Your Guide To Commenting On GameRevolution
Posted on Wednesday, August 28 @ 19:50:33 Eastern by Daniel Bischoff
Disqus went live. It's new and shiny. Here's how to use it.
1) Sort comments the way you want
The left-most drop down menu leading the comments on every post allows you to select the order in which you view comments. Don’t just let the highest rated comments dominate a post until the end of time. If you’re reacting to a topic you really care about, select “Newest” from this menu to see new comments as they’re added and respond accordingly. Looking for that obnoxious “FIRST” comment? Select “Oldest” from the drop down menu.
2) Find the hottest discussions on GameRevolution
The second tab on the Disqus menu leading every comments section allows you to view (not only the top commenters lead by yours truly), but also the most active, fiercest discussions across GameRevolution. If commenting on GameRevolution is your favorite part of the site, this is your shortcut to that juicy nougat center.
3) Rickroll everyone, all the time
Disqus not only tidies up our comments and allows you to view comments as they’re added. It also allows users to post links easily (without all the editing mess that previously came with adding a link to your comment). This means, yes, people will use that age-old tool of internet humiliation in the form of Rick Astley, but you can also link your fellow users to relevant Youtube videos and even other GameRevolution comments. (More on that in the next item.)
4) Find your comments
Feel like you’ve spun a bit of gold in a piping hot news article from GameRevolution and wanna make sure you can find it after the headline machine Alex Osborn pushes the article further down the home page? Just click on the time next to your (or any other user’s) name to get a direct link to the comment. Alternatively, hovering over “Share” and clicking the link icon will also give you this direct line to your comment.
5) Share gaming discussions with your friends
While we love you for sharing GameRevolution’s posts and articles with friends on Facebook and Twitter, we understand you might be a little narcissistic with your feeds. Hover over “Share” and select a service to broadcast your amazing comment out to friends and loved ones. They’ll hate you for spamming them about random gaming news, but at least now you can be as self-centered as you wanna be.
6) Edit your comments
This is something everyone has been asking for for a LONG time. You can now edit your comments after posting. Did you misspell something? Fix it, quick! Put your foot in your mouth? Act like it never even happened.
7) Quote other users
If you want to ensure you’re clear about who or what it is you’re replying to, you can put text inside a blockquote. Simply add the tag
before the text you want to quote, then at the end of that text, close the quote by typing
.
8) Follow your favorite users
Mouse-over or click on another user’s icon in Disqus and you have the option of following that user. Tracking your favorite users allows you to follow them from discussion to discussion, make friends, and maintain your dedicated upvoting of each other.
9) Comment notifications are now in Disqus
The mail icon in the top right corner of GR next to your username and settings will still notify you of private messages and forum thread replies, but to catch all replies to you throughout GameRevolution, simply check the “My Disqus” tab in any comment section.
10) Share images and more
You can easily link to images within your comment, but you can also embed images by uploading them to Disqus. Simply click on the image icon just below the comment box and then choose a file from your directory.
11) Don’t upload gifs though
Just post the URL in your comment and it should appear.
It should be noted that the commenting platform will evolve over time. Please be patient with any issues you might run into. Comment here with notes of your own and in the case of Disqus not appearing or loading properly, you can reach us in the GRandmasters forum.
