What are you playing? 11/05/2011

Posted on Saturday, November 5 @ 10:50:32 Eastern by

Welcome back to another edition of What are you playing? where I ask you what you're playing and you tell me and then maybe you discuss what everyone else is playing too.

This week I'm reloaded with reviews. Dance Central 2 and Kinect Sports Season 2 will be keeping me on my feet while Goldeneye 007 Reloaded will be planted firmly in my PS3. Next week will be really busy with some big business. Still, I'm wondering...

What are you playing?

Well, nothing lately but I just bought Battlefield 3 and I'm hoping to have time to play it tomorrow.

Probably a lot. What do you think of Terraria? I've been interested in picking that up and it's pretty frequently on sale on Steam.

Terraria is a like a mix between Super Metroid, and Minecraft. However, unlike Minecraft, there is progression, and a reason to explore beyond "get the Diamond!". There are bosses, lots (LOTS) of monster variety, day/night cycles, Minecraft like stuff (such as building/etc). There is also cool items like grappling hooks, Phaseblades (Lightsabers!), a Magic system (fuels magic items/spells), and character creation. It's really neat, you should give it a shot. If you do, a few friends of mine play on a server that I host, I could toss you the address at some point.

DC Universe Online. Won't occupy my attention for more than a few days. Good distraction until my shitton of games arrive.

    UC3, BF3, MW3, Arkham City and RAGE.
See you guys in 10 years.

Hey man, is DC Universe good? I can't really find any description of the mechanics. Is it like City of Heroes/Villains or the Crap-fest that is Champions?

I'm not a fan of MMO's, or the combat they employ. At all. I hate it.
I can stomach DC Universe though, its not just MASH X MASH X MASH X HOTKEY.
Well, not all the time. Character creation is fun, and there seems to be a nice set of skills.
Some of them are kinda of weird though. Batman is my mentor, yet I can run on water and hang upside down from ceilings.

You WILL get bored when given your first mission in the city. It is the biggest grindfest I've ever had the displeasure of taking part in. My goodness. You really do get that feeling of being a superhero, especially when you leap from a huge building and you make a crater in the ground, or when you're gliding around then flow smoothly into a giant whirlwind kick to someone's face.

The text is small, so you need to make sure to change that in the options menu. Also, once you're out into the city, find the Bat signal. There's nothing cooler than a bunch of superheroes all standing at the edge of a building. Screenshot time.

I haven't finished the main story yet, I'm actually right before the plane sequence that they advertised the hell out of. Honestly, so far there really isn't much story. Early on we got to see how Sully and Nate met, and then spent most of the game so far went globe trotting for clues to the Atlantis of the Sands, which Nathan is hell bent on finding for as yet unknown reasons. That's pretty much the story so far, sure, lot's of neat things happen, and there was one scene with Elena that was so well done that I've seen blockbuster movies with worse acting. The environments are more or less gorgeous and the puzzles are just hard enough that you have think about them for a second, but don't get terribly frustrated. So far, I'm loving it. My only real complaint is the camera. They go for cinematic, which makes the game look good, but makes it harder to maneuver than it needs to be.

Well... I started playing Driver: San Francisco because I heard it was pretty good, but so far it reminds me of Burnout 2 but without the actual focus of racing. And anti-aliasing does nothing for some reason, which is a shame because the graphics look like they're from last generation.
