This chapter in the saga of the uber rig comes to an end.... and a bit of a cliffhanger. If you missed earlier episodes, they can be found here and here.

When the good folks at Nvidia presented me with two of the most powerful video cards in the world to play with, I had two options. Either build two incredibly fast and awesome cutting edge gaming rigs, or build something unbelievably stupid powerful. The choice was clear.

Vista has been installed without a hitch, and it runs very, very fast. I haven't started playing with the overclocking yet either.

Unfortunately, the full potential remains to be seen. I can only use one of the 8800 GTX cards because drivers with SLI support for the 8800 don't come out until later today, and even those will still  be in beta and will only support SLI for DirectX 9.

On the other hand, that's not such a big deal, because until Supreme Commander comes out, I don't have any games that use DirectX 10 anyway. What I do have is a tech demo from Nvidia that renders a sort of endlessly growing, spinning rock with a waterfall. Admittedly, it is a very pretty rock and a most excellent waterfall.

What I really want to do and see with this box that contains a tiny god will just have to wait for a bit. I'm not good at waiting, so perhaps it's fortunate that I leave for vacation tomorrow. I leave behind me these awesome technologies and will embrace the warmer climes of Belize for a few weeks. I hear the waves that roll into those golden shores are rendered in real time.

When I return, I'll see what incredible advancements have been made in my absence.

Oh, and in case you were wondering if our new computer beams a Game Revolution logo in front of it like a searing headlight of truth... fear not, it does.

With great patience, comes great rewards. With great power, comes great responsibility. An amazing rig, sir. The Vista rig I have in mind is not nearly as powerful as this, but will be able to run Aero well. Enjoy that beast.

Jesus, that Game Revolution logo touch is out of this world. How can I cop one of those huh? Amazing and beautiful, I wish it were mine.

You know what you guys should do? You should build a second computer just like this one, and give it away in one of your monthly contest things instead of the usual box of games. I know you probably won't do that, but hey, just a suggestion. I know a lot of readers would like it.

Indeed, to make it even better, charge a useless amount to enter the contest. Multiply the pocket change times the number of entries..... = GR doesen't lose money, one happy GR reader. (and maybe even upgrade the Uber machine to 4GB of Corsair, and an X-FI series sound card...)

Actually I've been hearing that Vista doesn't support hardware-based sound, like soundcards, but rather software based. however there are patches to be able to use your soundcards properly on Vista, but they're still a little early, and I'd imagine it takes a while to do. Then again, you can't spell ignorant without IGN, so I'm not sure the article was all that reliable. They've been known to mess up info on occasion. But that four gigs of RAM sounds perfectly good, bring it on!

Considering from what I've heard, Vista needs at least 1 GB just to kick over, I'm going to have to up the specs on my planned rebuild because this thing isn't gonna cut it.
