E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

What Are You Playing? February 18th, 2012

Posted on Saturday, February 18 @ 10:00:00 Eastern by

As we wind down for the week, I'm thinking about all the retail games I have sitting on my shelves. I've got a massive backlog, but I can't help it! I'm getting back into Mass Effect 3's multiplayer demo.

Have you tried Bioware's shot in the dark at addictive multiplayer? I need to level up a few more characters. I want to play as a Drell. I need new weapons and mods and powers. I'll be on my Xbox 360 (gamertag: danielrbischoff) this weekend, doing all that and more in the upcoming sci-fi shooter. Have you read this yet? Fantastic article about Mass Effect's importance in science fiction, check it out.

What are you playing?

Gotham City Impostors on my PS3. Yes, it does have matchmaking issues now and then, but it's too much fun to put down for me!

Yeah, add me: Sweet InsaniTea. I'm not set up for voice chat right now though. I've only played a few matches (and completed 1), but what I have played I've absolutely loved. I usually do 2 playthroughs on my Mass Effect games (1 paragon, 1 renegade) amounting to about 60 hours of gameplay in ME2, but I'm now envisioning myself spending even more time playing the multiplayer. I'm quite impressed. Single player demo rocked too, although I did quit after the intro. Once it said it was skipping to a mission later in the game I started saying "No, no, no, exit, exit, exit!" No spoilers thank you.

Got a Minecraft server running through Hamachi so my friend and I can play. Slowed down on Skyrim. Might start a new character. Starting up Trine 2 and Project Zomboid again. Still having fun with BF3 and MW3.

It runs great. I can run the server on my computer through Hamachi and play it no problem. They're releasing (or released) an update soon that will double the world height, allowing for bigger mountains and higher buildings. Whole bunch of nifty items and graphical stuff added, too.

Just finished up Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I really loved the gameplay, which is not something I say often when it comes to FPSs (Granted, it's more stealth/RPG than FPS). Anyone who liked the idea of humans using technology to become "better" should read the (hilarious) novel Machine Man by Max Barry. I see it as a prequel to Human Revolution.

I'm so intimidated by it though. I've heard stories about people getting spawn camped pretty hard and insane sniper rifle kills.

Yes, occasional spawn camping and period of getting-used-to-controls (espacially aiming with those unique camera mechanics) will scare off most of newbies.

It's not too bad, obviously not as good as having an actual controller, but hey. I'm still kinda giddy every time I play it, it amazes me that one of the biggest, baddest games on one of the most advanced systems from 10 years ago can be played on this dinky little gadget. And, hey, for 5 bucks, you can't go wrong. :D

Final Fantasy XIII-2. 'Tis pretty fun thus far. I like the story better than the first game and the battle system is still very enjoyable although a bit too easy this time around. We'll have to see how the post-game holds up.

Having not played either yet, how has the story improved? I've heard really positive things and really "meh" things, but I'd have to start with XIII first...

Final Fantasy stories have always been more about the characters than a main story arc. FF XIII did a good job with character growth and development but spent time establishing its world and the driving story was okay but not great. XIII-2 has a story that is very personal to the characters being controlled, and while the narrative is disjointed at times due to the erratic nature of location/time choice by the player as well as the inclination for time travel to be inherently paradoxical, the story is told with a certain flourish and personality that I enjoyed thoroughly.

Rayman: Origins. This game would have 100% flown under my radar were it not for the glowing GR review. It's incredible! Like, Super Mario World incredible. There is a ton of subtle brilliance to the design, especially to the menu/overworld choices: Everything is geared towards keeping you in the amazing gameplay for as long as possible. And those graphics!!! I hope the UbiArt tool sees a LOT more use.

Perhaps most importantly, there is no WAY Ubisoft can deny Michel Ancel full creative control for BG&E2 after what he's managed to do for Rayman here.
