What do these ratings mean?

I signed up for GR just so I could mention how Mike Reilly is a complete idiot.  GR normally rips games apart and gives lower grades than just about any other review site; for the most part I like that, because a lot of games don't live up to all the hype, and it's nice to see what negative parts to the game there are before you buy it.

But a C+ for Yoshi's Island?  Are you kidding me?  I own the game and it's great, and I don't give out A grades to many games.  Sure, multi-player would of been nice, but that's about its only short-coming.  I love how you mention the 'puzzles' are lame, writing how obvious it is when you need to switch characters.  Didn't know that was a 'puzzle' Mike.  Yet the whole point of the game which makes it challenging is getting 100% completion on each level along with the coins.  Apparently, that's only for people with OCD according to you, so that doesn't come into play with your review.  Since you don't want to bother with that, the game turns out too easy, what a shock.  Sounds like you didn't bother much with this, or (more likely) couldn't do it.  Try and get all 30 stars, 20 coins, 5 flowers and 1 character coin for each of the 50 levels and tell me how easy it is.

This is clearly one of the best games for the DS.  You guys need to give credit where it's due and actually spend a little time playing the game before you trash talk it.  Looking forward to your C- review of Halo 3.  Unbelievable.

Switching between characters here is certainly not a proper puzzle, as we both mentioned, but it does have an element of it if when you're going for 100% since you have to mentally note where the stork sign is in relation to that invisible barrier-of-no-return so you can get everything to that point when you retry the level over again. It's a subtle one, barely worth the term 'puzzle' in gaming pseudo-linguistics, but it fits the English definition: "a toy, problem, or other contrivance designed to amuse by presenting difficulties to be solved by ingenuity or patient effort." Note: "patient effort" as is found in this game by retrying levels over and over. Note also: "ingenuity", which is not found in this game, hence the 'puzzle elements' feel obvious. This retry-based game loop is designed with only one thing in mind -- to stretch a game's hour length beyond its linear one with a few, well-placed cookies along a road of repetition.

Replaying every stage for 100%, or about 2-3 hours per world, for 20 minutes worth of mediocre extras felt like I was walking too long for too small a cookie. So what kind of a person would do this? In relation to me, someone with relative OCD. Second, let's use the english deifinition for "challenge": "a call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill, strength, etc". Yoshi's Island DS is not one of gamer skill, for the easiest parameter is not getting hit for the 30 stars. Its challenge is one of repetitive endurance -- how many loops around the same track you can endure without getting bored. I don't think good games are to be endured, they should intrigue. Anywho, thanks for your opinions and feedback. We're glad you're part of the site. Oh and we'll get as much baseless name-calling for giving Halo 3 a D+ as we would if we gave it a B+, so who cares.

I say give Halo 3 an A just to get the fanatics to shut the hell up. Then you can PM all the non-fanatics and tell them the real score! Dont get me wrong though I LOVE Halo... but HATE fanatics.

As far as time being spent Mike, it sounds like you spent most of yours looking up words in a dictionary. I would think an accomplished writer wouldn't need to do that much of that. I'll back off on Halo 3 though, it wasn't that great.
