And Today's Fake News Story Is...

WoW player harrasses woman in-game, gets beat up by woman's husband IRL. The problem with sites like Digg or Reddit is that people voting on a news item doesn't make it TRUE.
And then the less-than-careful bloggers all write about it and suddenly it's all over the net. In this case, as far as I can tell, the story was made up by Fun Tech Talk, and it managed to get them some decent traffic.
Mexico City, Mexico-(MH)-Mexican World of Warcraft player Bronco Carson reported to local police on Saturday that 3 men broke into his home and beat his arms with clubs and smashed his computer. It was supposedly in retaliation for Carson stalking and repeatedly killing one of the attackers wife’s character during computer video game play.
 Carson admitted to police that he had been “making it hard for her to get far in the game.” He said that after repeated online threats from the woman, she sent her husband and friends over to his house to “take care of him.” Carson later said that he had made the mistake of telling her where he lived and “if her husband was man enough to just come meet me to settle this.”
This story is everywhere right now, from poorly researched posts on Destructoid to G4. Today, Qj.net made the front page of Digg by posting this same, fictional story, and are probably enjoying a huge traffic boost.
But the story is an obvious fake. First off, for Carson to have killed this woman's character, they'd have to be in opposite factions. This would prevent them from talking at all, making the history of insults and threats not just unlikely, but impossible. Second, just do a Google search for "Bronco Carson" and you won't find a single reputable news source. All leads dead end back with the liars at Fun Tech Talk.
See how easy that was? Why don't many other sites do that? Because they don't care if what they do is accurate, so long as it gets them traffic.

| What ever happened to Journalistic integrity? I mean, the internet is different, and frankly, who really cares if some guy got beat up because he was being a jerk on WOW or not. But still, it seems that flat out lying to the public should be avoided. Isn't there some sort of law about doing that in newspapers or on television? |

I saw everything. After those 3 men beat him up and smashed his computer, (rather then stealing it), they left their wallets with all their personal id and a full confession made on DVD transcripted and directions back to their own houses. |

I have a Wow account and when i feel like insulting some idiot from the opposite faction i log on to my friends account and do so.
How hard is that ?
People ARE allowed to have 2 accounts.
People DO share accounts.
As for some reputable news source not printing this there are many reason
a) the couldnt be bothered to check if its true or not , its not so simple.
b) not everyone plays online and even those who do dont care
c) so someone beat up someone else ... /cheer . If i had a copper for everytime that happens id have an epic mount ages ago.
Whomever posted this isnt true cos he thinks it isnt true just cos he cant talk cross faction is just plain stupid. |
