When he's not flipping out and killing people, GR's Nick Tan likes to apply his ninja skills to Guitar Hero. He rocks so hard you simply cannot handle it. Seriously.

And the other day at a Guitar Hero III party in San Francisco, he rocked so hard Activision could not handle it. The unlockable song Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce is designed to be the hardest in the game, like the nearly impossible Jordan by Buckethead in Guitar Hero II. Except in this case, in the words of the developers, for GH3 they "designed this to be unbeatable, dammit!".

Never, ever say that.

After a couple run-throughs, Nick's skills had Activision so amazed they started filming him on his third attempt. And on the fourth, he beat it, in expert mode, which is the main video here.

Skeptical? If you want confirmation, here is the lead designer confirming Nick's status as the first person to have ever beaten the song.

For a close up of the brutal challenge, here's the first half. The full song is over five minutes.

Needless to say, nobody at Activision expected anyone to actually beat the game at their preview party. Here's his final scoreboard. Way to go Nick!

EDIT: Nick has written up a personal account with a lot more detail. You should check it out.

Aren't these songs based on real songs? Someone had to have been playing this song in real life, not just with 4 colored buttons.

And yet, as HUGE of an accomplishment as this is, no media source will cover it. If they can't use video games to market fear, they won't care. Only Grand Theft Auto will ever get any major air time.

But really, I'd like your autograph Nick. Please?

I will give autographs to all who also like my Folklore review. Nah, just kiddin', Longo. Sorry you didn't like the review, though I think the review is justified and that the grade was more than fair for something that was repetitive and convoluted. I mean, you essentially have to play it twice.

WARCRAFT??? Get a life man and play some real games. I'm playing CoH and C&C 3 right now. And on the guitar hero i have one thing to say: EXPANSION, filled with "unbeatable" tracks would be nice

Well, the song is Through the Fire and Flames, by Dragonforce, off of their album Inhuman Rampage. The two guitarists are Herman Li and Sam Totman, and they trade solos for much of the middle of the song. Kirk Hammet once called him the fastest shredder he'd ever seen.

Gotta give it up to the guy that song looks freaking harder then hell. Plus 1st person to beat it he automatically gets put in hall of fame for this game. I just hope one day ill be able to play at least one song on expert =(

I bet this guy can't even play a real guitar. Sparky, don't you DARE compare him to a real guitar player like Dime or Kirk. And Plant is a singer...could you possibly have meant Page?

Way to pee all over Nick's accomplishment. Would it have been too hard to say "Nice job Nick. Sparky, I think you meant to reference Jimmy Page, not Robert Plant." rather than telling him to not "DARE" compare Nick to a real guitarist and run down something that is a pretty amazing feat?

I'm a big Dragonforce fan and I can tell you that them boys play guitar like no others!!! What Nick has done is more than impressive, but if you want to see real madness, watch a Dragonforce music video! Not just 4 coloured buttons to hammer! 6 strings of complete rock rampage! Well done Nick, rock on dragonforce!!!

I really wonder if the people who like to insult other people who are good at Guitar Hero do that for all other video games. Like if someone is playing Halo and they get a sweet headshot do they say "Oh man I bet you can't even shoot a real gun!" or if someone is playing Metroid and they defeat an intergalactic space alien they say "Oh man I bet you've never even been to space". Congratulations Nick. That was pretty badass.

Despite the snarkiness... yeah, I don't play the guitar. Like most Guitar Hero fans, I wish I could, and with a couple of staffers who actually play guitar, I'm slowly being converted into the "real" fold. However, I still think the accomplishment stands for itself and, well, it's gotten about 30,000 views on YouTube, so it's a pretty cool thing for GR to feature - and for me to continue doing all for GR's take-over-the-freakin' world cause. So I'm glad most of you understand the plan. *evil smirk* On Dragonforce, some people can't bear to listen to them, but having seen their music video for TTFAT, they're just completely sick. Some label them as a rock spoof something metal hack, but I don't mind the song or their skills. Can't really hate them for making the video possible, can I?

Token, I do say the same thing for other games. I played Halo with an Iraq war vet once and he completely sucked at it. Who deserves more recognition - me, for being good at Halo, or him for being an amazing soldier? (He recorded at least 15 kills in Iraq.) I do play Guitar Hero - it's a fun and addicting game. But someone who's that good at real guitar has taken years of practice to get there...not the 2 years Guitar Hero has been out. Read the biography of someone like Slash - he spent 10-14 hours a day for decades playing guitar until he got good at it. So who should I respect more - some kid who can push buttons fast, or a couple of internationally-renowned guitarists?

The thing is no one is saying one should be respected over the other. All we're doing is congratulating someone for accomplishing something that most could not and your comment just comes off as bitter and angry.

Masteracha, how about you respect someone for being able to push buttons fast, and also with the right timing, and the people who are internationally-renowned guitarists be respected for being good at the guitar?

People, it's easy to be not a dick towards what people accomplish in their lives. Respect may be a two way street, but it's big enough for everyone to find the skill that they can do well.

Ya soldiers are conditioned to kill...it just takes a little more out of a person psychologically to kill someone than to be good at a video game. Yeah, we're all gaming losers. I'd respect this dude 1000 times more if he got up on that stage with a real guitar and played that Dragonforce song (and I hate Dragonforce.) Bottom line: guitar > guitar hero. Always.

Masteracha... Guitar = Music, Guitar Hero = Game... Two completely diferent things, we r giving him kudos for being good at a game, not for being a good guitarrist... So stop whining... Btw, Nick, Can you teach me to be a ninja? After watching that video i decided that ninjas rock (literally too)... Gratz man, that was sick

I have an easier time playing most of the songs for real than on expert... Take "The Metal" for instance... IRL that is so much easier for me to play than on Expert :/
