What if the Original Deus Ex Were Made Today?
Posted on Tuesday, September 6 @ 15:27:51 Eastern by Daniel Bischoff
I can imagine Deus Ex has some pretty hardcore fans. If you grew up in the golden age of
gaming, before Steam, before Blizzard became a part of Activision, before...
Oh, gosh, I'm sorry, did you finish watching the video? I just broke your heart didn't I? Or... did you not preorder and get the broken heart finishing move?
This is why i hate DLC so very much. I shouldn't be penalized for wanting to maybe wait a week or two to pick up a game. I shouldn't need to pre-order it just to have content that was already put into the game that the dev's snaked out at the last minute for companies.
Speaking of that let me just say I hate game-stop with a passion. I call up over this weekend and ask. Can i still pre-order a PC copy of Space Marines because there DLC has two of the best space marine chapter skins available as DLC. Sure they say. I manage to get down there... (this is no easy feat for me because of my vision problem. I spent over a hour almost 2 on the crappy bus system where I live to get there) To only be told oh told oh im sorry we don't have any pre order PC copies left because we didn't order that many to begin with. I swear to god I hate that company Give me EB back dammit.
The only bright side of the trip was I consoled myself with a DQ blizzard on the bus trip home.
Gamings better now than it was before, you could go down to a store and have 75% of the games there be better than at least %50 of the games that came out in teh last 20 years.
With every advance in consumer technology, you get that little bit more satisfaction from what came before. It's nice to be able to go back to the games we used to enjoy and see how elements of what made them a success could or could not be translated into the games we play today using better technology. A lot of the time, a great game back then, is still a great game now - case in point deus ex. The new game is almost entirely a facelift.
What if the Original Deus Ex Were Made Today? Well, for every commenter here, let me point out a $20 indie game, which I consider the true successor to the original Deus Ex: And that game is E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy! This game uses the Source engine and pushes it for all it\'s worth. It has lots of text and little voice over, it is as old school as you can get with little hand-holding. The combat is amazingly meatier and definitely up there with HL2, but underneath, the 12 programmers have put a very deep RPG system! If I tell you you have more augmentations than in the original Deus Ex, that you have to research various metals, etc, you find in briefcases, that will give new armour when researched (how long it takes based on how many scientists you allocate! X-Com anyone?), etc, you can buy add-on\'s and weapons from dealers and you can use PSI abilities, like creating clones of yourself, or imploding an enemy! (all based on having the attributes to use them, like any good cRPG!
