What Do You Want in the PS4?

Posted on Tuesday, October 11 @ 12:24:47 Eastern by

With news of a next-gen Xbox in the works, it won't be long until we begin hearing about its closest competitor, the PlayStation 4. Like yesterday, we're asking you what you'd like to see in a PlayStation 4. Y'know, like, if you guys were mad scientists working at Sony's super-secret research and development lab - what crazy stuff would you ask for? Yesterday we some some basic responses, like Blu-ray and backwards compatibility. Those are a given (and something we would want, too), but you gotta think future proof, people! That's what PlayStation is all about; these things gotta last a decade, at least!

What do you want to see in the PS4?

What I want to see, along with the new Xbox, is a release date that starts with 202x.

I agree. The WiiU probably won't be compelling competition for quite some time, as nintendo is wont to release extremely weak. I think it would be prudent for Sony to delay their release, spend more time developing, and getting more out of the system they have. I don't think the PS3 has peaked in any way and I think we would all benefit form an extended PS3 life over a brand new console just as the playstation hits its stride.

I want it to be launched at least in 2014, 2015 is preferable so they can really develop a good thing AND give me time to enjoy my newly-bought PS3.

4G Technology (But wireless as well!)
    Reliable, small design.
A more intuitive interface or a tutorial (XMB isn't THAT intuitive, e.g. where do they keep the game saves file? the DLC? What if you want to uninstall/erase them?)
Price no higher than $500 at launch.

What on Earth are you talking about? If you mean cellular wireless tech, then I fail to see how a next-gen playstation would be portable enough to take advantage of that. Also, as far as I know, latency is not very good in current implementations. Not to mention that they would need a carrier...

2015 please. Seriously though, no earlier than 2013.

Could we get better resource management and infrastructure?
I mean, the PS3 has this awesome CPU, yet it crashes when I'm using its crappy internet browser.
    Less unnecessary firmware updates.
    Upgradable RAM.

I always hop into the next-gen pretty late (depending on how well they support the current one), so what the next system has isn't all that big of a deal to me. I was happily married to my Xbox and PS2 well into 2008.

Gotta say, I disagree with the upgradable ram part. One of the major winning factors of consoles is that they're are complete units with relatively unchanging innards. Doing this, while in some ways restrictive, minimizes the costs for development houses, as they can optimize for the hardware that they have. They know what each user is going to have to play on, so compatibility issues are minimized.
It also takes the strain off the consumer, not having to worry if the game they buy will be playable. While I understand that some consoles have expanded their hardware (the N64 comes to mind) it only affected a few games, adding a fair cost for little reward in terms of overall usability. The last thing consoles need is even greater fragmentation, especially within a single brand.

Well, there wouldn't have to be huge quantities, but it would be nice for games like RAGE and BF3.

RAM upgrade every 3-4 years or so would be cool. I'm sure it wouldn't cost much.
It wouldn't be something as drastic as a new gaming computer or anything.

On the other hand though Mindless, the N64 did exactly this. The "Expansion Pack" that was required for many games was just that: A RAM upgrade. I didn't feel that this was a terrible thing at the time. The pack was actually included with the first game that required it, and purchasing it afterwards wasn't overly expensive. Perfect Dark comes to mind as a game requiring the Expansion Pack. Who knows, maybe Perfect Dark would only have been half the game without it?

Games to be 2K+ resolutions, or at least 1080p.
