All this hoopla about Manhunt 2's AO rating got me wondering what other games were violent enough to get an AO. Turns out, there's only one: Thrill Kill.
No, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas doesn't count, it was re-rated for its not-fully-deleted sexual content, not its violence which only scored it an M. Plenty of other games, like Singles: Flirt up your Life, also got their AO rating for sexual content. Only Thrill Kill was purely about the violence. In a sad sign for Manhunt 2, Thrill Kill was never released. Virgin Interactive was going to publish it for the Playstation, but then they got bought by EA just a few weeks before the game's launch. EA, however, immediately pulled the plug and said they'd never publish such a violent game. The four-person fighting game engine developed for the game was used in Wu-Tang Shaolin Style, however. I don't know if it counts as piracy or not since the game was never released, but you can download it here if you like. As a sign of the times though, based on that footage, I'd say that Thrill Kill would never get an AO rating now, with those silly, over-the-top kills and now-primitive graphics.

No kidding, this isn't worse than Mortal Kombat... who the hell rated this thing AO?!
Anyway, hope the ESRB come back to its senses... Manhunt 2 can't be THAT more violent than Manhunt, can it?! |

| Now if they had a fatality involving bizzar doll erotica, then I would fully support this games posthumous acceptance into the gaming world |

| There are a few other AO-rated games. There's a porn game called X-Change for instance. |

| i can see how that got an AO, the second decapitation killed my PC, if it could do that then it must have been violent. |

| this is a bit hypocritical since theyre handing out the AO rating at violent video games and i can guarantee you a movie like the new rambo (i mean, has anyone seen the trailer for that, geezs) would never get NC-17 for its violence. |

| Keep in mind that we're basing this AO rating by today's standards. While this game can't compare to the modern-day Manhunt 2, you got to admit that the whole point behind the AO rating for both of these games is the same - Killing for the fun of it, while pitting the main characters in bleak, sadomasochistic environments.
With the advent of game successes like Mortal Kombat at the time, Thrill Kill must have been just another that was trying to make a quick buck off of this wave of interest, while trying to push the envelope even further. I'm not sure about the rest of you guys, but personally I could see why both of these games could possibly garner the AO, but I personally wouldn't recommending censoring games just based off of stuff like this - I mean, come on, don't you think that there would have been a whole lot more publicized cases of murder if violent games really did inspire violent action? |
