Today's news is brought to you by Sony, all of it. First, their Europe Press Office dropped this bomb, announcing that the PS3 launch would be delayed in every country except the United States and Japan until March 2007. Tough luck, suckers, there's always Wii60! Not only does this delay guarantee the PS3 will miss a major share of the global holiday season (at least, we think they celebrate Christmas in Europe by shopping), it also marks a failure on Sony's part to follow Microsoft's fancy global act in 2005.
BUT DON'T PANIC.
At least, not if you live in Japan or the United States, because Sony will have plenty of PS3's for you to stick under your Christmas trees and bonsai bushes. Or at least they would if it weren't for Sony's second bombshell of the day, that they're launching with only 500,000 units total! To put that in perspective, Microsoft sold 500,000 Xbox 360s in Europe alone during its first month in stores. Then again, Microsoft only wound up selling 1.5 million units in 2005, and Sony promises to ship 2 million (recently down from 4 million) PS3's by the end of 2006, so in spite of the global meltdown, Sony could still outlaunch Microsoft.
But that's the point! The PS3 is supposed to beat the pants off the Xbox 360. With an install base of 100 million satisfied customers, how can you go wrong? How indeed. Sony's tactic has been to eviscerate themselves with the laser sharp edge of a Blu-Ray disc, one terrible P.R. announcement at a time. You see, Sony thinks they can use their leverage in the video game market to introduce a new media format, thus cornering two industries at once and making enough money to, well, buy a PS3. The fact that such a gamble was driving the cost of their system above the $600 mark used to seem ironic, used to before a shortage of Blu-Ray diodes cost the company a holiday launch in Europe. Suddenly, $600 doesn't seem so expensive.

| Good things come to those who wait. My cousin bought a new Xbox 360, and it has more bugs and slowdown than a highway rest stop, not to mention IT ISNT BACKWARDS COMPATABLE. |

| scotty, sony doesnt even know CANADA exists...
...they think its just the unopened, frozen-shut attic of the US.
i think this system has major potential, but the number of set-backs is really astonishing. i bet sony will take a HUGE hit-... and i know that in GERMANY, its customary to put oranges and small toys in childrens shoes the night before christmas.
GERMAN santa makes me fear ever travelling outside out "ivory" country... hah! |

| Wow. Just wow.
Hearing all this news makes you wonder "what next?" And the scary part is that even with half a million units there'll still be massive shortages at launch in the US and Japan--excessively long lines and ridiculous markups on eBay will be the rule. When the PS2 launched there were reports of assaults and physical beatings--I think someone got stabbed, too. With these kinds of shortages, and the expected demand, I wholly expect someone to get shot. I expect at least one person to get trampled. I expect fistfights, I expect verbal abuse, I expect at least one lawsuit, but more importantly I expect millions of gamers worldwide to say "F*** SONY". This blunder is going to cost them big-time. |

| I live in Belgium, got a text message sent to me by the shop where I could order PS3. Disappointed. I guess Wii don't have to wait. |
