and the quality-driven purchases of consumers. The “Hype Train” is nothing new, but the way it is utilized has been creating far more...

DAILY MANIFESTO

The Return of the King

Posted on Monday, June 4 @ 21:48:16 Eastern by Duke_Ferris
About fourteen hours of planes, trains and automobiles later, and I have safely returned from Iceland to the vast Game Revolution compound. I was happy to be back, until I saw the press release in my inbox.

First, however, my last bit about Eve Online. For those of you who didn't know from my occasional posts, Ive been playing Eve for four years now - I never got interested in World of Warcraft. It's not evil enough, I really just don't understand the point of PVP where you don't risk winning or losing everything.

And CCP, the makers of Eve, obviously risked everything and won. From a company of three people who went unpaid for months in order to finish their game, they now have over 200,000 subscribers and 200 employees. They seem to almost be Icelandic folk heroes at this point.  Their huge, lavish party (not to mention my own nonstop-party trip) was very clearly an attempt to show off their shiny new pimp hat.

Part of that boasting included the entirely fan-made video you see here.  These are all the real in-game graphics from a game made four years ago, only the camera angles have been changed. For a hi-res download, go here. When the Vista version of the game client comes out, I can't wait to see some even more amazing work.

Oh, and that bad news in my inbox? The announcement of the Dirty Dancing video game. This is either April Fools Day or Armageddon, and is too painful to contemplate. Is it too late to fly back? I could use more shots of Brennavin.
