What Are You Playing? October 20th, 2012

Posted on Saturday, October 20 @ 11:02:56 Eastern by

Rather than coming up with some flowery language about the games I'm playing this weekend, I need to focus on efficiency, directness, and churning out scores for the following titles:

007 Legends
Silent Hill: Book of Memories
Skylanders Giants (for PlayStation Lifestyle)
[Redacted]

Whoops, can't talk about that last one. If you're not playing anything this weekend, let us know what your plans are and maybe take a guess at what I can't talk about. As always, if you're gaming today and tomorrow and lurking GR right now, you must tell us...

What are you playing?

Personally it just made me dig out my Doom 3 CDs and reinstall the original because I forgot how much I enjoyed it. It's mindblowing how they can actually make both the graphics and gameplay worse and then sell it as an improvement.

C'mon though, don't you want RAGE 2? They've gotta fund that before they can start working on iD Tech 6. Doom 4 will be a Kickstarter campaign.

PS3. The PS3 version is great because you can finally play DOOM 1/2 on the PS3. DOOM 1/2 is already on XBL so a lot of people already have them, but it is not on PSN. So this is a great way to play DOOM on PS3.

Where's all this hate coming from for the BFG edition? I'm playing it right now and it runs beautifully. Obviously i've played other great HD upgrades (Metal Gear, Jak & Daxter) and I see no reason to think that doom is any worse than them. That said, if you want to see a truly atrocious HD upgrade, play the "upgraded" versions of Splinter Cell and Pandora Tomorrow. They are awful.

Great Doom mod which turns the game into a beat' em up in first person. It also has Max Payne style storytelling, cartoonish graphicstyle and loads of humor.

I've been playing XCOM religiously. I do have to emphasis that while this remake is true in spirit of the original, they are still both entirely different games and both stand on their own merits. The modern edition is way more focused and simplified, but the intensity, concern, and tension all remain and are even magnified in some ways. Also if you haven't already tried the demo for XCOM it's available on steam and the game's website.

TL;DR- XCOM was thoroughly worth my money, and i would recommend playing the demo to anyone.

I think i may be one of the few people that liked DA2. Other than the enviroments being recycled, i liked the more vocal main character (especially playing him as a sarcastic jerk), party member and storyline. I hope Dragon Age III fixes what people did not like though.

I'm still playing the Mechwarrior Online Beta. At present there are only four maps, eight mechs (though each chassis has four to five variants), and one game mode, but I've put more hours into it than I have full complete games. I'll probably end up buying one of the founders packages. I've already spent so much time with the game that I'm starting to almost feel guilty that it's been entirely free.

Resident Evil 6. Was very worried after reading the reviews but I have to say I'm loving it. It admittedly is the video game equivalent of a Michael Bay movie but it remains oddly compelling. Going to be a slight gaming drought for us PC gamers as other games are released first on the consoles this month. Re6 didn't even star pc development till after the console version was done.
Assassin's creed doesn't come out on PC until Nov 20th. It will however support dx11 and nvidias new Anti Aliasing Technique called TXAA. It gets rid of the temporal Aliasing that you see when you move.(The "jaggies on edges" that strobe or move when you or the camera moves). Far Cry 3 not until the 29. At least this gives me time to celebrate my birthday until then.

Bought Halo: Reach again in excitement for Halo 4. I don't know why i ever sold it in the first place. 343 had better be keeping the same set-up that Reach had, with the challenges and how the community was all kept together, the way the campaign, firefight and multiplayer all felt woven into one perfectly sealed package. Bungie did an incredible job with cramming content into Reach and making it feel complete, it would be heartbreaking if 343 ignored that and tried to do their own thing, Halo: Reach should be a starting point in something big for the next halo saga, like how COD have spent years expanding on their COD4 formula.

Good call, but my excitement went down a lot when I heard that Halo 4 will only have 8 campaign missions. 8! That is not acceptable. Well, nowadays it is, but not for me. I also listened to an interview with someone at 343 who said 'Halo 4's campaign is about the same length as previous Halo games so it's, you know.... a significant length'. (Not quoted, just how I remember it) He didn't sound confident at all when saying that. Halo 4 is short and he knows it's short. Really makes me question how much 343 actually care about Halo's story.

Well one of the only guys they kept from Bungie in the move to 343 was Frank O'Connor who was one of the guys in charge of story and universe. I hope for all the halo fanboys out there that the story and campaign stay true to what people love about it, but we'll see soon! Alex should be getting the game now any day.

Borderlands 2... Good god I'm hooked on that game... Going to start mining again... Hoping mattay's still online when I make it home... other than that just wasting time waiting for blops 2 and ac3... Incidentally the youngest son is playing the everliving hell out of Black 2... Praying to every god there is that he does not ever learn of Skylanders

Was gone for a week in the hills hunting so I played a bunch of Mario3D while out there. Almost have all the star coins haha. Still playing Dishonored as well.

Yup! and I get Elk meat anyway because there's no way she'll be able to eat it all so she'll be sending some to me once it's done.

Now it also looks like I'll be playing some BL2. A friend bought some godly expensive graphics card (dunno which one) and apparently it came with 6 free BL2 codes.

I just replayed through the first and second. Its always surprising just how the first is a masterpiece while the second had a very light story.

Bioshock 2 simply had no right to exist. It's basically crap Bioshock fanfiction.

Just beat Uncharted 3, moved to Rayman Origins. And as a side note, I finally have broadband and can play online! Thank you wireless broadband (because they will never run cable to my house)!

Back from off the grid, played a little Civ5 and GW2. Also picked up Mark of the Ninja and Crusader Kings 2 (nice sale).

It is what it is, graphics are OK, sound is... acceptable, physics are pretty good, and at the moment the online community (at least on psn) is at an all-time high! We virtual bike racers don't have many options (I'm looking at you CAPCOM, give me a passable MotoGP game DAMMIT!) so this was welcome, probably my favorite since MotoGP 08
