E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

What Are You Playing? January 19th, 2013

Posted on Saturday, January 19 @ 10:47:31 Eastern by

It's all Fire Emblem Awakening for me this weekend. With DmC: Devil May Cry all squared away, I've got to get a head start on Nintendo's upcoming SRPG. At a recent meeting with the publisher for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (exciting details coming next week), I was told Fire Emblem clocks in at about 100 hours.

Other than that, the alien threat won't fight itself, and honestly I don't think I've squished enough X-rays, so X-COM: Enemy Unknown will most likely get a spin or two as well. Maybe my female MC will get a little farther in Persona 3 Portable too. Who knows?

What are you playing?

Going through my backlog. Just (finally) went back and finished Arkham City. Now I'm running around that damn Skyrim again (focusing on the main quests). Im thinking about purchasing DmC but I might wait becasue I think I will replay Dead Space 1 and 2. Gotta get my skills back for when the necromorphs return in February!!

I've had Dead Space 1 for over two years but never got into it. I should give it another try sometime.

The Dead Space series is amazing. Lights of at night just makes the game that little bit better! You really should take the time and play it.

It's getting repetitive. The tension is still there, but it seems like there's no change in pace, and the surprises are getting less and less surprising the further I get. Overall, though, it's still pretty solid. I'm almost done!

I played the demo a few days ago. It's got that Dead Space feel to it, but it's really ramping up the action factor in this one. Killing non-necromorphs with the plasma cutter is kind of weird. And using the workbench as the store/safe is a cool idea, but the weapon customization is going to take a lot of getting used to. The demo also doesn't tell you much about the plot. I like that it doesn't give anything spoilerish away, but kind of wished it would at least tell you what the hell was going on.

Definitely look for the preview which goes live tomorrow at midnight. I can't say anymore, but as someone who's got a lot of love for the series and its origins, I wasn't disappointed.

Devil May Cry! I love that game so much.
I'll probably continue my Mass Effect Trilogy playthrough I started before the holidays, and maybe give another try to those FUCKING Catalina missions in GTA San Andreas, since I've never seen San Fierro in my life.

    But mostly Devil May Cry.

A little Civ V, LoL, BF3, and maybe replay some SC2 campaign to get ready for the expansion. If the 49ers lose on Sunday it'll probably turn into an all-night video game binge though. Found out yesterday that they still haven't released another Madden for the PC yet, nearly 6 years later. Assholes.

Who knows the real reason, but piracy hardly applies to Madden since it's a multiplayer-centric game. I was also bummed to find out that the NFL 2K series doesn't exist anymore. Yeah, it's been that long since I've played a sports video game.

Magicka is great if you've got coop partners. Worth a buy at any price. Are you using only the plasma cutter in DS1? I didn't even know about the achievement and got it naturally anyway.

I wouldn't see the point in replaying this game, it was great no doubt about it but I'd rather put my time in something else I haven't yet played. I would really want another game like it though. Now that I have finished playing it I can go listen to the roundtable, finally.

Finally played through Spec Ops: The Line after buying it nearly a month ago. What a fantastic game. And at 7 bucks, the price was perfect for the length of the perfectly condensed campaign. I actually ended up disagreeing with Daniel's review--for a game that takes place exclusively in the desert, Spec Ops never left me feeling bored and pretty much had exciting environment after environment (as opposed to Serious Sam 3, which feels like one giant, generic desert level that never ends).

This is one of those games where everything comes together to create a fantastic, cohesive single-player experience. The mechanics serve the narrative serves the art serves the mechanics. I can't wait to see what Yager does next.

Also, a quote from Wikipedia that makes me love the dev team all the more:

'The multiplayer component of the game was created by a separate developer, and included "at the detriment of the overall project and the perception of the game," according to Cory Davis, lead designer at Yager:

"It sheds a negative light on all of the meaningful things we did in the single-player experience. The multiplayer game's tone is entirely different, the game mechanics were raped to make it happen, and it was a waste of money. No-one is playing it, and I don't even feel like it's part of the overall package - it's another game rammed onto the disk like a cancerous growth, threatening to destroy the best things about the experience that the team at Yager put their heart and souls into creating." '

That is an amazing find Sliverstorm. Thanks for sharing. In hindsight, I think the lighting and environments were more varied than I gave credit for. It's easily one of the more memorable games in the last year, which is saying something considering how no one could give a **** for the original Spec Ops games.

I really wish Yager had the resources that were dedicated to multiplayer. Wonder what they could have done with them....

Are you on hard? So long as you're methodical and not super-late-game, you should be able to drink up. I'm a total wuss when it comes to horror games I'm unfamiliar with so DS1 was terror-difficult for me.

I think I'm playing on Normal. Don't get me wrong, the first few hours were absolutely terrifying, probably more so because I was drinking, but I'm starting to feel like the game game's scares are all dependent on the same formula. Usually, it's a solid formula, but only for a few hours. After that I start to see the formula and start expecting certain things. My first hour should have/could have been completed in about 15 minutes, but I kept creeping down each corridor waiting for something to jump out at me in the darkness.

Still trying to platinum P4G (I'll need yet another playthrough, but my compendium is complete at last!). Also, I plan on picking up Ni No Kuni as soon as it's available.

So you've gone through twice now? I'm hoping I can mop up in just one more playthrough.

The difficulty tweaks you can do in the next playthroughs make a huge difference. I just finished the Heaven dungeon and I'm level 90 with no grinding whatsoever. That means so much more time for social links!

Yep. Since I refuse to see any guides, I missed my chance for a trophy this playthrough. It will not happen again, but I'll need a third one to get platinum.

Still Far Cry 3. The world is beautiful filled with stuff actually useful to collect. Vaas is great. The guns are just so much fun to shoot. I'm really getting good at taking down enemies stealthily (a sniper rifle is a great asset in this regard). It even has a platinum trophy structure similar to Assassin's Creed II in that it takes some time, but there is a minimum of multiplayer trophies (and none that sound like a pain to collect) and the single player trophies are doable in one playthrough.

I'm going to crown it as my Game of the Year, and I'm a really big Assassin's Creed fan.

"but there is a minimum of multiplayer..."

Meant to type "and" instead of "but."

I may replay Dead Space 2 to get ready for 3. Other than that Dishonored and possibly AC3 on the Vita.

About to finish up my DS2 playthrough. Still haven't gotten the finger cannon, but whatever, I just enjoy the ride. Forgot how much fun the zero-grav stuff is. I hope there's a lot more in DS3.

Agreed. I think Dead Space is the best survival horror series this generation. Unless I am forgetting one. I am psyched for three to come out.

i agree its the best total package in the survival horror genre this gen... i really enjoyed deadspace, and it did scare the **** out of me quite a few times... but... with that said... i loved alan wake and feel the story is the best in the genre and imo one of he best of this generation, up there with DA:O, ME TRILOGY, BIOSHOCK, RED DEAD:R, WALKING DEAD etc... i also think the criminally underrated CONDEMNED games deserve a menion as well...

Finally beat Borderlands 2 with my buddy on playthrough 2. It was tough in sections but fun. Now we just gotta clean up some sidequests on Sir Hammerlocks Big Game Hunt.

No idea what i am gonna play after that though.

Australia doesn't get the Fire Emblem demo :( but i did play the DMC demo and i'll probably be picking up a copy tomorrow. Also still working on getting 100% in AC3, I'm up to 86. Those optional objectives in main missions are going to be a *****

Borderlands 2 Sir Hammerlock Big Game Hunt. Some new bad guys but no character upgrades or higher level cap. Not much humor either unfortunately.
